In terms of brand I'd recommend Xiaomi, excellent design and build quality, the software is pretty glitch free and has many useful features without the users needing to be too geeky.

In terms of aliexpress, I've used them a couple of times and I'd use them again. It's worth understanding that aliexpress are not the retailer, they are a marketplace to connect retailers and consumers, a bit like eBay. When I bought my Xiaomi mi max I used the aliexpress app, using the free delivery option, I found the tracking info excellent, although you lose sight of tracking after it arrives in the U.K. as it's the Royal Mail 'signed for' service which doesn't offer tracking until it's delivered.
You can choose not to buy the U.K. warranty, by changing your location to US and just order as normal. After you order, aliexpress give the retailer a number of days to dispatch the order or the order is automatically cancelled and your money refunded, you do have an option to extend this period, my retailer had 5 days to dispatch my phone, they dispatched after 3 or 4 days.
With aliexpress, the retailer doesn't get your money till your order is received and you've confirmed your happy with your order - again via their app.

My phone arrived 21 days after ordering, 3 days to dispatch, 4 days for the Royal Mail to deliver in the U.K. so approx 14 days to get clear customs at both ends and air freight to the U.K. and this was just before Christmas.

Phones with the global rom from aliexpress will come factory sealed, unlike some retailers who install their own versions of the software.

That's how it should work, you'll always find folk with horror stories about all Chinese retailers, but I think the aliexpress model is about as good as you'll get when buying from the Far East.

P.s there shouldn't be any flashing required and it should get updates over wifi as normal, my mi max has had a couple of updates. Quidco was also available for aliexpress but I wouldn't bank on it being paid, I think mine is still pending.

No, change your location to US as the warranty charge is UK specific, then order as normal - seriously of you do have vision problems I'd look at the xiaomi mi max, that's what I have as my eyesight isn't the best.

So you probably get a better camera in this but wouldn't the Note 3 Pro be better with the SD650?

Apparently the 625 is more efficient. I have the RN3 special addition and not looking to upgrade but this looks a great price now with band 20. Some say build is better on this also.

this doesn't perform as quick, but as said it had better efficiency.

either is a great purchase.

i would probably recommend this only for the fact you'll likely get longer official ROM support

It should have at least ~20% better battery life despite the battery being less than 2% bigger.

Says it is "based" on Android 6; how easy/likely is this to be updated to future versions? Is it "normal" or needing any tweaking with the global ROM?

Looking at a cheap stop-gap phone, and it is this, or the Lenovo P2...if this is actual Android without any issues, it's a steal...
doncoop to lovelybeer
28 Mar 17 1 #12
yes it's android.

but it has miui on top. like a heavy Samsung touchwiz. lots of apps and customisations done by them.

some are good, battery savers, security settings. others aren't too people's tastes like the launcher.

it's android regardless though. you'll likely get android 7. the Redmi phones tend to get at least one big os upgrade. plus you get some security updates.

It is a pain in the butt to unlock bootloader. My first Xiaomi went throgh fine after receiving SMS authorization. On my second Redmi Note4 though, it is giving me famous well known "Could Not Verify" error no matter what I do. Anyone come across it ? Already sent email to Xiaomi and followed some tips and tricks I found online. Still not helping the issue.

28 Mar 17 2 #29
its not bloat in traditional sense of apps you can't delete. it's all baked in to miui overlay.

i personally don't think you really need to remove any of it. what i would say is, as this has more baked in, you should get the 3gb version over 2gb. it needs it.

if you really don't like miui i suspect, being a Snapdragon CPU, there will be custom ROMs taking it to more vanilla. XDA is the best bet on that.

with miui that would involve unlocking the bootloader and then flashing, so bit of a pain. again, research XDA forum for the phone and see what people are doing and how to compare against your expertise

Personally I'll never get a phone that doesn't have NFC so I'm just playing devils advocate.

I've read people saying they get 8 Hours screen on time on the RN3. Personally I'd prefer the much snappy performance of the SD650 which is pretty efficient anyway.

Hi,
I'm looking to get this for my daughter, I have quite a limited budget and don't really have much in the way of criteria. Just wanted something that was quite sleek, relatively fast and didn't require any flashing/technological knowhow to get up and running/future maintenance. I've read through the thread and I was wondering if anyone could kindly offer me some advice please.
Would this one be the best to get around this price range? I know its a little bit of a gamble in regards to customs, but worse case how much would this be? Am I correct in assuming the global version, isn't malware ridden or would it still require flashing etc? In the case of a dispute with Ali express, I realise it could be a while before getting my money returned, but would it be returned? Any better alternatives anyone could recommend as opposed to Ali express?
Sorry for bombarding with questions, but having had a look around with my limited knowhow, this one seems most probable.
Thanks

Male sure it has the Global Rom. This way you are much less likely to have malware, which is usually only in dodgy, vendor installed roms. Also, Google play etc, will be pre installed. Ask the seller if they can provide the box factory sealed. Choose free delivery. This way you are much less likely to be charged customs, as the seller usually declares a low value.

Best bet would be to search redmi on here as there's loads of previous threads where you'll get more information on. Hope this helps.

Xiaomi are usually very competitive on price and performance, would presumably be shipped with global ROM, as for malware Xiaomi are a good company that doesn't install malware, some of the resellers may install custom ROMS but that is when they are only made for Chinese market only which means no playstore. So this phone is global version and will be ready to go out of the box with playstore.

To delete change your location to US and order as normal. Up to you if you want the warranty, in theory it should mean that you don't need to return the phone to China for warranty repairs, but I didn't bother.

Thanks for the advice, I'll make sure to do that.

They certainly seem very impressive and value for money. You've sort of sold it to me already. Thanks!

Thanks for all the detailed advice. I really appreciate it.

