This is the cheapest RX 480 4GB I can find (with custom cooling also) for anybody looking for a cheap 480 and doesn't want to spend £200 on the 8GB blower model that was posted here.

£169.99 via economy shipping (free), or you can pay for express services.

Not a bad price given the cost of the 470's and 1060's.

No. You don't even need to bother buying a GPU if you're editing video, CPU power is way more important and the built in Intel graphics are more than adequate. Unless you're in a professional environment buying a fancy GPU for video editing is pointless.

Really nice design IMO, nice view of heatpipes, backplate included and importantly a nice 8-pin power connection for voltage OC.

So many GFX cards coming down. Originally I was going to go for the 8GB version:

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/sapphire-amd-radeon-rx-480-8gb-graphics-card-199-99-amazon-2607595

then some people say this is better then the rx r480 8GB version

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/asus-rx470-strix-gaming-oc-4gb-novatech-for-159-98-delivered-2610214

I think some googling before I decided. Damn!

There's no free 3D technologies. If you want to play games in 3D you have to pay for tridef 3D. Nvidea has theirs bundled with the drivers. My only moan from moving to amd, the card is great

Great price, heat added. Only thing I would say is that 8gb cards make a difference at higher resolution gaming. Raises the debate of spending extra £20 or so to increase the longevity of your card if you ever plan on moving to a higher resolution monitor, or having a go with high res texture packs, like the recent fallout 4 one.

Just added some detail to the first post.

+Card is nice looking and has a backplate, good if you have it in view.
+8-pin power connector, to squeeze the life out of the card you can experiment with voltage (they have very good thermal protection so not very risky)
+Clip-off fans, perfect for cleaning the card, or replacing/upgrading the fans, they do LED fans also. I wish my Fury had this (swap) feature...
+Dual BIOS perfect for flashing or running different boost configs.
+VRM cooling, proper thermal pads and heat-sink.
+3 year warranty.

Shows how bonkers the prices of graphics cards are when there are 470's at a higher price!

My only concern with this card is that I've seen reviews which say that it runs hot and noisy.

Still at least prices are finally starting to come down. Heat given ;0)

Oh. And I would personally go for the 1050 rather than the Ti version. I think its far better value (although I agree with derp).
The_Hoff to jadamso

I can't any find many reviews of the 480 RS, but I did find this video.

Generally advice is to limit the fan speed in wattman to 2,600RPM in which case the card will run (hot, but within spec) at 70-80deg.

I should mention that the card should be completely silent (they spin down to 0RPM) when browsing and not gaming which is a nice benefit.

If you want the cream of the crop, the XFX GTR looks very handy indeed.

Why would you buy a 1050 just to watch youtube vids of cats?!
I'm guessing their 4350 worked fine for their needs before.
Have a look for a 4670 on ebay for a tenner or so or a 4550, 5450, otherwise yeah go for a 7750.
Just check that the mobo is definitely PCI, the 4000 series were the last I think to have AGP support, so even though its integrated it might well have a motherboard rocking an older slot.

Pixelation issue in my experience has been due to either overheating of the GPU, or a power supply issue. I'm guessing you've tried the old reinstall drivers routine. Maybe check that the heat sinks aren't covered in crap and are still held securely.

Two points to make about your plans :
1) Save yourself cash on that kaby lake i5 a and get a intel g4560 - myou'd save about £100.
See here - and this is with a rsx 470
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dichjs9HXTg&t=156s

2) Before you buy that skylake h110M motherboard, remember the motherboard bios will need to be flashed with the bios thats compatible with kaby lake processors. i.e. Make sure you have access to a skylake cpu or know a friend or a computer shop that can do this for you.

Is 4gb enough for 1440p? Also don't be shocked if you don't get one, ballicom don't have an accurate stock system.
The_Hoff
2 Feb 17 #55
1440p Minecraft/CSGO/Dots/WoW/e-sports, absolutely. 1440p Star Citizen/Forza Horizon 3, nope not without big quality compromises (low/low-medium settings).

Very hard to answer you accurately without knowing the games in question.

If I wanted to hit 50-70+ FPS in 1440p I'd be wanting the RX 480 GTR 8GB card or similar top spec card, or a Fury based card until the 490 materialises.

I'd be more confident throwing this card 1080p games and hitting decent frames. Though as above it's all game dependant.
The_Hoff
2 Feb 17 2 #56
Depends on the software used, but assuming it threads correctly I'd be wanting an i7 quad with HT, so 8 logical cores.

