Just a warning I guess.
I've had a couple of products from Alcatel and every one of them has been the most cheap feeling crap I've ever used, especially the pixi 3 phone - it was so light it felt completely hollow, the removable back barely had enough grip to clip to the rest of the device, it also creaked like mad and the screen didn't even feel like glass, the touch on it was so awful at picking up presses that it was almost like using a resistive touch screen.
You'd be better served getting a used Nexus 7 or something akin to the Asus memo pad, far better built products than whatever... this is.

And different price bands is exactly why some people buy a Ford Fiesta and others buy Lambos .
This is a perfectly adequate tablet for kicking with around on the sofa. Browsing the web doesn't need a 12 core CPU and 8GB of RAM .

I think anyone looking at 'tablets' in this price range essentially need to accept that they are not truly in a position to own a tablet just yet.
We all have limits based on our financial position, there are things I would like but have to accept I cannot afford, though obviously I'm thinking more along the lines of a Ferrari

Poorer quality screen, worse CPU and less RAM than the Nexus 2013.

I'm waiting for 2gb ram in this price range. 1gb is simply not enough.

Depends what you use it for i guess
It's a decent price range for a 16GB plus £15 voucher which can also offset the cost, if you want to sell on of course.

If you ignore the £15 play credit I recommend the BEISTA Quad Core 9.6 on amazon.
2gb ram, 800p, 16gb storage, micro sd card support, fits a sim card, great battery.
I have no problems 2 months in and it was fulfilled by amazon so they cover warranty etc.

Are these specs better than a Nexus 7 2013?

Couldn't agree more regarding the CPU and RAM, but what about a great screen, useful speakers and something that actually feels nice to hold and use.

And also that if all you're used to is low-end but perfectly serviceable tablets like this, without having a comparison point you don't really miss what you don't know. Like when people say 'oh with 1080p, you don't know what you're missing on 4K', well, no I don't as I don't have 4K to miss it (we do have 4K TVs but nothing that outputs 4K to it)!

These are pretty slow (I have the 4G variant of this) certianlly not something I'd usually bother with (In my case it was to get a cheap data sim rather than for the tablet itself)

What should I replace my first generation Google Nexus 7" with as it has just died. I used it for youtube, browsing and streaming kodi and showbox to my TV via chromecast.
Same comparison between a Fiesta and Lambo apply. Lambo looks nice, sounds nice, but a Fiesta will still get you from a-b, if that's all your budget can afford.
Saying people shouldn't have a tablet because they can't afford an iPad is like saying people shouldn't buy a car because they can't afford a lambo. Absurd.

I never suggested an iPad, there are plenty of mid-range tablets out there, but these £50-£60 things, and those horrible £35 Amazon ones are just useless.

Possibly. My son's second birthday is coming up and I'd like to buy him a tablet, for watching cartoons in the car and playing some games to develop his mind. However I'd also like to use it when he isn't and I can't bear the thought of using a 1gb RAM tablet. So I'm in a position where I don't want to spend a lot due to my light use of it but also need something which is going to be 2gb at least. If the £100 Linx 10 with keyboard made a comeback I'd be on to that. if also prefer Windows. I'll just use my phone if I want Android, which incidentally has 4gb ram.

Yeah thanks for the advice bro but I think you're all over the place here with your assumptions. I think you just have to accept that you're not truly in a position to comment on a person's financial situation when you have no idea.
My financial means to own a tablet are fine. However as normal people do, they set a budget based on their usage and requirements for the product they wish to purchase.
I suggest keeping your mouth shut in future before jumping in head first when you clearly haven't a clue. Another one of life's idiots who just can't see or hear something without having to comment on it with limited information to go on, who end up looking like a fool. Well done, I hope you feel better now that you got your comment in. Keep your bucket shut next time and maybe somebody will mistake you for something other than an idiot, without you removing that doubt by opening it.

Yeah, Windows would run great on that, why do people waste money on Surface Pro's?

Just to add, I had one of these briefly, tried to load VLC Player onto it and it just did not have the memory to run it.
Luckily I got it free and since sold it

VLC will DEFINATELY run on a 1Gb device so what you just said was "I filled-up the memory with Apps and it was therefore full" which is kinda obvious and kinda solvable at the same time???

Probably because they don't set a budget and like you have money to burn so just buy the best, regardless of what usage they have for it. Like when you bought an £80 ancient graphics card.

Haha, I don't know if you read that thread properly but I'm genuinely not a gamer, I was just building a system for fun and to get rid of some bits I had kicking around. All of my own machines are Macs, about £7000 worth at today's prices, and I have an iPad Pro.
tommy6000009
10 Mar 171#29
Exactly my point. You weren't going to go spend £500 on a graphics card as you set a budget with the usage requirements you have. It doesn't make you a pauper begging on the streets for bread.

Deep sarcasm aside, your question remains valid.
The answer is "Atom devices are hard-limited to 2Gb so that companies can gouge for devices which have enough memory to work properly" - the Surface/Pro line is overpriced in a way that makes Macbooks look like bargains ;0