A few more, sorry. Forgot to ask in terms of the warranty, its quite a small price difference so why are so many people opting out of it? Is it not valid in the UK? Are you still required to return it to China? I can see they make reference to an American shipping centre in the link, but I assume international insured shipping makes it more expensive than its worth.
Final point, by selecting the US option, does that mean you get their 2 pin plug by default?
Infiltrator
28 Mar 17 #44
@ lolrita- the warranty charge is uk specific and in theory it should be a good idea - I opted out as the phone I bought had very few reported issues and I was keeping the cost to a minimum. If the phone needs to be returned to China for a warranty repair it'll go in the bin and I won't touch another Xiaomi product again.

I'm looking for a replacement for my SU6 as it developed the phantom back button last week after only 14 months use. Absolute nightmare and a shame as I really liked the phone.

Amazon were excellent and provided a full refund. I'm thinking of staying with Amazon because of their excellent service and going for the Motorola Moto G4 at £139 as the specs seem very similar to the SU6.

How does the Xiaomi compare to the Moto?

A word of caution. Ordered from same store on the 1st Feb still waiting for the delivery. Order was dispatched within 2 days reached uk within 10 days picked and lost by Royal mail. Will apply for a refund within a week. TBH can't fault Xiaomi store or AliExpress but as royal mail is not properly tracked so prone to get lost within the UK. In that scenario u ll have to wait for over 2 months to even apply for a refund. Otherwise good store decent mobile phones good value for money.

Not for this one. The Helios X20 in the MTK Redmi Note 4 is far faster than the SD625 version. For the Redmi Note 3 the snapdragon 650was the better version as it was more powerful and power-efficient, but for the RMN4 the SD625 is slower than both the SD650 and the Helios X20 while not offering as good battery life
acholmes2000
28 Mar 17 2 #52
Battery life is much better with sd625 and speed difference in day to day use is barely noticeable, I'd trust user reviews far more than I'd trust antutu for real world performance.

I'd bet the gaming performance of 650 beats this but for someone not interested in games this is the far better option.

Often "Asian" version is more advanced than global. Look through samsung motorola and htc phones, nearly every one for Asia is dual sim. There is 4gb x27 RM Note 4 released in China. Nearly twice the speed in benchmarks than global RM Note 4.

The other player from East is UMI Z Pro. I know is 2x price but you will get a lot more. Qualcomm and Mediatek have delay in newest SoC. So if someone can wait there should be bunch of new phones coming out with new chipsets. That don't necessary means to buy them but older models will drop in price. By the way RedMi Note 5 is due in short time:)

My first foray into Chinese phones was an Umi Zero; it arrived with the GPS broken, so I returned it. SIX MONTHS LATER the replacement arrived - and the SIM tray ejector broke 5 minutes out of the box.

In contrast - having given up on the Umi replacement ever appearing, I ordered the original Xiaomi Note; it has worked flawlessly, and it still going today as a games/entertainment device for my daughter (who broke the tablet she was using).
Not only is it still going strong, but Xiaomi still issue OS updates for it - it is now running the latest version of MIUI 8.

Having lost my Note 3SE, I ordered a replacement only a couple of weeks ago, so I am gutted to find that Xiaomi have finally launched the Note 4SE; this is probably their worst feature, the lack of advertising for new models.

For those asking about the warranty.
It would appear they want you to send the phone back to China even though they claim they will replace it in 10 days. Again reading through they may just give you an aliexpress credit within 10 days, meaning you will still have to wait for delivery after they credit you.

One word of warning; although this seller says the phone has Band 20 support - and Xiaomi have a history of releasing new versions with new features without announcement - I still cannot find ANYTHING on an official Mi website or forum detailing the addition of band 20 to the Note4.
For the Note 3, the band 20 version was given an "SE" tag, but there is no such version of the Note 4; YES, there is a new version of the 4 based on the Snapdragon chipset, but this on its own does not mean band 20 support. The Note 3 has two similar chipset versions, but the Band 20 model is an addition to the Snapdragon model (and slightly different size).

GSMArena DONT list Band 20 for either version of the Note 4 - although they have been known to make mistakes sometimes, as they usually get pre-production copies of the phones they review.

And once again, "Global ROM" does not equal Band20 support, it means the phone isnt meant for the internal Chinese market, and has a different pre installed set of apps (and less government spyware).
dreadzone101 to Gentle_Giant
29 Mar 17 2 #95
I don't see why you're under the idea that a B20 version must have a unique name considering RN3 is the only phone to have got a "Special Edition" name. All the other Band 20 Xiaomi phones are just "Global Version" released in different markets and share the same name as their Chinese non B20 counterpart.

We discussed the Redmi 4A before and you wouldn't accept it had Band 20 despite what you have said about Xiaomi's lack of advertising. At the time we were discussing it, GSMArena did not show it having Band 20 but it was later updated. It was likely the Indonesian version. Official Indonesia MI site specs: http://www.mi.com/id/redmi4a/specs/ showing it has B20 and does not have a unique name. Another example: the Taiwan Redmi Note 4X. http://www.mi.com/tw/redminote4x/specs/ has B20, and is not called "Special Edition" like their RN3 was. The phone in this deal is either Indonesian market like the Redmi 4A or a B20 version of the Indian RN4. Unboxing videos
for Indonesia show the same box as pictured in the AE listing. A well established Tech reviewer unboxed this "Global Version" model stating the B20 support and that it might be Indian.

As for the Global ROM statement, this listing says "Global Version". It's even on the side of the box, which Xiaomi themselves have labelled and not the seller. I will say the same thing when we discussed the 4A, "Global" has multiple meanings and might mean a Chinese market version flashed with Global ROM only, but not in this case. The Redmi 4A, Mi Note 2, Redmi 3S "Global Version" have B20 as does this.

