*** You should see the above message on the product page if you are eligible. Make sure you're signed in! ***

There's no indication of the eligibility criteria. I can confirm I am a Prime member but not an Amazon Music Unlimited customer. I have also purchased an Echo in the past and streamed some free music from Amazon Prime Music.

I apologise for wasting your time if you're not eligible! Thanks for looking, and hopefully you'll be invited in the future.

Item description

Amazon Echo is a hands-free speaker you control with your voice. Echo connects to the Alexa Voice Service to play music, provide information, news, sports scores, weather and more. Prime members can also ask Alexa to order eligible products they've ordered before and many Prime products. All you have to do is ask.

Echo has seven microphones and beam-forming technology so it can hear you from across the room—even in noisy environments or while playing music. Echo is also an expertly tuned speaker that can fill any room with 360° immersive sound. When you want to use Echo, just say the wake word "Alexa" and Echo responds. If you have more than one Echo or Echo Dot, Alexa responds intelligently from the device you're closest to with ESP (Echo Spatial Perception).

I was keen to try an Echo back in October, but wasn't sure if it was worth it. I decided to dip my toe in the water and buy the cheaper Echo Dot. I do enjoy using it as it is so convenient. Sometimes I have it in the bedroom and sometimes in the kitchen. I ask it to play music or the radio (it's OK even with the tiny Dot speaker), ask for a news summary, ask about the weather at the weekend or in a different location, to do a calculation, general knowledge questions, ask for a random fact or a joke, the definitions or spellings of words, when and where a certain film is showing nearby, set an alarm, ask what the time is during the night, set a timer for cooking, switch the bedroom Hue light off or dim it, etc. I haven't used it much for controlling the heating system, adding items to shopping lists, to do lists, 7 minute HIIT exercises, rolling a dice for board games, for the nearest coffee shop or Indian restaurant, etc., all of which Alexa is capable of answering. Alexa will listen to you and respond much more of the time than family members do!

I wouldn't go for any of the 'old school' manufacturers (Sony, Panasonic, etc) that try to invent something new, they will always fail. Samsung went down the route of buying a company that specialised in this and had an active development community (i.e. SmartThings) and re-branded... Still a bit risky as they could reclassify as non-core business if it doesn't take off, but at least it is being run pretty much as a standalone entity.

I have LightwaveRF ("LWRF"); you'll soon realise the limitation of the one-way 433Mhz protocol and lack of integrations. I wanted something (which I believe to be) really simple; the ability to receive a notification to my phone when a door sensor triggered... Not possible. The LWRF hub can only control LWRF stuff, which is limited and also quite expensive. The quality of their fittings (wall sockets/switches) however are second to none.

I think LWRF will have a future in this space, but they're a very small outfit (like 10 people or so) so will need to specialise heavily. If you read their PLC updates, they are also trying to focus on the commercial building market, so I imagine they may choose that as their niche and just keep the residential side 'ticking over'.

Cheers pal I'll have a look at the SmartThings , I was reading reviews on Amazon with panasonic smart devices but they didn't seem great tbh...
one's I'm tempted with so far are lightwaverf wall sockets as I bet the plug in smart plugs stick out quite far which isn't great when you have furniture in front of them.
jazlabs

There really isn't one company. However, I would say that SmartThings is the best "aggregator" smart home tech as they not only have their own devices, they integrate with almost everything else too. With SmartThings you can therefore control pretty much everything from a single app. Since it uses standard wireless protocols (ZigBee and Z-Wave), it also supports many standard smart devices available cheaply. It integrates with Philips Hue (hub to hub) so whilst it doesn't necessarily get around having multiple hubs, it does get around the pain point of having multiple apps to control different devices.

This sort of issue is meant to be resolvable through something like Apple HomeKit, but the reality is that many of the device manufacturers don't want to hand over control to Apple, or pay them to get certified... So its probably never going to take off.

What's everyone's preference in suitable smart tech for the home to go with these?
I'm after the usual plugs, lights, thermostat but like the look of motion sensors etc....
I don't suppose there's one company that does all these instead of having to get all separate like Philips hue, nest, wemo etc
cheers

Nah, they won't link the specific item to the order. I'd do exactly as you say, just order the new one and send it back using the old order. It may be worth getting on Amazon Live Chat first though and tell them you've got this offer, you've not yet opened your original one (white lie), and to save the hassle of re-purchase and returning, will they refund £20 off your original order.

I don't deny that it could be exploited, but I don't think there is any intent there. I'd expect Amazon's web services to be amongst the best for protecting against hackers, and would unlikely go unnoticed. IoT certainly brings new privacy and security risks, so its about choosing the most reliable/responsible platforms and weighing up the risk. For example, there's no way I'd use locks on my doors that can be unlocked remotely, but if a hacker works out how to turn my lights on and off, well that's bad, but not exactly something that would keep me up at night - except maybe from my bedroom lights turning on!

