Word of warning from a Ford mechanic mate of mine. He wouldn't buy one of these heavily tuned tiny turbo engines. Under warranty they will repair but a second hand one is a mistake.

It's apparently the most seen engine in the workshop for failures you tend to get at end of life on larger engined cars.

11 Mar 17 2 #10
True, so if you give it back at end of lease its not an issue. If however you decide to buy it out end of lease I'm just giving people a heads up. I love fords and have had many in the last 20 years. It's just these heavily tuned small engine turbo cars you need to be careful about. Personally I would go for a 1.4 petrol over one of these.

You don't have the option to buy at the end of a lease. It's like hiring a car on holiday, you give it back (hopefully in good condition) and you forget all about it.

Most (All?) leases will give you the option of extending the lease or a price to buy the car

All lease companies offer to sell you the car at the end. It's the most profitable way they can get rid of it at end of lease. I've driven leased vehicles for the last 10 years and they have all offered to sell the car to me at the end for a ridiculous price. I thrash cars I lease and would never buy one because I know exactly how it's been treated.

Never happened to me and I have leased cars from Ford directly. My last one was already sold and on it's way to its new owner via BCA when they drove it off my drive. A lot of leases go in to the approved dealer network too and some are leased at a loss to facilitate the used stock.

Sure you aren't confusing this with PCP?

I've driven a fiesta with this engine and it was genuinely fun in the city. Not sure about only 125bhp on a focus sized car though. I know it's turbo so the torque issue won't be a major problem, but these days 150bhp in this size car is the norm.

What a stupid ill informed comment! The 1.0 EcoBoost is an incredibly well engineered engine matching reasonable performance with efficiency. While it may not be for everyone I've driven the Fiesta with the same power train and it's superb. By the way I'm currently driving a Mercedes C350E Sport which I suppose is in your view 0 to 60 in 3 days being a hybrid rather than 5.9s and 155mph (limited)!

plastic tubes to deal with coolant what the heck.
The who point of a lease car is probably having to not deal with reliability issues and to have care free driving, looks like those engines fail anywhere at anytime, stranding you in the process.
Lots of poor quality engineering in the next, sounds like the engine is under a lot of pressure and using inferior parts to boot.
Seems those hoses are used across the range so if I had one I'd be replacing them out for proper hoses, utter crap they are making customers go through and as usual with warranty companies/dealers trying to see if the client will pay for it until they give in if at all. Shocking

Had many small engine cars mainly Japs and you rev the tits out of them, that's how you get the most out of them. This just seems retarded way to do things.

I've had a Focus Zetec 125 on lease for 2 years. Ended in 2015 and I ended up buying the car outright. I did sell it 6 months later for more money than my settlement fee.

The reason, seeing the 208 GTI Prestige on here. Had it on an 18 month lease which expires in 3 weeks hence looking for something else. The 208 GTI is a horrible car, so now I'm looking for something else.

...and it's back to a Focus 125, only this time I can get a Titanium for less than I was paying for a Zetec 2-4 years ago.

The engine is superb and this is a whole lotta car for the price. Ford can't get anywhere near this price on a Titanium and they told me they don't know how FP are doing it when I went for a test drive yesterday.

The total rental is less than the depreciation, according to Ford themselves.

FP say this price won't be achievable after 31st March.

Well, you better not want to buy a fast car ever again. Emissions regs make this the only way to go for fast, cheap cars.

Personally, I've had 3 cars in a row with 1.4 turbos - none of them have had any problems with the engine or turbo.
bma1445
12 Mar 17 #62
You're allowed "reasonable wear and tear". Anything more than that and you'll have to get it repaired before handing back, or pay for the dealer to rectify them.

Most contracts specifically state what's reasonable to avoid arguments at the end.

Genuine question about leasing...

What's the difference between an online lease like this deal, compared with PCP through a dealership.

The dealerships I've spoken to offer PCP with the same limited mileage but if you go over the mileage it's not an issue as long as you're taking out another contract on another vehicle. It's only if you hand the vehicle back and you've done excess miles that you'd pay the pence per mile charge.

You'll also have a bit of a deposit on the next contract.

12 Mar 17 #69
PCP always offer option to buy at end of lease usually with price stated upfront

PCH - which this deal is an example of - often don't offer the ability to purchase at the end this is because of Tax implications stated by HMRC they are not allowed to sell you the car at the end.
Some lease companies will give you a settlement figure and you can sell to a thrid party - not same name and address - so you can sell and transfer back to a mate.
Others such wont offer a purchase price at all.
Third - of which I have no experience I believe some lease companies have a way around this - they internally transfer the vehicle to one of their group companies and then as it is a different owner they can sell you the car.

I don't class a 125 bhp fiesta as a fast car. Personally I wouldn't buy anything less than 170 bhp these days. Not bothered about tax and emissions. And insurance isn't an issue for me.
nipstyler
12 Mar 17 1 #74
And the troll has to get personal. I wanted to provide some information which had been given to me from a Ford service mechanic of 20 years. I wouldnt buy lease or borrow a fiesta these days. But if I was forced to I wouldn't pick this engine choice. With the new vehicle road fund licence having tiny engined cars doesn't give you the same benefit anymore as low emissions vehicles are now from April more expensive. I'd go for the most power I could get up to the new minimum.
nipstyler
12 Mar 17 #75
Fair play. If I was going to lease personally I probably would too. However I do about 35k a year in work miles and would never contemplate buying my ex company car. So I drive it in the way I would have driven my cars in my youth. It puts a smile on my face and I enjoy myself. Knowing I don't pay for tires, insurance, service, mot, repairs, etc etc. A proper car is meant to be driven. If I had to do 35k miles a year in a fiesta I would die inside..