I do my drone footage on an i7 4770K (4790K even better) and that does it nicely.

Perhaps post something on an editing specific board, there will be a sub-reddit if you search http://www.reddit.com, ask for some recommendations.
V6ALFISTI
2 Feb 17 #57
Thanks, agreed. Certainly no requirement for anything more expensive/capable.

Power is a good quality xfx 450w unit and new drivers do nothing. I haven't checked the heat sinks though - good call.

Will look at those other cheaper cards you mention, because your right in saying the 4350 didn't cause an issue, however thought a little more grunt wouldn't be a bad thing.

The_Hoff
2 Feb 17 #59
More than sufficient in that case.
The_Hoff
2 Feb 17 #60
Run it through a Heaven benchmark cycle and see if you can force the issue to occur. Use something like HWmonitor or AIDA64 to monitor the fanspeeds and temps and see if you can correlate the numbers.

Assuming the fanspeeds are sufficient to cool it, it may be some cracked solder or something in the chip that only becomes apparent under certain conditions (I.e it's making a connection but not of sufficient quality).

Tried an air duster on the card to clear any dust?

In line with others, this is overkill. In my Htpc I have a 630GT low profile from years ago, fine for transcoding media and would cost you pennies now.
intercake
2 Feb 17 #61
I'd say a Nvidia GTX 560 Ti is around the best card you can get for your money in that price bracket, assuming you have room for a dual slot graphics card and have a PSU that can power it. There's the non-Ti version for £28+2.50PP on CEX at the moment. A Nvidia GTX 460 or ATI 5850 can be had for similar money, but the GTX 560 is a good chunk quicker. I'd recommend using http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php - sort in in rank order, then check ebay for sold prices and see what best fits your needs. If you're single slot or low profile then let me know and I'll have another quick look

I have the XFX GTR black edition which is the top of the pile - laptopsdirect circa £251 less the Which? trial subscription (was £20 discount, now £15). They still have the product numbers mixed up though (the standard GTR and black editions have the code swopped - I phoned up to highlight the issue) so I had to ensure I received a card with the correct product code - rx-480p8dba6. Topcashback wiped out the additional postage cost.

Umm... You suggestions entirely depend on the kind of games you play.

For example, even an heavily overclocked G4560 will bottleneck a RX 480 in CPU-heavy and open-world games like GTA V, Fallout 4, The Witcher 3. An i3 or i5 is a better pairing for an RX 480 in DX11 games at least.

When I spec machines for people I tend to build them with extra headroom in the CPU department, since you should upgrade your GPU every 3-5 years, but your CPU and the main platform for your rig every 5-8 years.
ollie87
2 Feb 17 3 #66
No. You don't even need to bother buying a GPU if you're editing video, CPU power is way more important and the built in Intel graphics are more than adequate. Unless you're in a professional environment buying a fancy GPU for video editing is pointless.

The guys budget is bigger than the budget builds that Im suggesting. And there isn't much real world difference when playing games between the g4560 and its vastly more expensive i5 or i3 especially in 1080p when pair with a RX470, RX480 or a gtx 1060 GB. Those vids I linked shows that.
Having said all this, my advice would be told hold out till march and wait for the Ryzen chips. More competition and hopefully this will drive better pricing and choise for customers.

RyZen will initially launch with the higher end i7 competing products I believe. May need to wait until Q3 for the lower end stuff.

I suspect much of the reasoning is the Xbox Scorpio is supposedly using the same chip which has been pretty much AMD's only profitable computing arm this generation.

If they missed supplying Ms there would be some very harsh ramifications I'd imagine.

I'm looking forward to seeing RyZen and Vega in action this year. Pending the performance I may upgrade my 4770k for one.

Different card.

The card I posted does run warm having read a number of YouTube comments, but it's well within spec.

Allegedly the best way to run it is with a 2600RPM fan limit set within the driver (using wattman) and even under stress it stays within temp specs whilst not being overly noisy - 3000RPM apparently is too loud for many.

Not sure if things have changed with drivers and new firmware from a heat perspective either, with ReLive you have options with the Chill feature and also some optimisation of the chipset.

This card uses the reference PCB which is why it runs warmer than a longer custom PCB like the one in the GTR.

That's what I did, and dude - totally worth it, as now I can play any of my games on ultra settings and it does make a big difference.
I got £80 for my 670 and I'm quite happy with it, because even though it is still reasonably powerful card, if you look on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUOrnp2PjK4 (I know it's 680 vs 1050ti, but unless I'm totally wrong, then 670 should score somewhere between 1050 and 1050ti). My point is GTX 1050 new only costs around £100, so I think my £80 for 670 was a fare deal.
So my suggestion is go for it, while you can still make a something from your 670! Good luck!

