It requires Steam, the code is usually on an insert in the box, so you don't need the discs themselves.
Steamcharts reports a peak of ~2000 players at about 8pm, though last time I played it (about a month ago), the multiplayer was pretty dead. Even getting into a Team Deatchmatch game was a wait.
Single player campaign isn't bad for the price/a CoD game, but I wouldn't buy it for the multiplayer at this point.

boxed Pc version won't drop lower though so this is a worthwhile purchase if you don't have it yet
