I'm not sure that counts as a "similar one"

It's 3.5", it's not an external drive, and it's £183.07!

Of course it is. I paid £50 for a WD 2TB external. I took part in beta testing the 4.50 update. The 2TB external has come in very useful in the past few weeks. Before this update I had 1TB in my Pro and only had like 200GB left. £100 for 4TB for an external drive is very good.

Not an expert, but that looks like faults on the hard drive to me (especially the "I/O device error" lines). Have you run the SeaTools long test on the drive? That should test every sector and should indentify any dodgy ones. Personally, I would be thinking about returning the drive...
Strawdog
12 Apr 17 #153
TestDisk is primarily intended for file recovery/partition repair rather than physical testing despite the software's name.

I/O errors can indicate physical faults but they could also be due to entries within the allocation table (the directory of the locations of the files on the disk) that are pointing to data that is no longer present.

It appears it's a second hand drive as it's finding bits of files and/or references to them still on the drive.
mickael28
12 Apr 17 #152
That's what I was thinking as well... although it was strange as it seems Drive Manager just recognizes this drive and not others, so in theory, I thought it should be more reliable with the results.

After running that TestDisk programme though, I got around 3000 lines of errors, so I'm with my doubt again about trying to return it or not.

But at the moment I don't feel too comfortable putting 4TB of data in this drive, so most likely is that I'll try to arrange a refund this time and just avoid BT shop in the future for fragile things...

Mah first one - I couldn't be bothered to return, mine was delivered to an office so no dropping through the door post hole, but still badly packaged and likely have suffered rough handling. Testing with SeaTools it passed though so I decided not to return.Could be that the Drive Manager program is just ****.

Hey Strawdog, never used that TestDisk tool before, but I run it on the drive and it's got a log with around 3000 lines with the following messages. Do you know if that means it's definitely faulty? I think so, but wanted to ask you in case it sounds familiar...

My original drive was delivered to my work and I'm not in this week so unsure if a replacement has been sent out yet or not (not had any emails to say one's been sent out).

I'll not be best pleased it they send a tatty refurb, I'll be running TestDisk/PhotoRec (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) on it, to see how clean it is, if it's not new.

Guys, did you run the complete Diagnostics with the tool that's provided in the drive?
If you have run it, could you please let me know what were your results? or if you have not run it, could someone pls run it and let me know if it success or fails for you?

I thought the replacement HDD was fine because windows recognised it, but when I run those complete diagnostics I get an error again?!

Good luck trying to talk to BT then.

I reported mine faulty over 2 weeks ago now and I'm still waiting for a replacement, maybe next week I think. I had not seen a customer service so bad in a longgg time!!! It seems they just opened an online shop yesterday and are still learning by the way they do things...

Mine was happy away for a couple of weeks but has just died on me whilst copying some files to it, it's now making nice grindy disk noises and emitting an occasional beep when the actuator arm resets.
mickael28
22 Mar 17 #139
Sorry, to what were you referring to?
My drive was making a strange mechanical noise the 1st time I plugged it in, and then all other tools I use to check temperature, SMART errors, etc... none of them recognize the drive, so there's definitely something wrong with it.

I do agree, that I doubt BT will pack anything differently, but knowing it. We have a few ideas to mitigate the risks of the delivery in our house. Although we cannot control what happens on its way here.

We will see, as BT has not even replied yet...

That's rudicilous, although something is making me feel like your replacement drive will suffer the same fate of the postage system. I ordered mine to my work address so it was handed to me, but still I'm paranoid about these things. It seems like it's not just my Drive Manager software that's showing full scan error though - but the drive works fine for me otherwise and I recently did an extended SeaTools test which it passed.
anuruddha
22 Mar 17 #137
actually they did **** packaging but fortunately I got it to my hand rather dropped down to letter box. I don't know how did they handle it until it come here. Amazon packaging is the best. cheers :man:

I choose 'goods arrived damaged' and I'll see what they prefer to do. TBH, I'll be happy either way (replacement for a new one, better for me; or refund, a little bit annoying... but I guess it's just bad luck). I would not like to keep a faulty item anyway.

I hate returning stuff as well, but thankfully, it doesn't happen often. But again, sellers tend to pack their products with more care. BT seems that didn't care at all to me...
AznAssassin
22 Mar 17 #135
I might do the same, what was the reason you chose for returning?
"faulty on arrival" or was it something like "didn't like the product"? (I'm aiming for a refund with less/no hassle)

gosh I hate returning stuff...
mickael28
22 Mar 17 #134
Personally, I'm going to try and return it. The other software the I've got doesn't even recognize the drive...