When you say dealer, presumably you mean marketplace? as opposed to retailer like gearbest and geekbuying, etc.

Aliexpress give the impression that they have an official Xiaomi store, but my understanding is that it's just a shopfront that Aliexpress have created to group all the sellers of the Xiaomi devices. That said, all the sellers show the number of orders and feedback, so you can generally easily spot the reliable sellers - and in my experience the Aliexpress model works quite well.

I have a xaomi fakebit and that works very very well. However, I have had two chinese phones to date - the ulephone power which lasted less than 6 months - parts of the screen stopped working and a umi which died within a month, just switched itself off never to switch on again. Of course you can return them back to China at your expense, along with all your data and passwords on the phone. Personally I wouldnt trust my phone would get there and wouldnt trust my data was not taken along the way. Chinese phones at this price are hit or miss, but its the aftrecare that is the real issue. The money I have wasted on my two Chinese phones could have been used on a second hand branded phone - be about the same spec and better build quality. Just a word of caution to anyone thinking of dabbling with Chinese phones - yes they work - maybe they will work for a while, but if they go wrong - that's money down the drain. Gearbest, who I got my phones from offred me compensation for both but this was only about 25% of the price I paid so all in I lost about £140 on tthe two. My advice would be to save up and either buy a second hand phone with a warranty or save up even more and get a new phone.

My phone arrived this morning just 11 days after I ordered it from the Xiaomi HK store, although it seems to have been sent from Singapore. Nothing extra to pay on delivery. The phone was well packaged and sealed with 2 red 'Global Version' stickers beneath the sealed cellophane. Unfortunately, the glass screen protector I ordered in the bundle was missing. The position of the cut-out holes in the case I ordered from a different Aliexpress supplier do not quite match the phone and I have ordered another case from Amazon. If I have the same problem again it will be easier to return to Amazon, and, with the benefit of hindsight, I should have just bought the phone from Aliexpress to avoid these problems.

First impressions of the phone are very good indeed. Set up was easy and all in English - no baffling Chinese characters. The only glitch was the no 'UK region' but like others have said this seems to make no difference. The phone has already updated itself and the MIUI8 interface seems very intuitive and well thought out. There was over 22G of ROM free which should give me plenty of room for installing numerous apps. A couple of banking apps I have installed work fine. The finger print sensor unlocks the phone with the first touch of the correct finger and it has the standard USB charging socket despite my reading some claims that it hadn't. I didn't realise it had infrared which was easy to set up to remotely control our Samsung TV. Although, it is too early to say how the phone performs it seems very responsive - all working effortlessly and with no fuss. I am delighted with my purchase and would be even more so had I paid for sale price now available!

Did it cover the IR blaster and have a hole in the center of the top? If you ordered a case advertised for "Redmi Note 4" then it will likely have the same problem regarding the cut-out holes. The Snapdragon Redmi Note 4 has an updated outer housing compared to the original Mediatek. In China, the Redmi Note 4 Snapdragon is called the Note 4X. However, the confusing part is that in some markets the Snapdragon version is still just known as Redmi Note 4 but has the same housing as the Chinese Redmi Note 4X and not their Redmi Note 4. Indian Redmi Note 4 is an example of this scenario. Here's a post about the differences. One of the changes is the IR blaster moving from center to the right, hence my question at the start. In order to get a case with the right fitting, you'll probably need to find one advertised as Redmi Note 4X.
Hobbehod
29 Mar 17 1 #109
There is a hole in the centre that doesn't match anything on the phone. There is also a smaller hole partly over the IR blaster and only a small part of the blaster can be seen. It does work with the case on but not as well as without the case. The cut-outs on the back are about 3mm too low down to match the phone's lens, flash and fingerprint sensor. All these work but make the case look shoddy.

Top is the original Redmi Note 4. Centre hole in your case is because that's where the IR blaster is in original. Look for a Redmi Note 4X case. That will have the right hole placement.

Re: AliExpress - think of them as Chinese Amazon but better. Have bought lots of big and small ticket items from over £150 down to 50p (with free shipping!) and all gone smoothly. Even when a no show or wrong item or slight fault, the system protects you without quibble (unlike ebay/PPal). This is because your money paid is held in ESCROW and not released to the retailing vendor until you confirm delivery and are happy. If not, you have recourse that is either refund/return or refund only (if small ticket item) or negotiate a discount. The vendors crave Positive ratings to exist and are usually V. V. happy to make you happy.

Word to the wise - you will probbo have to pay VAT and Customs on this value of item in addition. So add another £40.

how good is this warranty? anytime have any experience with it? phone owner pays shipping?

Edit: edit: terms and conditions

Phone owner pays postage, but you're given $5 Ali express gift voucher to compensate. Provided the phone fault is found to be covered under warranty, they will ship out a replacement new (or equivalent spec new) device within 10 days of receiving it, or credit you with an Ali express voucher to the value you paid (minus ten percent if faulty device older than 6 months). They decide whether they replace the phone or credit you with Ali express voucher. sounds pretty decent really, in theory.

I don't think it'll fit. The 5th image down shows a top view of the phone. It has a centre hole meaning it'll be for the original Redmi Note 4. On the Amazon page in the product details it says 28th Nov for "date first available". The Snapdragon Redmi Note 4/4X with updated housing was first introduced as the India Redmi Note 4 which came out in January.

Try looking for Redmi Note 4X cases but be careful because some might be wrongly advertised. I found this listing which appears to be for the same case and is advertised for Redmi Note 4X as well but the image of the top of the case again shows a hole in the centre which means it would be for the original Note 4. The top of a correct fitting case will look like this:

Thanks for your help really appreciate it. I'm guessing the screen protector for the 4 and 4x would be the same?
dreadzone101
30 Mar 17 1 #127
I'd have assumed so since they both have the same front dimensions and camera/light sensor position. However, the majority of Note 4X screen protector listings on Aliexpress appear to be titled for just Note 4X rather than Note 4 and Note 4X.