Ahh the perfect spy in the home. Although heavily denied the multiple microphones make the perfect private listening device if Amazon (or hackers) were that way inclined.
You wouldn't leave a webcam or Microphone connected to your PC all day for people to listen in however people seen quiet happy to leave this connected 24/7.

I would just say that I own both the dot and the full version echo. The full version echo picks up my voice a lot more easily, whereas I have to shout more at the Dot to get it to mute the music or hear me at all. It's not something you'd notice unless you had both I don't think.

I think you are taking it personally. I saw the deal before you posted it. it's ok if you want speaker all in one.

the anker is more than enough for me. its currently £30 but I got it cheaper. blasting music disturbing the neighbourhood is not my thing.

in fact the dot and the speaker cost me £50.

I got the dot cheaper than 50. anyway say 50 plus 20 anker speaker. that's 70.

also Bluetooth speaker can be taken to another room whilst still connected.

I've owned an Echo Dot for a few months now. My opinion is that it's very basic in terms of what you can ask it. I'm sure Google Home would thrash it, but that's not available other than in the USA. You can ask relatively simple questions and the Echo has no clue of an answer. I use it to add appointments to my schedule, and ask the time/weather, but not much else. It could also be useful for home automation. I only paid £39 for the Echo Dot so for that money it was OK.

6 Mar 17 #69
I have a Dot connected to my amp and speakers and find the prime music (no additional cost 2 million songs ) ample. Play some 70's rock or on Sunday morning wife asked for relaxing music and it played 5 hours of MOR classics.
So I love my Dot. But got it for £35 and don't think the full Echo justifies the price difference of £100 (normally)
jazlabs
6 Mar 17 #68
Worth a punt, but since they have a range of products (Dot, Echo, Tap probably coming), I don't they don't have much reason to lower the Echo back to £99. Definitely wouldn't expect anything until/unless the pound strengthens.

I have returned this and I am sure a lot of the guys here echo the same as well/ keep it to use it as a speaker once you ran out the window to return it. As many, I and my 7 year old son were very excited to buy this for the initial prime offer of £99. It has a lot of muscle with no brain on it( Good hardware with very poorly supported software). Nothing against OP and I have not voted hot or cold here.
Oneday77
6 Mar 17 1 #66
I'm in the market for an Echo. I bought a Dot for £35 a few weeks ago and see the value of it.
However I won't buy until £99.99 is the asking price again. Though I will vote this hot.

Amazon have multiple promotions on their own kit through the year. If you wait long enough some repeat. My initial Fire TV was £50 at launch, while I don't think it hit that again, it did hit £55 a few times. They want market share and will do more deals again, I'm prepared to be a little less trigger happy this time.
jazlabs
6 Mar 17 #65
No, the going price is £149.99. You were lucky (like me) to get the launch deal of £99, chances of seeing that price again are tiny. Regarding Amazon Music, I'm not really sure what's greedy about it. You can pay £3.99 to allow streaming to a single device, OR you can pay £7.99pm (or £79pa) to have it available on all devices. Elsewhere (e.g. Apple Music) you pay £9.99pm for the full music service. Seems reasonable to me. £3.99pm option is just for the single Echo owners that just want a straightforward way of playing any music on it.

Gimmick - had one since xmas. The standard Prime Music is useless. You'd expect with over 2 million songs that it would have pretty much most of the songs you request...not so (unless all you listen too is maybe recent chart stuff). Also, unbelievably, the volume isn't leveled on songs..so some old songs (which are probably taken from an older un-remastered source) sound much quieter than more recent songs. It sometimes plays a live version of the song you request..obviously taken from a live album.

As for HiFi? Well, no, of course it's not. It's small and light for a start, so it's never going to fill a room with good stereo sound. The sound from it is average..slightly worse than a £100 Sony docking station I have.

BUT, if all you want is a simple, space-saving, radio-quality music source in the kitchen then it might fit the bill. Just check first on Amazon Prime to see if it has the music you want to listen to or else you'll have to pay the music subscription on top.

Oh..and if you're likely to be committing any murders or plotting some seriously bad deeds in the kitchen then remember to switch it off at the wall socket first :stuck_out_tongue:

6 Mar 17 1 #61
The £3.99 option allows you to stream to 1 device at a time, not 1 fixed device. Seems reasonable to me, you can pay more should you wish to stream to multiple devices simultaneously.

Isn't this the going price anyway? Bought mine for £99 on first release and now have two dots too.Great for playing music when entertaining or just used as an alarm clock radio with extras. Can't wait for Google to get their act together and start shipping over here as I think it will be able to answer more questions. Had a deal emailed to me the other day which really annoyed me "Want more choice? Get access to up to 40 million songs from just £3.99/month on a single Echo device". So the reward for me purchasing 3 devices is they want me to pay for apps individually, GREEDY is what I call that. Come on Google get your act together, Amazon are not impressing me with development and support, I'm ready to move.
jazlabs
6 Mar 17 #57
I see your point, but the only problem is you not getting past the fact you 'saw' it at that price. There are so many things you will buy, every day, which will have been cheaper (sometimes significantly) but you never knew it and you wouldn't think twice. An alternative view is to consider; this year the pound could crash even further (we are Brexiting after all), Amazon are forced to inflate prices of their products by 20%... If you'd had bought this at £129.99 now, verses a new price of £179.99 you'd think this was an absolute steal! ... I'm just making conversation

Maybe it's popular as it's not a gimmick to others. My 96yo gran uses hers to listen to music(mainly) which she couldn't do otherwise having very little remaining eyesight. Our dot is in daily use and while I understand the gimmick/lazy comments I read, I'm sure no one would stop using their TV remote for fear of being referred to as lazy.

