Use code FREEINK for another month of free instant ink comment #8

You can use FREEINK code to get another month free on the Instant Ink trial. Also if you ask (don't ask on threads or you'll be in trouble  ) someone thats already a subscriber (or google) you can get a referral code from them that will give you another extra month. So 5 months in total possible (or even 6 if comment 5 is accurate). I did it recently on two printers.
To add the codes download the 123setup (its part of the setup instructions). Then after you put in your billing details the next page has a box in the bottom left for promo codes. Add FREEINK there, then also add any referral code. If you forget you can call them later and ask them to add them, but easier if you don't forget

Can this be bought then after the free ink trial expires just cancel the HP ink being supplied and then just buy the cartridges myself as and when i require them? I don't want to have a monthly subscription with HP as i only print stuff now and again.
If its not possible to ditch the subscription whats the best printer around this price where i can buy my own ink?

With that sort of usage I suggest you check some reviews. Generally the issue with inkjet printers is they go through a cleaning cycle when not used for a while (which uses ink). Some can waste a considerable amount of ink, so its worth checking reviews. Even the ones that don't waste much ink will still result in a significantly higher cost/page.
You may want to consider a laser and quite possibly black and white printer at that (presuming you can do without colour). Even then you're more likely to face issues with sporadic usage. Best to buy something cheap/simple/with cheap toner/ink.

I'm guessing he realises this isn't a lab quality photo printer. The photo's will be ok, but for lab quality you need printers aimed at photo printing. They tend to have 6 inks rather then just Black + RGB. They can be reasonably economical for photo printing, especially the ones with refillable reservoirs, but the upfront investment is usually much higher then this deal.
If he's ok with standard inkjet photo quality he may want to consider this:
It's bigger and more expensive upfront (£74 after cashback). But comes with £74 instant ink credit plus 3 months free trial, plus one month with referral code (google or pm someone for a code) and one further month with FREEINK code. Given his usage he could select the £1.99 50 pages/month plan after the trial months which would give:
5 trial months 300 pages/month - with codes and included 3 months
37 months 50 pages/month - £74/£1.99
Thats a total of 42 month worry free printing for £74 (you can redeem free 3 year warranty). I doubt he'll come out much better off if he bought a printer and paid for ink (due to the aforementioned issues with low/sporadic usage).
If thats too big/much, keep an eye out as there have been others with 1 year trial on here.

Its for my Dad, he likes to print A4 photos thats he takes with his DSLR (less than 10 per week) so a Laser would be no good. He also prints the odd page of text a week so nothing major. I reckon this in kind of thing in the OP would be ok. But due to him not printing loads i didn't want him to have a subscription he was tied to that he would never use

Bought the 4527 at (in place of the 4523) at Argos, last Friday. Went on to the HP website today trying to work out how to scan something without it going to PDF or JPEG [NIGHT! MARE!] and happened to notice that my warranty was due to run out in January. I had to send a photo of my receipt in order to get it changed to a year from the date I bought it. As for a two year guarantee, advertised on the Argos website for this model, I was told to query it with Argos. Anyone who bought this might wanna check the warranty expiry date on their account.

As part of the printer setup it should ask you to download the setup app from 123.hp.com/setup.
During that process it should add the trial. Also it's during that process u add the FREEINK and referral code (just after billing details).
If it doesn't give you the free trial, give them a call. They will just ask for a picture of the box/leaflet then add the free months manually.

I noticed that it has one 'colour' cartridge which is a big no-no as you have to replace the whole thing if you run out of a particular colour. Also, the fake cartridges are the same price as the official ones, £8 for a black and £12 for a colour after this instant ink thing runs out.
Mentos to montblanc
15 Mar 17#38
I think for most, these are only worthwhile if you plan to use the trial period then ditch the printer and get another.
Having looked at reviews of the 8715 I bought, the cleaning cycle is apparently very wasteful. So even though that has individual cartridges and the cost per page may seem reasonable, in reality it will cost you a lot more after the Instant Ink sub ends.
We've tried so many printers over the years, inkjet/mono lasers/colour laser/etc. Done some research on cost per page, other consumables/etc. It never works out anywhere close in real world use. If you're banging out lots of pages then those figures may be useful. But when you do sporadic printing it upsets the apple cart. On inkjets you get cleaning cycles eating up the ink. On lasers you end up with issues with other consumable parts etc. When the printer dies you end up with ink leftover.
I now judge these deals by how much we've spent in the past on equivalent printers plus the consumables over the same period. I.E we end up buying a 2k/page toner/cartridge once a year, but I know we don't actually print that many pages. So if I can grab an Instant Ink included printer which covers me for the same period for a similar cost, I consider the printer disposable at the end.
Mentos
15 Mar 17#36
Well no you didn't mention these specific circumstances.
For £29.99 you get 3 months free instant ink (possibly 4 - see comment 5), plus 1 more with FREEINK code and 1 more with referral code (easily obtainable by asking someone by PM or a quick google). That equates to 1500-1800 pages (@300 pages/month) of printing included. I make that a cost per page of 1.7p or 2p.
If you will use all those pages then that is very competitive. Even if you won't use them all but will do a large proportion of colour pages it quickly becomes very good value.
At the end of the trial, ditch the printer and get another or go back to your old printer. Or if you're doing predominantly full colour pages then it may even be worthwhile subscribing.
So there are some circumstances and aspects of this deal that you clearly didn't mention or consider.

For anyone wondering, you can use your initial ink then use HP instant ink later. I did this and I just called them up. First thing the guy on the phone said in reply was that "sadly when you installed your printer you didn't accept the free trial means it isn't available anymore, but I can give you the 5 month free trial right now" was baffled but still got it. Bought the printer 5 months ago and got my first instant ink cartridges today.

Ordered & picked one up through Fast-Track. Got a 4527 instead of 4523. It came with 4 months free ink offer. Quick Google search reveals that there is no technical difference between 4523 & 4527, possibly the only difference is the extra free month of ink.

If you're printer is eligible you're better off signing up for the trial with that. You should get 3 months free and possibly be able to use the FREEINK code and referral code from existing customer. Thats upto 5 months free printing (@300 pages/month) for nothing. Why pay for the printer.
WRT the extra £5 for the other printer being worth it, it depends how much you'll be printing. The trial months are 300 pages. They charge £1.99 for 50 pages a month as the minimum plan. If you won't be printing more then 50 pages/month then you'll be £1 better of going with this deal and switching to the 50 page plan at the end. However, for a quid perhaps you may as well go for the other one and get two more months @ 300 pages so its worry free.
Also if you're not printing much its debatable how much the instant ink is worth to you anyway. In our case we went for the 8715 deal, which also gave £74 credit (i.e. 3 months free, 1 month with code, plus 1 month with referral, plus £74 account credit). We'll use the free months then switch to the 50 page plan, upgrading when needed and then back down again. We'll likely get close to 3 years of printing based on what we print (and theres 3 year warranty with the printer).
The 8715 was £124.99, you can claim £25 cashback and as its for business we get the VAT back. Effectively £83 all in. Over 3 years we're likely to spend more then that on INK. If you count up the pages with instant ink and compare cost per page that may not seem right. But with sporadic printing you find you lose ink for cleaning cycles. Full colour pages take a big chunk of ink. And invariably you end up with odd leftover cartridges when you come to change printer. So really we're getting a very good printer for less then nothing.

You may be right, but I'm pretty sure that if I signed up for instant ink for my old HP Desk jet I'd get a couple of months free. It depends on how much ink one goes through, but on reflection I think you are right and the £34.97 deal is the better one. Perhaps you should post it?
