Came across some great deals with Virgin Holidays (and Atlantic) whilst searching for deals to Vegas in August/September. I ended up booking 5 nights in The Cosmopolitan with flights for £768pp as that is an amazing hotel however I saw other hotels available from £414 including direct flights when i booked.

Yes it is very hot they still use Fahrenheit I was there one summer it was 99 degrees F at midnight. The heat is very dry though so does not feel as uncomfortable as higher humidity regions. Virtually all buildings are air conditioned.

Nearly booked the Luxor then noticed in the small print that when you get there, they charge you $30 per night extra... Making it another $150 of sneaky money.

Couldn't see an option to make it 7 days. Saw the ability to tweak flights, but could only see one for +1 days time and that was $1,300 extra.

Most hotels charge a "resort fee"

Didn't see that as an explicit option on the Virgin site. May ask for it when we get there, as Virgin do state on their website that you will be upgraded subject to availability.

On the website the cheapest Fountain view was an extra ~£300, but it should be cheaper to upgrade on the day. Do a bit of research on the rooms there before asking though. I booked a Terrace suite there once and on arrival they tried 'upgrading' me to the (in my opinion) inferior wraparound suite for an extra $30 pn.

what is a resort fee?
drasim to shoeaddict2310

Most hotels in Vegas charge a resort fee usually in the region of $30 a night to cover wifi, gym access and sometimes vouchers. Usually the ones that don't are timeshares or linked to them i.e. Marriotts Grand Chateau and Casino Royale.
Treasure Island can often be booked with optional resort fee, although you'll pay for Wifi per device.

VERY hot in late August. Cheap as Americans find it much too hot. April /May will be twice these prices. Good value if you can stand the heat!!

Went last year for the first time and just booked flights to go again this year! Usually I'm not a fan of hot places but Vegas was a great heat, I loved it immediately whereas my girlfriend who loves the heat took a day or two to get adjusted to it. This was in June though, at 40°, not sure how hot it is in August. Would highly recommend it to anyone who's up for a good time. 5 nights really isn't enough though, we went ten days and still didn't get to do everything we wanted too due to stopping at every place we went into for a bit of gambling and drinks

Don't forget to play myvegas on Facebook, some people say it's not worth it but we thought it was - got $50 drinks voucher in New York New York, buy one get one free breakfast buffet in Monte Carlo and buy one get one free monorail pass.
There's a book on Amazon for about £15 that has a bunch of coupons in the back for various things; food outlets, bars, casinos etc that's well worth the cost of the book.
Also use GroupOn as there's some fantastic deals on there, particularly for dining out.
I know that time of year it'll be hot but good/comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended!
Hunting for all the deals above meant I could spend more on big ticket items like a helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon and have a few cars round the track at Exotic Racing!

Resort fees are very common in the US/Mexico/Caribbean to cover leisure facilities. Five days is the right amount of time to do Vegas if you're not going to travel too far out of town and concentrate pretty much on the strip and canyon areas.

Vegas is an experience, but I feel now everything is aimed at separating you from your money one way or another. I'd recommend anyone to go see the Hoover dam people and take a walk on the new Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge pedestrian footway - the bridge bypasses thru traffic from the dam now. A great view of the dam from above, ideal for photos, the next best thing to an aerial photo. BTW if you get married in Vegas, you're married everywhere!!!

At most hotels the resort fee is mandatory.

We spent 14 days based in Vegas in late August/early September 2015 and could easily have stayed longer. But we didn't stay in Vegas all the time, we had a car and also drove to the Grand Canyon, Los Angeles, Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, Mount Charleston, Red Rock Canyon. Don't think I'd want to be on the Strip all day and night for a week, but we loved staying in Vegas as a base and are keen to return back soon.

As for these deals, I don't find them that great as the really good hotels (e.g. Palazzo) are coming in at £3k for 2 people for a week. When we went for 2 weeks I booked the flights and hotel separately, stayed at Palazzo, paid around £2800 for both and the flights gave us the chance to visit Niagara Falls on the outward stopover. For me, if I'm going to go that far, I like a 6-10 hour stopover both ways to get a chance to spend time in another city.

Really?
steve23094
5 Mar 17 1 #42
No, it's mandatory. It was on Rip-off Britain recently. The problem is that a lot of travel websites bury the cost somewhere in the terms and conditions or don't make it explicitly clear when paying.

The reality is that if it's mandatory anyway then it should be included in the headline cost of the holiday. But these companies have been dodgy for years with add-on fees in an attempt to have an advertised price as low as possible.

Please be aware that taxes and fuel surcharge may still added, which can amount to a few hundred squids. Don't be tempted by apparently cheap flight deals, I've been stung with Ryanair and easyjet before on their penny deals..

5 Mar 17 #50
Its clearly not a joke. If you click through the deals, you will find this written in small print. On the first page it mentions somethjng called 'resort fees' - there is no mention of this in statement. I'm not sure what this is, but sound expensive..

With Kind regards
vialli25
5 Mar 17 #51
Right, but what you wrote makes it sound like Virgin are going to slap another few hundred quid onto these prices which is untrue. The prices you see on the Virgin site, are the prices you pay. It is a package holiday deal. you can't compare this with 1p flights from budget airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet.

Resort fees are something lots of US hotels charge as has been discussed in this thread. Nothing to do with Virgin themselves and certainly not exclusive to this deal. You'd have to pay them no matter who you book through and are payable directly to the hotels. They're usually around $20-$30 per room per night. Not an insignificant amount of money sure, but not hundreds of pounds of hidden fees either like you make it sound.

The 'cheap 'deals are there are such, but I haven't seen a top hotel like Palazzo for less than £1000 each for a week on any dates, which is very much a standard price for a combined flight/hotel package with the likes of Virgin, BA etc.

The cheap accommodation like Circus Circus etc. fine if you intend to spend minimal time in your hotel room and don't care how awful your accommodation is ("chavtasic" nicely sums it up), not for me but each to their own.

I agree. 5 days is a very short stay for a flight time of 10.5 hrs but I'm not sure I would want to spend the whole two weeks or more in Vegas unless it was a first time visit maybe. A few days in San Francisco and/or LA in the middle (internal flights are cheap) or trips to the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Death valley, National Parks etc. are options. As for resort fees, it is what it is. Hotels use them to claw more money out of the tourists and have been doing it for a few years now since MGM started it (back in 2009 I think) to help with their huge debts at the time. They all do it now and the situation is unlikely to change anytime soon either. Also, remember that the 8 hour behind UK time difference might mess up your sleep pattern for a 5 day trip unless you can get some sleep on the plane out, though as Las Vegas is open 24x7 you might feel you don't need to adjust quite as much as you would for a different trip.

The $20 dollar trick is when you bat your eyelashes at the checkin desk operator and slip them a 20 dollar note whilst asking them if there's any chance of an upgrade on the room. Worked for me at The Bellagio a few years ago, got an amazing fountain view room in one of the towers

Thomas Cook do flights for about £200 each way if booked in advance (includes baggage but not seat reservations) and hotels, even decent ones, can be less than $50 a night if there isn't any major event on. Well worth a visit.

5 Mar 17 #78
I have just returned from my first trip there, stayed at the Bellagio too. We had two suites with unlimited access to the Chairman's Lounge, if you're able to get a room/suite with a fountain view you will not regret it.

I personally think that 7 days is ample, though it was broken up by taking in some shows, doing the helicopter tour for lunch at the Grand Canyon and visiting the Old Strip down by Freemont Street to do the zip wire.
