It's usually safe to ignore "best before" dates by a large margin. "Use by" dates are the ones you mess with at your peril.
(Some Belgian brewers, on being told they had to put a best before date on their labels, shrugged and put one 20 years into the future. I can confirm that Boon Old Kriek is still excellent after 10!)