Side by side of the 2.
https://i.gyazo.com/3db86bb27f1111a5927329c9749bd880.png
The light sensor and camera might be slightly closer to the speaker, on the Snapdragon so a screen protector with the 3 cut-out holes at the top, mightn't fit properly if it's for the original, depending on how accurate the holes are. Hard to say for certain though.

dreadzone101
30 Mar 17 1 #131
It'll be a standard charger in the box.

Followup to my previous reply, the camera and light sensor position is definitely different enough to have an impact on a screen protector. If you find photos of the 2 versions and superimpose them on each other, they don't line up, so if you are getting a screen protector with 3 hole cut-out, keep that in mind. The ones with a rectangular section cut out from the top should be fine though since the distance between the camera and light sensor is wider in the original compared to Snapdragon.

As you say, with the Note 4, there does not appear to be ANY special naming, so people have to be aware of the fact - hence my post.

Currently there appear to be 3 different named versions of the Note 4, the 4, 4a and 4X, none of which denote it has band 20.

Ditto the word "Global", Xiaomi themselves use this word to differentiate between the 2 sets of available ROMs, NOT what 4G bands the phone can use..

So, my words of caution remain, check VERY carefully before buying, to make sure you get the correct version; if you are buying from Ali Express, check the whole listing, it may say Band20 in the headline, or Global Version, but if the description further down the listing says otherwise, AE wont get you a refund.

A non-phone example: Many, MANY AE sellers list certain clothing products as "Silk", go through the description page and you find (in tiny print) that it is polyester; this is true even of the main Alibaba site; you can go through 10 pages of sellers before finding one genuinely selling the product they advertise as on sale.

AE sellers put up words they think will get hits, regardless of how accurate they are to the listing.

People needed to be aware it does not have a unique name hence your post? Why exactly? Because you believed it should have "Special Edition" naming even though 5 out of 6 Band 20 Xiaomi phones do not have a unique name? The 4A is not a variant of the Note 4. It is a phone from the 5" Redmi line. There are 2 named versions of the Note 4. The Note 4 and Note 4X, the 5.5" successors to the Redmi Note 3 variants. There is a Snapdragon model which is called both, Note 4 or Note 4X depending on the region and the Mediatek Note 4. The Taiwan and Hong Kong Note 4X have B20 which is stated on the specs pages of their respective MI sites, and as linked previously, the 5" Redmi 4A also has B20. The same for this deal which might actually be the Singapore Redmi Note 4, as the official MI Singapore site confirms their Redmi Note 4 as having B20, so I don't see why you're saying "none of which denote it has band 20".

Why do you continue to insist that when the word "Global" is used, it is in relation to ROM only? The packaging itself says "Global Version" on the box as labelled by Xiaomi themselves and is not a case of the seller advertising it after flashing a Global ROM themselves on a China market model. The difference is not the ROM. It has, different bands, different charger included in the box and CE certification as opposed to CCC, yet you continue to refuse to accept that the meaning of "Global" isn't refering to ROM only. The Snapdragon Note 4 was first released in India. The India Note 4 has very limited Band support yet it would come preinstalled with Global ROM but Xiaomi do not advertise it as "Global Version" on the packaging unlike the (Singapore?) model in this deal. MI Note 2 Global Edition is another case where the "Global" is referring to the Global LTE bands.

You spoke about silk on the Redmi 4A thread too and insisted that people should read carefully yet you are unwilling to accept what the specs/description even say because you cannot find other info regarding the matter therefore doubt the truth to the description anyway? You say to be careful, even though you judge that when the word "Global" is used in the title, that it must mean Global ROM only and has nothing to do with Band support. You are uneccessarily worrying people for no reason. The same for the Redmi 4A thread. After it had been concluded there is a B20 model, you stepped in with your doubt and how you couldn't find info on forums, even though it was later confirmed there is a B20 Global Version model.

Just looked at the boxes for all three of my Xiaomi phones; not one of them says "Global Version" (although they do have the CE mark) on the box, even though they arrived with the original Xiaomi sealed packaging.

As for the rest

"[ROM] MIUI 8 Global Beta ROM 7.3.30 For Redmi Note 4 MTK Released! agree"

"ROM] MIUI 8 China Stable ROM V8.1.14.0.MBFCNDI for Redmi Note 4 MTK Released! agree"

"[ROM] MIUI 8 Global Stable ROM V8.2.2.0.MCFMIDL for Redmi Note 4 Qualcomm Released! attach_img agree"

Finally

"Redmi Note 4 MTK Global -- Redmi Note 4 Qualcomm Global -- Redmi Note 4 MTK China"

All taken from the Mi forums; please note 2 different version of Global ROM - but only one has band 20.

As for telling people to be careful, and check the full description; we live in a world where many people have paid £100s for a white box with a brick in it, £100s more for a photo of an X-Box, and at least two couples bought airline tickets to the wrong country for their holiday.

I have even come across one idiot bad mouthing a Samsung Tab Tablet on Amazon, because she thought the microSD slot was a SIM slot and tried to use it as a phone.

BTW, although Mi are shipping these band 20 phones, they still havent advertised the fact on any Mi Forum that I have come across, same as the Note 3 SE (which btw, is a completely better phone than the Note 4X, and probably better than the 4 in most respects); it was shipping for months before anything official was said about it.

People also need to be aware that if they put the wrong ROM on their Mi phone (ie try a band 20 ROM on a non band 20 version of the 4 - or vice versa), it will probably brick the phone. 90% of the non-standard ROMS offered will not work on the band 20 versions.
dreadzone101
31 Mar 17 #148
"Global Version" has CE certification, but CE certification does not mean it is called "Global Version". India version in comparison to the version in this deal is the example I already gave. Despite the Indian version having CE certification and coming pre-installed with Global ROM too, it is not called the "Global Version" by Xiaomi and the difference is down to band support.

