Do you realise that how many times it has been the lowest price of £29.99 in the last 2 years - ONCE!!!!

And if you are smart and wanna wait for that to come again, very well, you can wait while the others who are going to use it can get it for the next lowest price of £34.99 which is absolutely great and is a perfect price for this tablet. And don't forget that you get this specifications for the tablet only because it is hugely subsidised

* I recommend ticking the box that makes these a gift, so they don't come linked to your Amazon account, as there's reports on Amazon of people receiving one that was linked to someone else's account and having all their info on it.*

I have one of these, these are the pros and cons IMO:
Pros:
- extremely low price, I can't see how anyone could find the same functionality in a new tablet for less
- can add Play Store A̶P̶I̶s̶ APKs and have Amazon stuff as well
- good for trying out to see if a tablet is for you, first-time tech users, and if you are on a budget. Also good as a secondary tablet or spare, I have one that I just keep for anyone to use as a music player in the kitchen, with no-one's personal stuff on. If you take one of these out with you, it sounds weird but it's a relief knowing you don't have a £400 piece of kit on you
- good for the elderly if they are not good with tech and don't want to make a big financial commitment
- really amazing what you get for £34, I use Youtube, Spotify, TuneIn (radio), Evernote (note taking/organisation), Kindle reader, iPlayer Radio, iPlayer tv, Netflix (for subscribers) and obviously internet browsing, all for that price.
- expandable with an SD card
- I find the size ideal for taking with me on a trip etc. as it fits in my handbag easily

Cons:
- screen resolution is not great, fine for watching films, shows up when reading so sometimes you have to zoom in. Usable but definitely not crisp.
- no GPS, so Google Maps not that accurate, but then most people have that on their phones anyway
- as you are bypassing Amazon's OS, you don't know when they might pull the plug on that
- poor camera (ditto re:phone)

Just to make something clear, like most tablets this tablet does not have 4G, it is wifi-only.

If anyone wants real-world figures, the fire I use for reading (with moon+reader pro on CM12.1 rom) I get ~15hours of reading over ~7days of standby. Compared to kobo aura one which gives ~17hours over ~7days or kindle paperwhite 3 which gives ~25hours over ~7days.

All with wifi turned off.
lnz
21 Mar 17 #158
Not in my opinion.
A Kobo (like a kindle) uses e-ink technology. You can read for hours and hours without getting sore eyes, and the battery lasts for a very long time (weeks?).
Admittedly (if the Kobo/Kindle is not backlit) you cannot read in the dark.
This is a tablet. It emits light. I find reading on tablets something possible, rather than pleasurable. And the battery will probably last one day.
On the other hand, on this you can put apps, games, which you cannot do on a K/K.

FireOS runs like a pig even without the extra strain on resources of google play services, so if you have no need of the amazon "features" I would definitely recommend installing a custom rom if your tablet is on fireos 5.3.2 or lower. Use the fire supertool to install kingroot, swap kingroot for supersu, install flashfire then flash the rom of your choice (I'd recommend Fire Nexus) and install nova. Whole procedure is simple and takes under 30minutes and the tablet performs much better.
ady85

You don't need to.

Just follow the guide at https://www.howtogeek.com/232726/how-to-install-the-google-play-store-on-your-amazon-fire-tablet/ ( to get Google Play Store installed ) and then the guide at https://www.howtogeek.com/270022/how-to-use-a-different-home-screen-launcher-on-the-amazon-fire-tablet-without-rooting-it/?tag=823814-20 ( to get the home button to launch Nova Launcher )

And all of the above is possible directly from the Fire itself - no rooting necessary so no invalidating of warranty either

You can add any apps to the kids mode, you just have to install google play services and the play store under the child profile, not the main profile. See XDA-Dev

I have both a N7 2012 and fire 5th gen, and whilst the fire isn't winning any prizes for speed it's an order of magnitude faster than the N7 and its snailspeed Hynix eMMC.

