Why?
Is something wrong with x99? I'm considering one but I see so many people saying it's "dead" (although idek why, somebody please explain)

Strangest thing is that Intel 'HEDT' doesn't even support ECC?
Well, even if Intel are unwilling to move on price, Ryzen should stop some of their crazy market segmentation.
The real problem (aside from this being a workstation part without ECC) is that while the board is good value (£200 on Amazon), the CPUs are not.
These chips won't be cheap (high end platform) but should at least put pressure on the vastly overpriced >8 cores Intel HEDT processors.

How is it a dead socket?! It supports Haswell E/ Broadwell E... Performance is top of the line...

And performance was cheap back in 2016. A 5820K could be had for £280ish along with a £200 motherboard. All X99 boards have very strict design specifications for the VRMs too, so you don't get VRM issues like on Ryzen. You have to pay £200ish for a decent Ryzen board with good VRMs and as many features as X99 anyhow.
Not to mention that Ryzen only has 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes. 5820K or 6800K has 28 PCIe 3.0 lanes. Invest £480 back in 2016 instead of £480 for a R7 1700 with decent motherboard and similar performance (gaming) and features.
I'd say X99 was a great investment back in 2016, but not so much now, given inflation and brexit.

AMD Ryzen 2700 and 4700 series is reportedly going to run on LGA socket X390 (single socket) and X399 (dual socket) chipsets.
Never understand this "dead socket" talk. Intel pretty much stick to one or two processor generations per socket these days, so unless you upgrade your processor every generation your motherboard is going to be useless by the time your next upgrade comes around.
The majority of people are looking at bang for buck, it's better imo to punch above your weight in last generation tech that is being sold off cheap than try to buy the latest generation end up with a lower tier piece of hardware. It's OK saying "oh but I can swap this i3 out for an i7 in the future", when you likely as not will never do that. By the time you get around to it something new will have come along.
*** Whoops, looks like offer is said to be expired at the end. So probably not

It's really just down to price of mobo/RAM/CPU that push it way north of a well specced Ryzen combo.
For that reason and given the competition from AMD I really see no reason at all to go X99 for a new build.

Think this is the cheapest I have seen an X99 board for. Maybe mix this with a second hand 5820K as CPU prices are silly since Brexit - I paid £410 for a 5820K + Asus x99A mobo just after the vote and before the price changes.
I would be interested in seeing what a similar priced Ryzen look like