Why are you stating there is a Global Mediatek and Global Snapdragon ROM when it wasn't even being discussed whether this was Snapdragon or Mediatek? It's not the same as the Redmi Note 3 which had 2 distinct models for the Snapdragon variant (Kenzo and Kate). Warning people about being careful about SD/MTK ROM flashing would be equivalent to going onto a RN3 SE thread and warning people not to flash the Mediatek ROM. Choosing the right ROM for RN4 isn't down to whether it has B20 or not. India RN4 lacks B20 but would use the same Qualcomm Global ROM as the RN4 "Global Version" with B20. All other B20 Xiaomi phones use the same Global ROM as their non B20 counterparts. The RN3 is the only one to have a seperate ROM for Qualcomm Global and Special Edition.

Why do you reiterate the need to read description and mention lack of advertising when you're judging the phone based off "Global" in the title and not what the description says? You tell people to read carefully when you yourself aren't even accepting what the description says and jump to the conclusion that this phone and the Redmi 4A don't have B20. Just look at all the stores on Aliexpress which sell Redmi Note 4 and Redmi 4A. They make a clear distinction if it's the "Global Version" or if it is just the "Global ROM". A lot of sellers put big labels over the listing image to let people know which it is. Some listings like this Redmi 4A Global Version even have comparison tables which indicate that "Global ROM" means a China version with unsealed box which they flash themselves whereas "Global Version" is sealed and supports B20. Despite this, you seem unable to accept there's a difference between "Global Version" and "Global ROM" and assume when sellers use the word "Global" they mean ROM only, even though "Global Version" is Xiaomi's own naming.
Gentle_Giant
1 Apr 17 #149
There ARE two different chipset versions - just like the Note 3; and three current ROM versions (try to keep up).

You also keep claiming Xiaomi sell them as two different hardware versions - Normal and Global, but despite an intensive search the ONLY references to "Global Version" I can find get answered by Xiaomi as meaning the Chinese and Global ROMs.

So please post some links to official Xiaomi literature (not phone sales adverts) detailing that "Global Version" means band 20 support.

Where did I say there wasn't two different chipsets? In my second reply to you I said "There is a Snapdragon model which is called both, Note 4 or Note 4X depending on the region and the Mediatek Note 4." I said that it's "not the same as the Redmi Note 3 which had 2 distinct models for the Snapdragon variant". You're saying "try to keep up" when it doesn't seem you understand why there are 3 ROMs and have suggested it's related to whether the phone has B20, which it's not. The bit I quoted from my 2nd reply helps explain it. Note 4 can be both Snapdragon or Mediatek but the Snapdragon version is only called Note 4 in regions outside of China hence there is only Global ROM and no China ROM for Snapdragon Note 4 since China Snapdragon release is known as Note 4X. Unlike the RN3, there aren't distinct Snapdragon versions and the phone's band support is irrelevant to the ROM. Infact, the ROM for the Snapdragon Note 4 Global can be flashed onto China Snapdragon known as Note 4X and some sellers state they do this. Since you seem to refuse to believe what sellers say, here is a MIUI forum post with a MOD confirming cross compatibility: http://en.miui.com/thread-541193-1-1.html

"Despite an intensive search". Did you do a intensive search before posting your doubts about the existence of a B20 version on this thread and the Redmi 4A? During our discussion about Redmi 4A, you also refused to believe there was a Redmi 3S with band 20. Visit http://www.mi.com/en/ now go to the Malaysia or Singapore sections in the drop down menu. View those 3 phones on either region. Check the specs. All state Band 20. When people speak of the Redmi Note 3 "Special Edition", you accept they are refering to the band 20 model right? However, you refuse to accept that the models of Redmi Note 4 and Redmi 4A which support Band 20 are known as "Global Version" despite there being 2 different phones that Xiaomi have applied this naming to. There is also the Mi Note 2 that has a "Global Edition" referring to Global LTE. 3 out of 6 B20 Xiaomi phones using Global to state the difference isn't only Global ROM but you still won't accept that. 1 out of 6 B20 Xiaomi phones has a "Special Edition" so you believe that since it isn't "Special Edition" naming it doesn't have B20? Your inability to accept this naming and specs won't change the fact that the versions of the Redmi Note 4 and Redmi 4A that support B20 are called "Global Version".

Not going to try to convince you any further since your stubborness to accept things is unreal. This is what you said on the Redmi 4A thread: "Unless you can find at least three established members of HUKD who can confirm they have a 4a, and ditto for a 3s Prime with the Global ROM* and that it has band 20, I will continue to not believe you". Apparently official MI site specs from Malaysia and Singapore is insufficient (Indonesian Redmi 4A and Hong Kong Redmi 3S also state B20). Funny how to speak of lack of advertising and need for reading description but refuse to believe specs anyway because your "intensive search" must be sufficient to draw conclusions.

The ones that you're seeing for £124ish are probably the China Redmi Note 4X. It's Snapdragon 625 like this deal but the one in this deal has a few differences such as B20 and it's called Note 4, not 4X (In China - Note 4 is Mediatek and Note 4X is Snapdragon).

Some stores sell both and make a distinction between the 2:
Redmi Note 4 'Global Version' - (same as this deal) ~£146
'Original' Redmi Note 4X - (China Snapdragon) ~£126

There's a table in the description that compares the differences. They seem to be the current prices for the particular models. So I don't think you'll find the 'Global Version' model in this deal for the cost of what the Chinese Redmi Note 4X is, at the moment. If B20 isn't an issue or if you don't have a problem with the seller having flashed the Global ROM themselves, then you could get the CN Redmi Note 4X from numerous reputable stores for around £124ish. "Xiaomi Online Store" - the same store as the one in this deal, have a listing for CN Redmi Note 4X

The answer to both questions is Yes. Only buy the global edition though as that supports band 20 for 4g on o2 in the UK. The link in this deal is for the global version but the price has gone up.

