For me £199 for a new one at Argos is the better deal. Yeah these used ones might by open box but it's a gamble. I guess one could return it if say the battery is knackered or other glitches. Lucky dip?

Deal seems hot, as it's very difficult to get a "perfect" one for £179.99 elsewhere, however... I paid £309 for a 64GB iphone SE last week, to me £179.99 seems a little high for a device that was released in September 2013. I assume it's a 16gb version too? IMO I don't think it's a good investment, you'll lose money on it even within 6 months if you tried to sell it. I'm voting hot, as per the rules, but I don't think it's recommended.

you have to keep fiddling with it as the price keeps moving around but its still available, posted this in another deal earlier, you can get them for as cheap as £105. When you do the refresh process, make a call, this activates it on the o2 system, request unlock, pay off phone and cancel air time.

If you have the extra money it's really not a hard decision, SE is all but a 6s in 5s size and will accept updates for years to come 5s will stop shortly. O2 has new SE a couple of weeks ago at the same price haven't checked recently but worth a look.
Pjcity
8 Mar 171#20
probably worth going for the se if you can afford it. it will last far longer on updates than the 5s and is a decent price as well
Surely updates won't stop for 5s. They'll keep ramming updates down your throat until you get annoyed with the popups and/or slowness before you decide to get their next rip off device. I have an ipad mini.
eslick
8 Mar 171#28
they stop ios updates, ipads 2 and 3 stopped with ios10, only a matter of time before they stop this but to be honest, i would be waiting before doing an update on a 5S to 11 as it could make them run so slow.
link is in the comment above

grayslick
8 Mar 171#34
Avoid O2 refresh if you can. Even if you follow the process exactly and cancel the airtime they can sometimes 'accidentally' debit your bank account for the entire 24 months airtime, takes weeks to get this back. Also in my case they also issued a bogus credit default (and didn't tell me anything about it) and therefore it destroyed my Experian credit rating. It look me a alot of time, hassle and effort to correct the credit default error.
All for a slightly cheaper second hand iphone 6 (in my case). Never again
toonarmani
8 Mar 17#35
Or buy the SE on PAYG for £249. I'm sure some would rather pay the slight extra and not have a) an extra entry on their credit file b) potential refresh process issues.
But good deal for those that don't mind going through the refresh process.
benjyyy
8 Mar 17#36
But on PAYG, o2 won't unlock it for 12 months and then they charge you £15. You can do it straight away for free on refresh.
jayjay266
8 Mar 17#37
Yes but don't u think stopping updates for ipads 2 and 3 were long overdue? Don't see why they can't taper off the updates earlier or at least allow people to hide the updates permanently so that old devices are still usable. And yes I know - planned obsolescence.
amour3k
8 Mar 17#38
In all the above info's, neither OP's Deal Post, or anyone else, has mentioned the internal 'storage space' of this iPhone 5s going forward?.
I'm guessing that that's not as important again ..... :-)
eslick
8 Mar 171#39
Totally agree, didn't see the payg ones but if o2 still unlock for £15 as soon as you get it, they did at Christmas then that's the way to go unless the extra cash is better in your pocket as it is for some.
Would have said yes to the 2 as the two we have were grinding to a halt before the last update anyway, our 3 that was fine not many apps, email and browsing all fine then suddenly it too starts grinding to a stop. Wonder what that could be......just don't mention planned obsolescence to Appe :disappointed:

Has anyone mentioned that you may not get a full twelve month warranty on these secondhand iPhones. The warranty starts then the original user started it up.
eslick
8 Mar 17#44
No because you get 12 months o2 warranty and what ever is left of the apple warranty since it was activated. Depending on the refurb class this could be nearly 12 months even the lesser ones will have 4 to 6 months on, though obviously some may have less.

Smartfonestore have some 64gb SE grade B's for £299-£319, and a Brand New o2 one for £369. I have had good experiences with their grade B's before.
Have always liked the 5s and SE, a proper phone size, but I will stick with my great z3 compacts, which can often be found for about £130-£150 now. The best android phone still, Certainly the best small one, in my opinion. I have the 6th gen ipad touch too, very nice back up gadget, so thin and good quality.

Good deal! Still does what most people will want from it, and you don't need fingers like E.T to operate it one-handed!
Probably worth not applying too many more updates it though, as it won't be long until Apple kill these off by releasing an update that slows down things massively on older hardware - or as they put it, and update that is "optimised for the newer hardware"

9 Mar 171#62
Not the OP's fault but this is really misleading - O2 calls it 'iPhone 5s Like New' but it defaults to 'Perfectly Fine' which is actually a 'grade B' handset. For the money, it's really good but the 5s genuinely does struggle with iOS 10 (funny that!) and 16GB of storage becomes very restrictive - you can trick yourself into thinking it would be ok, but 32GB is really the baseline now. Even Apple thinks so, they are giving you 32GB SKUs for the same price as 16GB previously, how generous! Jokes aside, you can get by with 16GB but it becomes a nuisance more quickly than you might think.

I think a 16gb phone is still perfectly manageable. I use Spotify to stream music so don't have much stored on the phone. I've got 1.5gb of photos/videos and I also pay the 79p a month for extra iCloud storage. Still got 4gb free on the phone (and thats with 6 screens worth of apps installed). Now I had put the sim in the phone earlier today, but hadn't used it to make or receive any calls. My dilemma now is if I cancel the airtime tomorrow, will I still be able to get it unlocked?