And 4TB of data is quite a lot of data in case it starts failing soon. If BT sends a replacement fine, but if they give me a refund instead... I'll feel more comfortable anyway. Another one will come at some point.

I told them by email that the packing was really poor and not even putting a fragile sticker was maybe even worse. Hopefully they'll improve for future customers!

Good luck.
AznAssassin
22 Mar 17 #133

K0smopolitan, I did as you said.
btw, I bought 2 drives (one had cracked casing, other is fine), also dropped through letter box.
BOTH failed the 'complete' testing from Drive Manager. typical..
H2testw seems to take forever to test.
Not sure if Seagate software itself is unreliable..(mind you, I've never trusted manufacturer softwares).

Is it better to return this?
I read through the returns a bit, BT shop does let us RMA the product.

though, I'd like to hear from you guys first.
reply ASAP.

Thanks
mickael28
21 Mar 17 #132
Similar issue about the postage not being any secure (not enough wrapping, no fragile sticker, etc), so that our postman delivered it by putting it through the letter plates in the door and dropping it about 1.5m.

Passing the Drive Manager software give a total failure, after some mechanical noises and a lot of HDD programmes not recognising the drive.

Great, let's see now how BT customer service is...

Do a full scan with the Drive Manager, that came bundled with the hard drive. Same situation about postage. I did a full scan with Drive Manager twice, overnight, and both times after about 8 hours of scanning it told me the drive didn't pass, and that I should contact seagate about warranty. h2testw successfully filled the drive and verified data though, but I'm still not liking it and thinking about returning it.

Mine has arrived (on 15th march).

The packaging was broken-ish (HDD packaging, a tear in the plastic casing. not the mail packaging). Guess the handling was bad..

should I be worried about the drive failing soon?
used HD tune and no errors/bad sectors found. are there any other tools to use to check?

They could have done better with packaging tbh...was just the HDD stock package and a thin mail package bag.

Tests have shown improved performance when using an external drive on an Xbox one, so it does sound like an issue with your older drive.
I've got a few different external drives and tested them all with diskmark... The best performing one got used for my Xbox one and the slowest for backups.
Tried using an SSD in an external caddy on the Xbox one for a while too and that massively improved things (AC Syndicate's loading times were driving me potty)

Copying/moving files from one Drive to another Drive WON'T knacker your good one in anyway.

It's a Hardware issue your old one has, NIT a Software one ...

Hardware issues are to technically (both figuratively and literally) a little bit more difficult to rectify?!.

Software or later ones (in comparison) are nothing!, lol.

Any issues your new Drive may have with receiving the 'data' from your old Drive will most likely be a 'cosmetic' one (eg. mainly Software related).

Of which (if push comes to shove), a simple formatting of your new Drive would/should more than sufficiently rectify such problems in itself .....

the drive that is starting to fail is actually WD My passport which i have been using on mac (could be why it started messing up but then again i had it for 7 years). i had data on so didnt want to reformat for mac. as of right now i can access the data but it takes like half an hour to mount and then some extra time for the data to actually appear PER folder.

in this case would moving my data to new drive or will it mess up the new drive too?

That's a 3TB drive, not a 4TB...
I've got one of the older Samsung branded 2TB versions of these drives and it's still going strong after being carted all over the place. I've had two failed Western Digital drives over the years, one Samsung and one Seagate so while some people might warn you against X, Y or Z brand, you need to be aware that ALL hard drives can potentially fail.

I'd go with this, just as long as you're not using it for your only copy of irreplaceable data.

Yep. had a few failed seagates bought brand new and failed either within 1 year or just over the year. Annoying and frustrating. Even a 10 year warranty wouldn't do it for me.

Never had a problem with WD and i've had old old drives which just don't seem to fail.

Saying that, i've got a couple external drives which appear to look identical to this maxter one externally, but internally the ones i've got are samsung drives, both holding out pretty well.

It's a feature a lot of people have asked requested for quite some time Little to no notice was given that it was going to go live. Literally no idea what you're going on about now.

I have prime, and the disk you claim is £99.99 is actually £183.07. There is no discount.
There is no cage provided with it, so it's not an external drive.
Even if you did have an enclosure for it, it would use more electricity than the Maxtor.
You'd also need to use up another mains power socket to power it.
And it's 3.5" instead of 2.5". It's a lot bigger and a lot heavier!

This Maxtor is a good deal for an external, £100-ish, portable drive (none of which that other disk is).