Are you sure? Here is how to get it for £121.

Make sure you select "Standard" bundle with no cases or tempered glass. It will then show as $179.99, if you have shipping set to UK it seems to add some stupid warranty for $9 making the price $188.99.

To get the price back down to $179.99, simply change shipping destination as USA and will revert this price.

Then when you add to basket an automatic discount of $20 is applied taking to $159.99.

Now the item is in your basket go to the "Checkout" and now you can change location to the UK and currency to GBP, the price will now show as around £130 (ish) pounds, this amount will vary as subject to currency exchange rates and can then pay for the item.

To get to £121 (Ish), you need to place order on your phone using the Android/iPhone AliExpress app, and this need to be your first order using the App and it will automatically apply a further $10 discount, when converted to GBP this is around £8.50(ish), which then brings the price down to £121.

Currently have a Galaxy note 3 which is stuck on Android v5. Would this actually be an upgrade for me in anyway other than a newer os?
doncoop to Yosser2000
4 Apr 17 #168
in terms of day to day use they'd be comparable i reckon.
note 3 with older too range processor and redmi note 4 with newer mid range.

as you say more up to date OS on the redmi.

in addition you'd get a bigger battery, coupled with more efficient processor, should mean much better battery life for you.

My wife has the Galaxy Note 4, the Xiaomi Note 3SE runs rings around it, and the new Note4 is a similar chipset.

Although the Xiaomi Note 3 is faster in some tests and the Note 4 faster in others, both blow away the Samsung Note 4, it is like comparing the latest i7 laptop with an old Asus EEPC901.

As for the OS question, I LIKE the MIUI interface, it seems to work much better than the Samsung one, or the older Lenovo skinned version of Android I used to own.

My oldest Xiaomi is now over 3 years old and performs flawlessly (and still gets OS and security updates).

It's worth a lot more than the money being asked. It's probably comparable to the 2017 edition of the Samsung Galaxy A which retails at £349 sim free.

I'm delighted with mine and really like MIUI although it's very different to most Android skins. It's almost iOS meets Android. Very customisable and now that I'm used to it I really love it.

This is a quality phone not cheap Chinese tat.

Don't know about this one but I've had a redmi note 3 global edition since jan. Digitizer has just broke on it (its never ever had a knock, bash or a fall). Can't get any replacement parts for these global editions, so bear that in mind. Theres loads of parts for the normal version though! 3 months use out of a £120 phone, not good! I'd give them 1 more chance though because if the phone lasted 2+ years then it would have been a bargain, lovely phone, instant responses and fast browsing, no lag with apps or anything. Pitty!
MDL199 to scousemicky
4 Apr 17 #172
I was told by a YouTube reviewer that the global version of the Redmi Note 4 is actually the same exact phone as the Redmi Note 4x. So parts for that phone should work fine. After only 3 months though can't you get a refund?
dreadzone101 to scousemicky
4 Apr 17 1 #173
Aquiring replacements for this phone shouldn't be an issue. The Redmi Note 3 SE is physically different from the non B20 versions which is a unique case but all the Snapdragon Note 4/4X models have no physical differences from one another. China Note 4X (non B20), Taiwan & Hong Kong Note 4X (B20), India Note 4 (non B20), Singapore & Malaysia Note 4 (B20) are all the same dimensions. So I'd assume they all use the same screen/digitiser, unlike RN3 SE which is 2-3mm longer than normal version.

Get one that's advertised for the Note 4X. It'll fit the version of the phone in this deal. The Note 4X comes only in the updated Snapdragon housing whereas the Note 4 comes in both the old and updated housing. This phone is Note 4 with updated housing, but cases for Note 4 will mostly be for the older Mediatek housing, hence the fitment issue. If the listing has images of the case top, be sure it looks like this. The old style has IR blaster in the top centre, so cases for it will have a middle hole along the top edge, which won't be right for this phone.

After reading all the positive comments I decided to order the phone (30 March); it arrived this morning (12 April).:smiley:
Two problems so far: I started the set-up and on the 'Your Region' screen there is no UK/Europe option and it won't let me move forward without entering something. MIUI takes time to get used too but now i absolutely love it. App permissions are par for the course on Android since Marshmallow. If it's a mainstream app allowing all permissions shouldn't be a problem.

MIUI is very aggressive at closing running background apps so i recommend switching off power saving mode Settings>battery>Manage apps battery usage and under power saving modes select off - it's on by default

There is something in Settings that allows you reverse order and switch off those buttons at the bottom.

There is also the rest of Settings where there is that floating ball settings to access same buttons.

Hi All,

Mine arrived about an hour ago, delivered by Royal Mail. No Duty to pay. I ordered it on the 29th of March, so was quite surprised it took awhile to be delivered (as the Retailer only dispatched it on the 6th of April), when others who had ordered after, had theirs delivered before me. It came fully sealed. I was overjoyed to discover the charging adapter inside was British and not European, as I thought the retalier would send a British convertor separately. Really happy indeed, woo hoo!!

Looking forward to inserting Micro Sim and MicroSD card from my ageing Galaxy S4 and give it a whirl once it is charged. I bought a Nillkin Frosted Case for it when I bought it on the 29th of March, which arrived on the 4th of April.

Hope others who are waiting have received theirs and enjoy their Easter weekend getting to know their new phone

In the order they appear during setup: Language to 'English UK'; Region to 'Falklands'; manually set time to British Summer Time +0. I did the whole setting up, large system update [over wifi], transfer of stuff from old phone etc BEFORE taking my O2 sim from my old phone and inserting it into the Xiaomi; once it rebooted and I entered my sim password, the phone automatically set the carrier to O2; initially it was only selecting EDGE, but a quick deselect and reselect of 'Prefer LTE' in the mobile data settings, and all fine with 4G showing straight away.