I also read that article, but nowhere does it confirm your claim.

Everything I have read up until this point has suggested that the top end chip will be on sale first and this is also true of Vega with their 1080 competing GPU landing first.

Of course it makes sense because they want benchmarks to sell the chip.

We'll see but I'm going to lean with the media and I'm expecting an i7ish product with varying amount cores.

Hello,

I'm interested in buying 2 of the RX 480 you have listed under quick code - 1288469 - can you tell me how many you actually have in stock? The reason being over the last 24 hours I've noticed the number go up/down/up/down, is this a real time stock level or is there some inaccuracy in that count?

Thank you.

----------------------------

Hi,

We receive a few a day and book them in accordingly. At the moment we have around 13 left.
We are expecting a further 9 more units today.

It goes down because people buy them. Don't forget we list on multiple marketplaces, not just our own website.
It goes up because we receive a delivery and book them in.

Kind Regards,
xxxxx

Looks like they hold limited stock of the item or perhaps dropship from their supplier. Little to worry about in any case but perhaps explains the deal you mentioned, if they takes more orders than their supplier can fulfil it's liable to happen.

Seem legit.

Was torn between waiting for another 8Gb deal but I rarely game anyway. This would be used for 1440p on my monitor for games as basic as xcom2 and on a steam link at 1080p for more arcade styles. Not entirely true. Some programs can levy a graphics card. However an extra £170 into the CPU choice (a nice i7 so an extra 4 threads to play with) would be the smarter choice if you don't wish to game. Not a bad system you've managed to put together though

You're both correct, but it depends on the requirements. CPU is without question imperative, but if he's dealing with 4K in h.265/HEVC and editing on the fly having GPU decoding will significantly reduce his labour times. I do mine in Power Director and have my GPU acceleration enabled - which needs a card of suitable means.

Lied about temps. Sorry, not intentionally! 69-73C that's on 1080p
Had an interesting experience though, wheres my PC would boot up with a black screen (no splash screen, nothing), so OK, I tried a few more times and the same thing. So I checked the HDMI cable and that worked fine.
At the end I decided to try it with the included Y adapter (2x6pin to 8pin), even though I do have an 8pin (6+2) on my PSU, PC booted fine and so far no problems. My PSU is DPS-600WB http://www.computer-store-berlin.de/ebay/bilder/69167---HP-DPS-600WB-A--633186-001-633186-002-600-Watt-Netzteil.JPG 600W but as I understand it is a multi rail PSU and I don't really understand the power distribution on the label, but I think that not enough amps were my problem... Anyhow, thought I'll share...

Check your BIOS settings. I'll guarantee if you plugged a VGA in to your onboard video card it would be booting for you.

Likely works via HDMI owing to CEC or something.

Change your BIOS to only output from PCIE.

Just spent ages trying to diagnose an issue where my monitor dies every time I put my windows password in. Swapped my HDMI for a DP, rewired the power to the graphics card, just wouldn't fix it. Was about to try my old graphics card when I noticed a small click from the plug socket, I have one of those energy saver things that shuts down peripherals when the main plug goes off and its decided now was a good time to break!

They cancelled my last order due to no stock, hence my previous warnings. They also sold grey imports of HP microservers that were ineligible for cashback, which again I was caught out in. Had a reply off XFX, it does nothing! Apparently they send them out regardless in case they retrospectively make an offer, so that cards already in the channel can be eligible.

Hey guys, need a new gpu as my HD7850 died recently. This looks like the best option but curious about the best alternatives around £150-170 with 4gb VRAM? And is worth considering a older gen gpu? I'm not a heavy gamer, mainly use my system for music but want to play games like W3 on Ultra at 1080P. I also have a 500w antec truepower plus PSU so would prefer a card that draws from the PCIe. Thanks!
The_Hoff
7 Feb 17 #148
To be honest, at this price there's not really a lot that will touch it, even a second hand 970/290 will fetch £140+ and once you factor in a 3 year warranty it's hard to argue against this 480. Of the last gen, really you only option is a 970 otherwise if you wanted those settings and lowish power, a 290/380/390 will use a lot of juice and whilst it will run happily on that PSU it's money for old rope.