But that's the scary thing. Just because they're more qualified doesn't mean they should be trusted or relied upon to give accurate or unbiased opinions without their own personal bugbears influencing their decisions. When you go to a doctor's with an ingrowing toenail and he/she blames smoking on the cause, that isn't impartial advice for the good of the patient.
dean_brfc

It's a shame as the Kid mode is really good...just limits you to amazon appstore only apps. I also found that Plex wouldn't work in kids mode if you don't have a Plex pass.

You will have limited scope of multitasking with different apps open at the same time with 1GB RAM. So, you will have to work on only one thing at a time preferably. Never had any problems with that though.

Few tabs in the browser was also no problem.

Unfortunately you cannot increase RAM on tablets on your own. It is the same that it originally comes with.

opaninkofi

That is NOT price fixing. U can't offer sales (reduced price) on a branded product without the knowledge of the producer/owner of that product. It 's a basic supply chain concept acceptable the world all over.

You can download the Google Play Store APK off the Net on your PC or something?.

Then copy it across to a Micro SD Card (via a relevant USB-enabled Micro SD Card Adaptor, etc?).

Then put that same Micro SD Card in the Amazon Tablet.

Then via the Tablet's relevant 'File Manager ', locate the Play Store APK on your Micro SD Card via the Tablet.

Then install it?.

Then, Bob's your Uncle ..... hehehe. :-)

Price is great. Tablet is great. Free Amazon apps are great. But Amazon support can be ridiculous. If you give this tablet as a gift, Amazon will expect them to return the tablet if it breaks. They also expect them to have a credit card on their account before they'll ship a replacement. They won't allow the purchaser to return the tablet. Arguing about Amazon's obligation to offer warranty to the purchaser will result in Amazon hanging up on you!
Nujol to hat_ok_dear
19 Mar 17 #76
I had a shock when I bought one as a gift - with no pre-warning Amazon automatically linked it to my Amazon account and allowed purchases on it authorised to my account from the get-go. Apparently their standard practice if bought directly from Amazon! Had to actively remove it as an authorised device via a rather circuitous route, after seeing a number of purchase emails appear one after the other for apps the person it was given to was buying/downloading. They did sort it out, refund etc. and pointed out I should have ticked the "it's a gift" option when ordering - but who does that?? - I assumed that was for having it gift-wrapped.

Anyway - this is from Argos so won't be an issue . Thanks OP.

I got one of these in 2012 and the charging port was quite delicate. Apparently it was a common problem back then. Is it still an issue?

Also, if you can't root it, does that mean you can't install a custom ROM. That would be a shame, as I think you can't install Google Play any more, which limits some of the appeal.

Depends on how your Manga is to be then read?.

If all your Manga is purely read 'online'?, then 8GB, or 16GB is of minor consequence?.

IF however, your Manga is to be rather read 'locally'?, then .....

Don't bother with the 8GB again, and stick to the 16GB instead basically? (as the 'Graphic RICH' content of some of those Manga eBooks can be voluminous in every sense of the word!, from 100's of pages deep per 1, to 100's of MB's in size per 1 too! .. and after Amazon's Fire OS has taken it's fair share of space on the Device, your NOT going to have a whole heap of change left from only 8GB?, trust me on that ..... UNLESS ofcourse, you do like what I would rather do, put alllllll such eBooks onto an SD Card instead, then place that within the Tablet instead, etc?, and/or blatantly rather go for the 16GB one as it is?).

That's how I would do it anyway ...

So, you need to know how your going to use your stuff basically?. :-)

This is a bargain device at this price, I've had one for 2 months at this price. Heat Added!!

2 potentially negative things worth noting:

ROOTING: It is no longer possible to root this device software (Mine is version 5.3.2.1). If that's what you intend to do to make this a fully functional android device, you can't.

SD CARD: while expandability by SD card is very useful for all Amazon content, it's not possible for most apps to write to the SD card. App Permissions within the apps dont allow it and can't be changed without it being rooted. (see above)

For example Onedrive, Netflix, iPlayer, YouTube, any app where you might want to use the SD card can only download to the device's internal memory.

With 16GB version this probs won't matter as all Amazon content will go on SD card.