Its not possible to use another SMS App to replace the default Messaging app.

I like Signal but the non SMS stuff Signal specific side works but any SMS text sometimes go to Signal and sometimes to the default SMS Messaging app.
It worked for a couple of hours and then you have to dig in both Apps for your SMS.
Anyone encountered this issue?
On my non Xiaomi mobile, there is a Android Setting called Default SMS app with the choices Messaging, Signal, WhatsApp, etc.
But this Xiaomi has no such Android Setting.
Is this right?

dreadzone101

If you mean it's ignoring it as in it won't function properly as default app, then go to 'Security' app > 'Permissions' and change Signal so that it has a green tick beside the relevant entries in its permissions list. Some might be grey question mark symbol or red x. Just tap on them and change to 'accept'.

As for your earlier comment about not honouring on reboot. Go to Security > Permissions > Autostart. Toggle Signal to allow autostart. Also go to recent apps drawer (bottom left capacitive key). Find Signal app, drag down on it till you see a lock icon then select it.

Are you certain you ordered the phone in this deal and didn't get mixed up with another listing for the Redmi 4 Pro/Prime Snapdragon 625? What you say about the leds being beside the camera fits the Redmi 4 housing. It's a smaller 5" phone whereas the Note 4 is a 5.5" phone. Also the Redmi 4 doesn't have a Global Version, hence sellers flash the Global ROM onto the China version, which would be the reason for the Chinese packaging and open box.

Drop down menu toggles can be customised. Drag down Notifications menu twice and you should see "Sort" as the last toggle option. Alternatively, go to Settings > Notifications & Status Bar > Toggle Positions. The GPS toggle will be further down the list. On the right there's a 3 dash symbol. Use that to drag GPS toggle to the top so that it appears in drop down menu. Likewise there's Mobile Data and Wi-Fi toggles which you can drag up to the top of the list.

Thank you for the handholding. When I said I found the Defaults, I meant I went to Android Settings -> Installed Apps. I saw at the bottom of screen the choices: {Defaults,More} and chose Defaults. There I saw Messaging set to use Signal as Default Messaging App and jiggled it back to Messaging and back to Signal. It cautioned me about Security and something not being able to use RCS.[?]
I was able to follow the second set of instructions you gave on locking in the Recents list.
I confirm I have set Signal for AutoStart via Security app -> Permissions -> AutoStart.

However, the first set of instructions, I am unable to obey because when I go to
Security App -> {AutoStart,Permissions,Other Permissions,Install via USB}
I choose Permissions and then I see: Body Sensors 1 of 1 apps allowed, etc. I don't see green nor red ticks here.
Please clarify.
Cheers!

I definitely ordered the right one as my aliexpress order shows the 5.5" model but they seem to have sent me the redmi 4 note pro
dreadzone101
19 Apr 17 1 #273
Hmm, perhaps your Security app is slightly different from mine. When you go into Security > Permissions > Permissions, do you see a list of apps? If so and Signal is on there, go into it and there should be the Green tick menu. If not go to Settings > Installed Apps, then find Signal on the list. Go into it. At the bottom should be Permissions Manager. In there you'll be able to grant it control of certain abilities. The menu will look like this:
https://i.gyazo.com/b4f354b67882b694fdb4c80302ddf302.png
Clicking on each should give options "Accept", "Notify", "Deny". Change the ones you think you need to "Accept"

If it's an error on their part see what solution they provide. If they don't provide a favourable one and it is indeed the 5" Redmi 4 Snapdragon 625, then perhaps you might better trying to sell it here. 2 days ago, someone posted this thread and was considering buying it.

There is normally a red sticker on the side of the box saying 'global version'.

19 Apr 17 1 #279
'Signal' is a third party SMS app, which the person whom I was replying to wanted to use as a replacement to the default SMS app. It's not a pre-installed MIUI feature. It's installed via Google Play Store. The system default SMS is just 'Messenging'. Mi Cloud and the default MIUI SMS app have their Permissions greyed out. I suspect that because they're system default apps, they have full permissions and only aftermarket apps have user permission control.

I bought two of these phones, one arrived thursday and it updated to miui 8.2... as soon as I put in my wifi pw etc, it also came with a proper 3 pin power adapter inside the sealed box.
The second phone came today, the box was sealed but outside it was a travel adapter and inside a 2-pin european power adapter, also it seems to be stuck on miui 8.1.15.. I've tried all day but it keeps saying no update available.
Both phones had the global version sticker on the box and both have stickers with model no. 2016102 on them.

Not bothered about the adapter but why can't I update the second phone.

I have the same problem in that mine won't update either. Please keep us posted if you find a solution please. Mine came with the European plug with a travel adaptor.

19 Apr 17 1 #282
Mine arrived yesterday, very happy with it as a replacement for my old Nexus 4.
If it helps anyone, mine is Model No. 2016102 & has Miui Global 8.2.2.0 running off Android 6.0.1 MMB29M, though it had been connected to wi-fi for a while before I checked the version so it may have auto updated itself.