Like most a 480 or 1060 is your best option and from a price perspective it's a 480 I think that makes most sense, all be it less efficient power wise.
teejuana
7 Feb 17 #149
Thanks. Yeah gotta think about the longevity of the card, just like to know the best options before making a decision and I'm well out of the loop! I'll check the other cards out, budgets a bit tight and I need a card asap. So Ballicom are reliable?

i got an rx 470 for 150 from amazon. so check best price for 470 as little differenence with 480 at 1080p ultra. i waa putting bids on ebay for old 290s but not prepared to pay more than 110 or 120 as at 140 150 better to get something new with warranty and hdmi 2.0 support. can't remember if older ones have frresysnc or not. oh and less power so more resellable in future as more pptential customers as large number of customers will have weaker psu
The_Hoff
8 Feb 17 2 #151
470 haven't really dropped their prices significantly versus the 480 deals, least not that I've seen. Given performance, price, resale I think the 480 is the better pick.

290 supports freesync just fine and is a solid card, but very thirsty. In the summer it is hard to keep temps down if you're running on its limit. The reason the costs are high is that card is still lauded by miners as it's very good cost/block rate.

Either way, plenty of good deals to be had

You need a good quality 450 watt plus psu to run an rx 480 with a pentium.
A CX 430 wont cut it, its a tier 4 low quality unit with cheap low temp capacitors.
The xfx ts 450 would be ideal if you can find one.

152 for rx 470 from same supplier. agree price on 480 is great but not seen it is much better for 1080p ultra gaming so I preferred to save the cost mainly as I am a geek ans was trying to get my gaming pc as cheap as possible as a project. Got a second hand dell t7500 with xeon quad core processor with hyperthreading and 1100w psu and 12gb of ram for around 150 so total cost around 300.

jameshothothot

teejuana
9 Feb 17 #162
First, why didn't I check and second, why didn't it show up with Google!? Nah, I went with the 480 for monitor support, I'm 1080 now but I plan to have 2, maybe 3 monitors in the future. I've really wanted to get a 27" monitor for a while and will run at higher resolution when I do so wanted a card equipped to handle some heavier use without drawing too much on system resources.

Anyway for an email from Ballicom today, order should be here Friday so free shipping is the way to go if you don't need it urgently.

11 Feb 17 2 #163
Just a heads up, i had a hell of a time getting it installed and working and turns out there's a lot of people having issues with the drivers, with mine the computer kept rebooting every time the installer ran, massive headache. The fix is here but you have to use an older driver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2PA2NGOc-A

It seems to be either that or fresh install of windows if you want to install the latest drivers. Really wish i'd checked around first but might save you some pain.

I just plugged it in, booted, downloaded the newest drivers from AMD and rebooted, no troubles.
The_Hoff
11 Feb 17 1 #165
What card were you coming from?

I would always recommend using DDU prior to installation of a new card and driver, link here.

You may have done this so apologies if I'm teaching the art of sucking eggs, but I also tend to do this even when moving from one version to another as a best practice.

Thanks for the info in any case.
teejuana
13 Feb 17 #166
HD7850. I didn't know of DDU but i do now! I had no end of issues since Friday with constant reboots and other issues which started as soon as the driver was installed, almost within a few seconds each time, absolutely fine with the basic display adapter.

Same issue is reported a lot on the amd forums so anyway i'm returning it. Shame cause there doesn't seem to be anything as good at that price and the price seems to have just gone back up.

GTX 1060 the next best thing? Still think my PSU might be a bottleneck though.
The_Hoff
13 Feb 17 #167
Just run DDU, reboot, install 17.1.2 drivers. No need to return the card before trying that, it sounds purely like a driver conflict.

If you only want 50-60 FPS @ 1080p and are happy to perhaps compromise settings in future, you could look to a 1050ti, otherwise pick up the 1060.
teejuana
13 Feb 17 #168
Meant i did, AMD utilities and all that. DISM, scannow etc. I can't even boot into windows though to try, just reboots after 30 seconds. PSU could be the issues but apparently a 1060 will be fine with mine, 400w minimum. Gonna try baking my HD7850 in the meantime...
The_Hoff
13 Feb 17 #169
So with onboard video and your old card it boots OK?

What are your specs (including drives) and what's the PSU you have in there?

Have you tried unplugging optical drives, removing all but 1 stick of RAM, unplugging all HDD apart from boot/OS drive?

That should tell you if you have a power issue.

Unplug the kettle lead and press and hold your power button for 15 seconds before you start messing with your board, just in case.