8Gb version is in fact 6Gb to start with and after installing Google services and only the most essential apps I need I'm left with 1Gb to play with. Not enough!

Some apps can be partially (around 10-50% usually) moved to the card to save some internal memory.

Essentially this device is a shop-front for Amazon which is brilliant if you subscribe to prime, but not so much if you wish to consume your own content.

Until rooting becomes possible!

I hope this helps someone!

Ahhhhhhhh yes!, I REMEMBER that one!, WOW!, it was like just over 10 years back? (if I recall well?), and that 'spat' was HUGE!!.

LEVI (unlike TESCO at the time ... ) were more intent on serving up their own 'interests', more so than not, and .....

It was in all the Media at the time.

It became an unfortunate Consumer faux-par ...

Yep!, the OP's above Tablet would be perfect for alllll that! .. via the pre-installed Amazon Underground App (Amazon's 'equivalent' to Google's Android Play Store, etc?).

You also tend to forget, Amazon were one of the earlierish innovators of the eBook Market?, with their Amazon Kindle Tablet some years back, etc, etc?.

I below Sony's own excessively over-price £250+ eBook Reader (Chinese Markets aside ... ) were the only one's that 'opened' this Market first, etc? (and everyone else that followed, became everyone else that also followed?, lol). :-)

And the rest as they say, is History ..... lol.

As far as i have used the tablet, the only place where Amazon has advertising is on the lock screen and apart from that nowhere else. If you have advertising elsewhere, its because of the apps you have downloaded from the store and nothing to do with the tablet as such.

Great tab for the price, i got one cheaper when i was in my time machine next week and with the official cover they had at the time. Makes a very solid package if traveling around reassuringly chunky and solid enough to through in a bag, etc, unlike high end tablets.

I had a tablet with a 16:9 display in a 16:10 resolution, and even for casual use I was not ok with the distortion. And kind of picture, person, circle, it all looked off (well, it was off). So I think the display is the main weakness. (And at this price, maybe that is ok?)

Had one for the best part of a year, and I'm surprised how good it's been. Yes it's a bit laggy as mentioned, and the battery is pony, but I use it daily and now considering buying a second for when the other's charging (which is often!). The Amazon gumpf doesn't really get in the way, and have put chrome on it as their browser is....best binned. Cheers OP!

Just to make something clear, like most tablets this tablet does not have 4G, it is wifi-only.

in this case, Amazon says so. The retailers agree to the terms under which they can sell there products. If they don't follow the terms, they longer get supplied with the products. It's that simple. Apple, Sky and many other manufacturer's do the same.
kay1992
19 Mar 17 1 #24
Says who? Once retailers buy their products from wholesalers and manufacturers they can sell them at any price they want, throw them in the river if they wanted. It's no longer Amazon's responsibility. They've already got their money.

actually NO they won't. Products like Amazon can only be sold at the price that Amazon tell them to sell at.

Ooh...these are awesome last time i got them. I got the 16GB but eve the 8GB is sufficient for basic use. It works great as a daily tablet and especially in the Kitchen to play songs, watch videos and stream from Prime if you have subscribed to it.

Great little tablet. Very HOT for the price.
kay1992 to abhijitdash123
19 Mar 17 #21
The answer is simple. Don't buy it as it was lower before so retailers will have to lower the price at some point.
abhijitdash123
19 Mar 17 24 #19
Do you realise that how many times it has been the lowest price of £29.99 in the last 2 years - ONCE!!!!

And if you are smart and wanna wait for that to come again, very well, you can wait while the others who are going to use it can get it for the next lowest price of £34.99 which is absolutely great and is a perfect price for this tablet. And don't forget that you get this specifications for the tablet only because it is hugely subsidised

I've been using one for the last month while I am away with work, paid £35 and its brilliant for the money.

Yeh there's a bit of lag when opening apps but it's fine for browsing, facebook and watching videos.

I haven't played any games on it but read some online reviews and apparently its more than capable for the standard stuff.

I'll be giving it to my 2 year old to use when I get home as the Amazon kids mode is really good, there's a free and paid for version.