19 Apr 17 #283
Just went to the Miui website and it says that there are the current ROM's for each model:

Redmi Note 4 Qualcomm Global: Version: V8.1.15.0.MCFMIDI (MIUI8)
Redmi Note 4 MTK China: Version: V8.2.2.0.MBFCNDL (MIUI8)
Redmi Note 4 MTK Global: Version: V8.0.4.0.MBFMIDG (MIUI8)

Based on this, I do have the latest version (8.1.15...).
echo06
19 Apr 17 #284
Mine must've updated automatically cos i just checked and its on miui 8.2.2.0 and where it says update automatically over wifi it is on.i haven't checked to see if there are any probs with that latest update mind.i would've preferred to have had the choice but obviously not knowing my way round the phone i didnt know it was set to update straight away
dreadzone101
19 Apr 17 #285
My assumption would be that the server they access to get the update is dependant market region of the phone. The different plugs in the boxes would suggest they're from different origin regions. Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia's Redmi Note 4 have B20 so the 'Global Version' mustn't be from just one of those regions and maybe the server in one region is more up to date than the others. The downloads section of the MIUI website shows the current latest Redmi Note 4 Global ROM is 8.1.15.0 so perhaps your second phone is pulling update information based on Global MIUI website servers whereas your first phone pulled information from the regional servers due to its origin. Redmi 4A Global Version B20 with Global ROM was available to buy before the Global ROM was even put online. So sometimes the MIUI servers are lagging behind. It's strange though and only just speculation on my part. This unboxing video for the same phone has EU plug but got 8.2.2.0 update and even the comments above suggest there's a mix of ones who got this and ones who have the current latest according to MIUI downloads.

19 Apr 17 #286
Mine is running v8.2.4.0 Miui global 8.2 stable MCFMIDL. It came with a EU plug in a sealed box, with a separate adapter.
dreadzone101
20 Apr 17 2 #287
Found this thread about that ROM version on the official Singapore MI forum. But then came across this unboxing thread which shows the phone provided by MI Singapore has a UK plug inside the box which some people have mentioned getting. So the variation in getting updates and whether its UK or EU plug inside the box, is rather confusing.

In case vendor put in their own custom firmware,
I read somewhere to doublecheck (pls confirm)
In Android Settings ->
Activate Developer Options by tapping 7 times on Build Version/MUI Version.
Then start again looking for new entry.
Android Settings -> Additional Settings -> Developer Options -> MUI Unlock Status
Check that its locked.
Is this a good criteria you dont have half house firmware?
But, then isnt it possible to lock it again or was it unroot it again?

Mine occassionally after powering up makes an electrical sparking cracking noise.
I have noticed it Silent Mode, Airplane Mode and at Volume zero.
It happened earlier on during setup and with lots of apps but rarely now and also uninstalled most of apps to doublecheck. Got 3 days to do formal dispute but have mesg them and they said update System and show video which I am wondering how. I asked them about my Default Messaging issue but had no satisfactory answer but had tried dreadzone's suggestions and testing it out.
It crackled as I typed prev line. Ugh.
dreadzone101
20 Apr 17 #290
Vendor ROMs seem to be very rare nowadays and are only a problem with China market versions since they come pre-installed with China ROM which doesn't have Google Play etc so sellers install Global ROM which does. If an official Global ROM is available sellers will mostly just use this then advertise it as "Official Global ROM OTA updates" and even state it is opened box so it would be highly unlikely for them to open up a 'Global Version' phone that's pre-installed with Global ROM and then install their own, then reseal it. If the phone is released in China only and there is no official Global ROM available, sellers will sometimes create their own. An example of this would be the 'Redmi Pro'. This listing from 'Xiaomi Online Store' is advertised as just "Multi Language Support Google Play" and even says "Firmware: Custom ROM" under item specifics so I doubt they'd be deceptive and have installed vendor ROM on the RN4.

just got mine, quick question,

can you only install the micro sd card with a micro sim?

I have a nano sim, and looks like that goes where the micro sd card goes. if i am right i will have to order a micro sim from vodafone so i can also use my storage micro sd card.
dreadzone101
20 Apr 17 1 #301
It won't say Global on the box because there is no 'Global Version' Redmi 4 Snapdragon 625. The box wasn't sealed when you got it, was it? A factory sealed Redmi 4 has China ROM pre-installed and the seller installs the Global ROM themselves. The 'Global Version' Redmi *Note* 4 is factory pre-installed with Global ROM and has B20 and English packaging whereas the phone you received is the China market Redmi 4 hence the Chinese packaging. Here's a table of differences that the seller has in the description. They mixed up the 1st one (this deal) with the 4th one (the phone you and 2 others appear to have received).
dreadzone101
20 Apr 17 1 #302
Yeah, the 1st sim slot is micro and the 2nd slot is combi nano sim or micro sd. If you already have a nano sim you don't need to switch your sim. You can just use a nano to micro adaptor. Not sure about other networks but if you order a free sim from Three or GiffGaff, it will be a "trio" sim with nano to micro or regular size adaptors. Image of what I mean. You'd use the middle part.

brilliant post many thanks, looks like screen size is only difference?

dreadzone101
20 Apr 17 #304
Unfortunately no. 'Global Version' is more than just pre-installed with Global ROM. It's also wider band support. If you look at the comparison table, one of the key features of the Global Version compared to the other variants is that it has B20 and the others don't. You can see it in red text in the network section under the "Global Version Redmi Note 4" only. So the Redmi 4 SD625 is essentially a 5" non B20 version of this phone. One of the other 2 people who received this incorrect phone mentioned it being a problem because they're with O2.

20 Apr 17 #305
nice one thank you for confirming, I will check out ebay for the adaptors.!
dreadzone101
20 Apr 17 #306
You don't need to buy an adaptor off eBay. Most free sims nowadays are trio sims and will come with the adaptor you need. I mentioned Three and GiffGaff in my previous comment. Checked Vodafone and they do the same as well so just order a new free payg sim from them and use your nano sim in the middle portion cutout:

if i remember rightly this is to do with your launcher..... miui is a bit funny here.

set your launcher back to the miui default. then change the lockscreen wallpaper, which should take. you can then change back to your launcher of choice.

i know it definitely is the case when choosing one of the defaults. wouldn't be surprised if it's adding your own as well.