The_Hoff
13 Feb 17 #171
Contact them and state you're from HUKD (seriously) they might do you a deal. I messaged them and they're aware of the thread, I had some dialogue about the deal.

Otherwise if teejuana is returning his card, it may be worth PMing him to buy it for cost.

There's a few deals at £210 for 480 8GB and 1060 6GB otherwise.

I'll expire this.
teejuana
13 Feb 17 #172
I'm just doing that now, i unplugged everything and checked all connections, made all the cables weren't tangled etc. It's those drivers i'm concerned about though, many reports of issues with more recent ones, some seem to have to run 16.1.2 to get it working, even installing the driver manually.

Oh yeah my SSD was running super slow as well which made me think it was a power or GPU issue, back to normal now so maybe the gremlins have been expunged! I also discovered the bios switch on the side, don't know if that could be related. Will update in a bit.

Anyway to test the card without installing the drivers?
The_Hoff
14 Feb 17 #173
It sounds purely and simply like a lack of power mate if there's an impact to your SSD. If you've got a friend with a computer that may be suitable that's a possible option.

AMD just released 17.2.1 today. The BIOS is worth checking as typically one is "boost" and one is "normal", boost will obviously use more power, but either shout boot technically.

Before you continue though, try running in safe mode, then run DDU again.

Log back on and install 17.2.1.
teejuana
14 Feb 17 #174
I'm not sure what was going on but in hindsight i should have done a lot of prep before installing the GPU instead of just casually plugging it in. I installed the 16.1.2 drivers tonight and it worked! Image quality is a big step up from the HD7850, really pleased.

Yeah my SSD was booting faster after i ran diagnostics on it on my laptop so i think the issues was with that and not the card. Now boots in about 12 secs and seems a lot more responsive.

I've created a recovery drive should i run into issues, see how it goes but i'm chuffed.

Oh yeah no idea what the bios was set to initially, would help if AMD put that info somewhere lol. Are you saying clean install drivers each time they're released?
The_Hoff
14 Feb 17 #175
Ah, congrats. Perceiverance to the rescue.

To be honest, it shouldn't be that difficult but it sounds like you had a rare mix of issues which probably clouded things somewhat.

The BIOS switch is marked on my Sapphire Fury, but I guess it is one of those things you'll find out when you read the manual (:stuck_out_tongue:) prior to installing... I know, who reads that guff?!

The driver stuff, well you now I think have a repeatable process in the worst case with the 16.X drivers. Personally I always do a DDU when going from one version to the next (16>17) but not each increment.

Prior to updating though I always check the AMD Reddit for any large issues with titles I play, though to be honest I haven't suffered any side effects even for games citing issues in the known issues notes.

So, I'd say try you luck when you're feeling brave and update to 17.2.1.

Got mine 10 days ago, not worked for 9 1/2 days..........
Installed drivers, all was good.
Played bf1 for half an hour, all was well, and then screen was playing up, flashing etc.
Now it wont even post on start up. Says no signal from card. Blue power light works on card, idicating the power supply is good.
After reading plenty, the UEFI problem keeps getting mentioned. My PC is not UEFI, but it worked fine for 30 mins !
Dont think I can run this mobo with UEFI ( too old ? 2012), maybe Ive got a card that was weak from the start !!!

MY PC should be enough for it.... guess more reading is required.....

S**t!

-Have you tried flicking the BIOS switch on the card?
-Do the fans spin OK? Unobstructed etc?
-Was it overclocked?
-Have you tried removing all additional RAM/Drives from your machine and booting?
-Tried resetting your BIOS to default settings?
-Tried the card in a friends machine?

Try some/all of the above and report back, otherwise it looks like RMA time.

Here are some alt. options depending on how your RMA plays out:

Speak to Ballicom tomorrow and process your RMA, usually takes a bit of time and you can always cancel it. It sounds like it's dead TBH, if it was a BIOS issue it wouldn't post at all.

Not a great experience for you!
teejuana
16 Feb 17 #181
@Simon_H It does sound like it might be faulty, i looked at all the issues with the 480 when troubleshooting and most were reboot loops driver related) or random shut downs (PSU related).

I've got the 480 working now with the 16.7.1 drivers but i updated and Windows crashed, rolled back and it's fine but i am getting shut-downs when gaming even though i set the cpu to stock so definitely a PSU issue, mine's a 550w antec truepower fwiw but maybe try the older drivers.

The only other thing that worked for was installing the driver manually via system the installing the radeon applet and using Trixx to set the clock speeds but obviously such workarounds are not idea with a new GPU.