Mada06
12 Mar 17 1 #90
Clearly it is. It seems others in this thread have never been offered the chance to buy them. I've leased directly from multiple manufacturers and the process has always been the same. I receive a letter about a month or so before the lease ends with a collection date, I'm reminded of my obligations regarding the condition and then the handover is done on my drive. The car gets driven away and I move on to the next. You still haven't proven to me that 99% of all leases have the option to buy, you have just become aggressive for no real reason...

The very fact I have chosen to lease the car means I'm unlikely to want to buy it. I'm entering in to a typical 2 year period so I can drive a new car every 2 years. I don't want to tie my cash up buying a £30k+ car nor do I want to own it when the warranty expires and I have to get it MOT'ed. All of the benefits of a lease is removed if you choose to buy it at the end!

I accept that circumstances might mean some people are offered the chance to buy it, but that's not norm.

soldierboy001
13 Mar 17 #93
Their are basically 2 types of lease hire companies or deals one that is a sole lease hire company and those that lease cars as agents i.e. a motor manufacturer the first type you normally have to ask if you can purchase the car but sometimes they may ask you, then after you have found out the value of the car in question you can haggle a price between yourself and the lease hire company. the second type who act as an agent may not be allowed to sell you the car under the terms of condition between themselves and the owning company. I f you wish to purchase the car at the end of a lease you will need to start negotiations at least 6 weeks prior to collection date. This is information gleaned from internet sites which I did to try to settle the argument, can you yes or no, whose been offered and who hasn't and why. Not bothered myself because I bought my new car cash.

This is a good enough car for the money, especially with the new '17 road taxes.

So, another problem.
I rang my insurance to change from my old car to new, and they said the reg I was given starting BV wasn't showing as anything. They manually added the car details anyway and sorted me out.
I emailed Fleet Prices to enquire as to the issue, and then drove my new car around a bit for a test drive and went to the shops.
The reply I got hours later said please confirm your registration is BG.....etc. I replied with the BV reg (rest is the same, difference is the V and the G), and their reply was 'So you've got the wrong reg plate on?'
I was stumped at this point, and checked my documentation. Everything I've had, all emails, the contract etc all have the BV reg on. Where had she got the BG reg from?
I then had an email at 16:35 forwarded from Ford Lease to say;
Tell the customer to go to Halfords and get it changed to the BG reg, then send us the bill.
I emailed back at 16:39 asking 'Rochelle' from Fleet Prices to call me immediately. By 16:52 I'd heard nothing so rang Fleet Prices, who didn't answer. They'd all clocked off early. I then rang the number for Ford that was in the forwarded email, same thing.
So checking on the gov.uk website tax/MOT checker the BV reg doesn't exist, but the BG reg is a Ford Focus.
Now, does this mean the wrong reg plate is on my car? Or have Ford made an error when registering with the DVLA and BV is the correct plate?
I have no way of telling without the V5, and anybody who can help has buggered off home without resolving the issue.
I'm in work at 7am tomorrow until 4pm, with hopefully a break at some point to try and sort it by phone.
Needless to say I'm fuming as I can't drive it now as it's probably un-taxed.
Rubbish customer service, and I've let them know by email how annoyed I am now.
ClownHat
26 Apr 17 #119
Ford Lease are open until 6pm, and they apparently can't help me as I've gone through Fleet Prices and they haven't 'set me up on the system yet' so can't confirm what the reg is supposed to be.
Fleet Prices website says they're open until 7pm. When I call them it eventually cuts me off saying to ring during office hours.

So I've spoken to 'Lee' at Ford in Nottingham now who actually knows what he's talking about.
Apparently my car reg has always been BG, but somebody entered it on the system wrong a month ago so all my documents say BV. This is the same system that makes the reg plates, so BV got put on.
He has confirmed it's definitely supposed to be BG (checked the VIN on my car on the phone), and told me to go to Halfords to get plates and they'll reimburse me. Surprisingly on ringing Halfords they won't take an email/my word as proof, and need a V5 which I don't have.
I've emailed Lee back saying I want them to make me new plates and deliver them ASAP (supposed to be going away in the car this weekend).
No reply.

If you can wait until tomorrow can you pop to your local Ford dealer? Most are open until 7pm. They will be able to check what reg is set against the VIN Number. Then if it is wrong you can pop to Halfords (open until 8pm) with the letter from ford and get the correct plates made up.

You won't get pulled as you won't be on the DVLA database so no ANPR hits.

To be honest for such a monumental cock up I would expect a big company like Ford to send somebody out tomorrow to fit the correct plates. Sounds like that's not an option though.

I hope the deal is worth the hassle we all seem to be going through for this.

Mine arrived a week ago. I received an email asking for feedback and I informed them that I wouldn't be using FP again after leaving me without a car for 2 weeks. Absolutely no sniff of an apology. Shame, because that's all it takes. I wish sales people would realise that a personal apology goes a long way.

My car now has the correct plates. I had to drive it to Bristol Street Motors Ford to get them to do it.

After all that, would it be a smart idea if I went for this deal? This would be my first car, and I'm in no rush to receive the car. It's still not acceptable what they did!
(If the deal is still even available)

Accidental issue of incorrect number plates is something that has happened for decades and is only difficult to sort out now a days because of the strict way that they are allowed to issued due to people cloning. If you have never made an error then I applaud you, but try to keep it up into your old age and beyond the grave.

So should I go for the deal...

If it suites your requirements yes, but personally not for me, a "B" max at this I would go for but not a Focus. Nothing to do with the body size and engine, I just don't like the Focus.
