A season pass isn't mandatory to play online, only the relevant console's online subscription?

No season pass is needed for online play.
I take it you have Xbox Live.

I do yes maybe I read it wrong but it looked like they wanted £30 for everything which meant I might as well have bought it new and got that with it

Still without season pass far less likely to pick up online matches for anything other than DM or TDM as not enough players. Tried a bunch of times trying to pick up domination and other match types Inc hardcore but no luck, got season pass boom getting matches in all game modes! I would advise season pass if you like any game modes other than DM \ TDM.