6 Mar 17 #54
Echo just acts as a Dot and Bluetooth speaker. The point is; if you want to play music via Amazon Music, or use Bluetooth audio then you'd buy an Echo. Even if you already own a Bluetooth speaker, it's still less 'clunky' than having a Dot and pairing to a separate Bluetooth speaker. There are certainly more use cases for the Dot, but the deciding factor is whether you care about the audio quality (for music, or just in general).

I use Alexa (via Echo) on a daily basis and whilst I admit it doesn't always get things right, as far as voice recognition technologies go, it's very good. I imagine things such as strong local accents or mumbled speech could negatively affect the performance, I have a fairly 'generic' accent and automatically speak slower and clearer when talking to Alexa. Alexa also sounds very 'human' in her speech, this is extremely noticeable when you compare with Siri. I think the app could definitely do with a bit of polish, and some of the skills are, well, awful! Including the National Rail Enquiries one (unless they've updated recently). But, in today's technology age, you have to launch things as soon as you can to get ahead of the game... The polish can (hopefully) come later. When this launched in the States, they didn't even have 3rd party Skills!

They might be trying to sell these off before they introduce the Amazon Tap to the UK, initially you had to tap it but they have introduced a handsfree / none tap functionality like the Dot and Echo

I don't think the Tap is designed to replace the Echo though, both products are still retailing in the US. The Tap is battery powered so I imagine won't have the same audio power output (source needed). Also, enabling the hands-free (no tap) option is going to drain your battery much faster.

Currently using an echo dot to control TV (via harmony) and a yeelight. Kodi control is still under deveopment but the Plex stuff is pretty cool, if a bit hit and miss. If you like gadgets and tech its a great plaything.
If you google a bit, you'll see the consensus is usually to save the £80 by buying a dot, and invest in a better quality bluetooth speaker. I send my dot output to my trusty old ysp 1000 soundbar using a 99p bluetooth adapter on my PC!

Agreed! I do think the full Echo is probably more useful in a kitchen or small bedroom but I own two dots and have each paired to several good Bluetooth speakers as their Bluetooth range is superb (one in the bathroom quite far away works perfectly!) shame the full Echo doesn't have the same features or stereo speakers! It sounds fine but not good enough for me!

Wow, people on here are mean! Heat diminishing faster than it's growing at the moment.
Guess it can be frustrating when you're not eligible for a deal.
Sorry folks!:disappointed:

Is it worth buying? Looked, before but not sure as I don't know anyone with one. Sound quality? And does anyone really use the voice activated stuff?

Hi. I'd say it is definitely a tech 'gimmick' with some genuine uses. Since I have quite a lot of connected devices (Philips Hue, SmartThings, Logitech Harmony, Nest) we actually use it a lot to control these things. We also use the 'shopping list' functionality to keep a household shopping list (synced to Todoist). Timer is also used a lot in our house. The sound quality is actually very good, even though I have a mid-range AVR system in the same room, the Mrs is happy asking Alexa to play music instead as its more convenient. I'm sure more useful Skills will also come in the future.

MMM.. tempted, I have the offer on checking my account, reviews are pretty good, the only smart technology in my house is the tv, have a smart meter but not hive.
Will take the dog for a walk and think about it, and probably ask my wife later. Online reviews are good.

I think a key decision point on this is whether you think you will use it to play music through. If you just want voice control, or a new 'gadget' then the Dot is the much cheaper option. If you were thinking at all about getting a Bluetooth speaker, then this would definitely be a much better (dare I say "future ready"?) way to spend your money.

Very true, but I think what I mean is that I could happily (and easily) control things without voice control, but there's something satisfying about asking our "PA", Alexa, to do it for us!

I have the same ad on the bar so assume it works for me

Doesn't work on the dot. I've no need for an echo though

so like most eBay supposed deals, account specific. So not a deal
jazlabs to northwales
6 Mar 17 2 #7
Wrong. It's a deal... to those that it applies to.
Unfortunately I have no way to determine how many people will be eligible, so should I not post the deal because of this? Potentially making some eligible people miss out.
I'm sorry if you can't get the deal. If you can post some information about your Amazon status, perhaps it could help me determine criteria and update the descriptions. E.g. Are you a Prime member? Have you ever used Amazon Music?
I did also put "For Select Customers" in the title to ensure there was no confusion about this fact.

Agree, I'm after a Dot too! Already have an Echo from the original launch offer, don't need another one.
