Miui 8 is actually really good. Some very useful features to it, and its very usable as a UI. The pull down notification / settings / buttons toggle is particularly good. Alot of support and regular updates to Miui as well from Xiaomi with loads of pre-release developer versions and a big user/support community. This is a company that's 'on the ball' in terms of their UI development.
So tempted, been eyeing it for a few days. Shame it doesn't have USB-C.

Brilliant specs for the price, BUT if you are willing to go for a lower tier brand such as ZUK (Lenovo) you can get a Snapdragon 820, 4GB and 64GB storage for the same price (or thereabouts)

The summing-up of the aforementioned PCAdvisor review says similar - "The Redmi Note 4 isn’t a huge upgrade over the Redmi Note 3 in terms of core hardware, with simply a greater amount of storage and a faster processor, but the design changes are a huge improvement over its predecessor. If you don’t care about looks and can make do with less storage then the cheaper Redmi Note 3 may well meet your needs."
So, depends if you must have the latest and greatest.

the pc advisor review is about the 64gb version not the 32gb version of this post otherwise phone is the same but more importantly they are comparing it to the redmi note 3 helio x10 processor model hence faster processor but the redmi note 3 snapdragon 650 processor model is at least the same or slightly faster here's a link to youtube video comparing the redmi note 4 to the redmi note 3 snapdragon 650 model https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIibCm1dYSk as you can see the snapdragon redmi note 3 is faster than the redmi note 4 helio x20

Yes, which can be had for 128 quid from Aliexpress. Have to say, after experiencing very poor GPS performance from a MTK chip (not the one in this though) in an Elephone P6000, I would go snapdragon every day of the week.

+1 on this. I am on my first. Xiaomi (redmi note 3 se) and though I have Nova premium I stick with Miui as it works and is clean. The downside is you cannot auto sort your apps which gets very frustrating. However in the last 5 months of ownership. Miui has been upgraded several times and so agree with Picard.

I now have an 18 month old K3 Note with the MTK chip and, with the latest MM ROM it locks on within 10-20 seconds from cold. Also now picks up all the Glonass signals as well (still not as good as my wife's Vibe Shot which is Snapdragon, though).

On a serious note (hah!) I ordered a Redmi for my father as gift because his Moto Razr broke last month. Yes, really, a V3i lol. He does have an android tablet though so he should be fine with that.
My only concern is with the auto light sensor again as the blurb points out on this, I read they can be a pain and constantly changing the screen on Miui7 (and you can't deactivate it) but I haven't checked if they have made it optional in Miui8. I guess it's a warning, I would find a solution rooting or something but if anyone has any further info that would be good.
swfarrington
9 Feb 17#44
Got the RN2 and I'm sure you can turn on/off the auto brightness. Although I've always left it on and never had a problem. Only issue with all of these phones is the camera which is sub par against the more 'traditional' manufacturers outside China. Generally OK in good light, but dismal if it's not.

The NHS should be giving these out instead of happy pills.
Rather posting tons of photos (which is unnecessary), you really ought to make it clear to people what the position is regarding the ROM supplied with the phone (or if you're unclear on the position), and if it's a 3rd party customised China ROM, that they'll need to bear in mind that they'll have to flash this ROM were they to buy this particular phone. Lots of people on here who have bought from BangGood have said that they received a dodgy customised version of the China developer ROM with no OTA updates etc.

As badboyofrock said, this deal doesn't have band 20, but some do. That PC Advisor review is incorrect as there are 4 Xiaomi phones which have "Global" versions that support band 20. These 4 phones. The Redmi Note 3 SE mentioned by Andybro, and Redmi 3S band 20 models have been posted on HUKD multiple times. Some HUKD members have bought and confirmed they work fine with O2/GiffGaff and Vodafone. This comment for example. Even the PC Advisor review for the Redmi Note 3 is wrong/outdated as it also says no band 20, when the Taiwan "Global" version does.

I try my utmost to make my posts as impartial and as informative as I can - but I have no obligation to "do" anything - surely an informed buyer researches before they purchase?
I have never bought a bona fide "Chinese" phone till recently (the Nubia Z7 Max, also Banggood) and was reassured to read from HUKDers and other buyers that the phone supplied works out the box with Google Play installed. So, my assumption (naive perhaps) is that all phones supplied by this vendor are similar. If I'm wrong, it's not my intention to mislead.
Rather than moaning, you could have spent that valuable time finding out about ROMs yourself - I am not always at home or able to spend ages searching the internet, with the best will in the world!
Picard123
10 Feb 17#55
Jeez. Nobody is saying that you're "under an obligation". What I'm saying is that your post doesn't help buyers at all, particularly those who don't know any better about this (which seems to include you!). You haven't even flagged up things that they should be wanting to clarify with the seller ie ROM version, returns etc
Less photo spam, and more useful information next time please.

I have no desire to learn about ROMs, but that doesn't mean I don't want people who purchase this phone to be well-informed.

nige182
10 Feb 172#57
I completely agree, I have always found your posts good and your comments informative and fair. Why should you have to learn the full details of something just because you are posting it? Let others do that if it doesn't interest you. I might find a good deal on a new car, doesn't mean I should be adding details about how easy it is to access the headlight bulbs for maintenance or what the best aftermarket stereo is for the car, or how to change the air conditioning condenser. If I post a washing machine deal should I say how easy/hard it is to change the bearings and where to get them from when they fail?
Not just that, but you probably posted before receiving it, how would you know the ROM version before you have held it in your hands anyway?
louiselouise
10 Feb 17#58

You'll need to give some more info.
Xiaomi Redmi phone brand is more price focused for the general consumer market, Mi brand use better spec components so are more expensive.
Screen size? Xiaomi phones have 5.0, 5.2, 5.5, and 6.44 inch screens, there's a 5.7 inch screen but I'm pretty sure that's only on the Mi5s plus which is outside your budget.
Screen size and battery size were my main criteria, so I went for the Mi Max - lot of phone for the money.
Anybody know a phone they could recommend which has NFC functionality and would work on Virgin 4g? My budget is £200 and would prefer 64gig storage. My dad has a Nexus 4 currently and needs an upgrade.