For the pro If the drive is 15mm you can literally hammer it in. But it will make the case buldge a bit.

Wouldnt risk the extra heat or jamming a drive in there when you can connect a usb.

For the old phat ps4 it was easier to jam one in, not sure about the slim

Can you crack one of these open and install inside a PS4?
paul_merton to NATHANDRAKEUNCHARTED
10 Mar 17 1 #34
I doubt this one would be thin enough to fit in the drive bay. Even many 2TB disks are too thick.
Spectral to NATHANDRAKEUNCHARTED
10 Mar 17 1 #39
It wouldn't be worth it anyway. With yesterdays 4.50 update PS4 can now use USB drives to install too so it wouldn't be worth voiding the warranty on the drive just to have it inside the PS4.
paul_merton
10 Mar 17 9 #38
I'm not sure that counts as a "similar one"

It's 3.5", it's not an external drive, and it's £183.07!

dont think this is a deal 2.5" used to be on sale in Sainsbury for £99. yes its too big for ps4, havnt checked inside ps4 pro

GREAT PRICE! great drive, use it for my travels

Amazon do a similar one for £99.99.

That said, the quality of the current one seems superior and for that reason I am giving off plenty of heat...

I never noticed yesterday that this is a portable drive as it doesn't say in the header. 4tb for £100 for a 3.5" isn't particularly exciting but portable is reasonable. although the 3tb WD refurb I missed at £56 is a much better bang for the buck

Are these the type of things you can plug in the back of a Samsung TV? for recording?

Smart tv suggests I can record stuff?
jrandrews72 to dodgymix
10 Mar 17 #28
Potentially YES, Depends on your TV. Check here. http://www.samsung.com/au/support/skp/faq/1077883

thanks op, has anyone not received the 4.50 update yet? I am still waiting
dfunked to rumuk
10 Mar 17 1 #21
Didn't download in rest mode yesterday, but as soon as I got in from work and woke it it started downloading... I'd say just try restarting the console if you use rest mode a lot.
The firmware updates are available to everybody at the same time, there's no staggering of release.

Failing that you can just download it on a PC and put it on a USB stick and update from there
jrandrews72 to rumuk

Thanks, I got my 4.50 update last night.

as reliable as a Seagate since they make them...

Are these reliable?

Exactly, its a bargain and if you want extra space its a no brainier, nothing to do with the price of what you are buying it for.

10 Mar 17 #17
Perfect for my PS4... Put an old 240GB SSD in it as a boot drive/drive for the small amount of games that benefit from SSDs last night. Everything else can go on the external, and this should easily last the lifespan of the console without needing to delete stuff.

Will any external hard drive work on the PS4 Slim with update 4.5?
nige182 to pieman790
10 Mar 17 2 #16
It must be USB 3.0, and the PS4 supports up to 8TB. Those are the only limitations I have read.

Edit: Oh and only one external drive can be used at a time.

10 Mar 17 1 #14
Thanks OP; bought one as soon as I saw this last night. I travel a lot for work and have a PS4 Slim coming today so this was perfect timing. Recently had a WD My Book fail so don't think one can ever be certain who is better. Would take this over a refurb any day.
AznAssassin
10 Mar 17 #13
I remember it was seagate drives that had a 'period' of high failure rate drives. I think it was the 3TBs?
Since Seagate bought Maxtor, are the drives the same? what about the failure rate on these? still luck of the draw?

Never owned a maxtor drive, so asking before I buy xD

Thanks

Not sure it's worth using with the PS4 considering it's over half the price of the actual console. Good for general storage though.

9 Mar 17 8 #5
Of course it is. I paid £50 for a WD 2TB external. I took part in beta testing the 4.50 update. The 2TB external has come in very useful in the past few weeks. Before this update I had 1TB in my Pro and only had like 200GB left. £100 for 4TB for an external drive is very good.

Depends if you plan on buying alot of games and keeping them for the next 5 years or more, for me it's well worth it mate

heat op... very convenient find for me you legend  I payed 100 for a 4tb seagate portable hard drive for my xb1 about 6 months ago and have not seen another 4tb for around 100 since... so this 4tb maxtor for my ps4 will stop me from needing to delete games/recordings constantly to make room for a new beta/demo/game every couple of weeks (it's so frustrating)

thanks very much :sunglasses:
prynolfc
9 Mar 17 1 #6
i agree, payed 100 for a 4tb seagate ror my xb1 and now 100 for this maxtor for my ps4, very rare that you see a 4tb external hard drive for less than 115-120 quid
