I just bought a nice refurb 8GB/512GB Surface Pro 3 for £500 (takes the sting out of the impending Pro 5 announcement :-) )

Just general word/powerpoint/Excel and Internet.
Please note changing Internet browser to Opera makes a HUGE difference, it has a battery saver mode and the CPU usage is also dramatically reduced.

Can you pls confirm your SP usage during 5h. I might send mein back, as it is definitely around 3-3.5h . In fact i was on the market to buy an extra charger

No actually, I agree with you, the kickstand is annoying to balance on your lap and Microsoft would convince you that it's very usable (it's better with the multi-angle stand on the 3/4 than on the 1 and 2). I actually had a Surface Book but it was a total mess, it felt like a beta product so I sent it back and stuck with my SP3.

Yeah I guess I am just not the intended market

I really like the look of the surface book but what I have never understood is how the surface pro could possibly be comfortable to use on your lap?

It's not, unless you are using it without the keyboard. But then it's a compromise as the Surface Book is literally twice the price.

With sinking Pound Sterling, don't expect Microsoft to keep the same pricing when they announce the next Surface Pro.
Bought SP4 on Christmas. Using it as main machine at the moment (Visual Studio, Photoshop etc)
Pros: light, speedy, no overheating so far, really love the touch screen for editing stuff
Cons: Poor battery, last 3h max on light usage. Build Quality still lower than my 3y old macbook pro.
Not very comfortable for lap usage

An apple is incompatible with everything except other apples. My pear loves all of the fruits in the bowl.
(All gone now but worth checking every morning as they have some great stuff)

Mind sharing where you got that?

What do you realistically expect to gain from the pro 5 (in practical terms) that's worth a few £100 more? My pro 4 has easily handled everything I've thrown at it and I expect that to continue for quite a while yet.

£1,000 with the (necessary) keyboard?
COLD.

There will be a surface pro 5 announced shortly, it won't be available until May I'd guess at least...
It will cost a lot more... If you want one of these, this is a good spec and price point.
I'd guess an equivalent model will be at least 30% more once new ones are announced.

I'm a bit unsure whether to buy this or wait for the surface pro 5. What do people think?
Good price tho

It depends if you are going to have a sinking feeling when number 5 gets announced if that announcement is made in the next 3 months, it sounds like you will. Or you don't care and have enough money and not obsessed with it to spend it on things you want without guilt etc.

BTW Microsoft Compete is well worth having if you like to take your Surface out and about a lot! https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msuk/en_GB/pdp/Microsoft-Complete-for-Surface-Pro/productID.298424100/?vid=298424300
They will announce a Surface pro 5 this year though right?
Thanks
