Bought this myself the other week when it was £195.

Previous deal has been expired but this is now £189.98 including free delivery.

Mine is in a Fractal Design Node 202 case and I'm very pleased with the performance.

Although it might be worth waiting a few weeks for AMD Ryzen to come out, we don't know performance or UK pricing yet though.

why? ryzen is CPU
Polaris is GPU
Vega (yet unreleased high end Fury replacement) is GPU

The decline in prices on these midrange cards is easily explained by the normal, yearly sales slump in Feb-Apr when most smart PC builders buy their parts

I'm a photographer and I'm looking to upgrade my current setup. I currently use dual monitors which I'm looking to upgrade for Dell UltraSharp U2515H 25" IPS 2K Monitor (I haven't got the budget or need for 4K just yet.)

Frustratingly, my current GFX card has 1x HDMI, 1x DVI and 1x RGB connections, the U2515H requires HDMI or DisplayPort connections.

I NEVER use my PC for gaming, just for internet, basic tasks and Photoshop/Lightroom.

Is this card recommended for my purpose or complete overkill? Any help would be greatly appreciated, all I know is that I want to have a dual-monitor setup and the rest doesn't mean an awful lot to me in all honesty!
Trefonix to bildo
16 Feb 17 1 #16
I have that exact monitor! Very nice. I use a 390X with it and it's great. This is a little overkill for basic tasks but it'll work great
polly69 to bildo
16 Feb 17 2 #18
If that's the case any GPU is overkill just save yourself £200 and use the on board graphics, if its a newish rig the onboard graphics are pretty good there's no need for a £200 gaming card even dual monitor setups are supported then you have no worry about PSU power. If you must have a card avoid XfX they have terrible customer service you only get 1 years warranty if i remember correctly and they are cheap for a reason they are a very unreliable brand, spend the extra £15 and get the MSI which have UK support and longer warranty.
Gkains to bildo
16 Feb 17 1 #20
It should be possible to get DVI<>HDMI cables, but the U2515H is 1440P so that might be tricker than 1080P.
You didn't mention what card you currently have, but here's someone who had success with a ancient GTX260:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/peripherals/f/3529/t/19642213
Also, as well as the model number of your current card, what CPU & Motherboard do you have?
Because if you have a recent CPU with iGPU that should be enough to drive at least one of the monitors and it is usually possible to set it up in the BIOS to use both.
Anyway, this card is totally over the top for your requirements unless Photoshop/Lightroom can use the GPU for some acceleration (and even if they can it might only be noticeable in a few filters).
babswatkins to bildo
16 Feb 17 2 #21
I have the u2515h and it's amazing... I would say that an rx 480 is probably overkill and to invest in more ram and to get a very low end graphics card with display port connections

Photographer here, I recently upgraded to an ultrasharp UP2716D and had to have the GPU to run it to its potential. I opted for a £120 GTX 1050 oc a lot cheaper than this and still overkill, I don't even get the fans spinning when editing.

However I do have the option to play some battlefield when I am not grafting!

Vega (the 500 series) is due out sometime in the second quarter of this year, so probably mid-June.

When to buy Tech is easy: if you need it now, buy it now; if not, then wait. Tech will always get smaller, cheaper and faster in the long run but, as Keynes said: "In the long run, we are all dead."

You mean 2H?
Q1 & Q2 is 1H, Q3 & Q4 is 2H.
So it could be as long as Q4 2017 before we see Vega (490 or 500 series)... hoping not, but they were "supposed" to release in Q42016/Q12017 and then pushed back

- True 8 Bit IPS LG Panel inside the U2515H, roughly £300. Might be possible to purchase a 10 bit PLS / VA / IPS for a similar price but depends on your exact specifications of your machine. Depends on your setup whether the Radeon Rx480 can simply replace the GTX graphics card, but without more information on the Power Supply Unit it is difficult to post a recommendation. Although could be overkill as a lower model Nvidia / AMD GC could be sufficient for your requirements.

My advice is post your full computer specifications on the Misc section with your requirements and budget then you'll get plenty of responses.

16 Feb 17 1 #19
Something like an RX460 would probably do it for £100, you can daisy chain the displayport cable(s) in a pinch if there's not enough dp outputs. 2515Hs support it just fine, nice monitors.
bildo
16 Feb 17 #24
Thanks for your response, it's reassuring you like the monitor so much! Perhaps I should look at alternatives in that case.

Thanks for your advice.

My PC is an Asus M51BC. It has an upgraded graphics card previously (as the previous one couldn't run dual monitor at all). According to Device Manager it's a AMD Radeon R9 255. When I Googled it most of the results looked different, it definitely has a VGA, HDMI and DVI only.

According to Google, my power supply is 500W (350W Peak).

Please see above quote for basic answers, I appreciate the MSI suggestion, thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Not heard of Daisychaining them before, but it'd need an upgrade from my current situation anyway.

Processor
AMD® AM3+
Chipset
AMD 970

Thanks for the suggestion, probably best to look at some cheaper options!

My understanding is that DVI wouldn't support the resolution required? (2560 x 1440)

From what I was reading, to be able to use it with this setup I'd need to get an 'active' switch/converter, which in itself costs around £100. I figured I may aswell kill two birds with one stone and upgrade both while I'm already there.

16 Feb 17 1 #25
That link from the Dell forum said they were able to do use the DVI from their old GTX 260 to drive your monitor at 1440P.
A DVDI<>HDMI cable is about £2-£3 on ebay though so surely worth the risk.
For instance item # 252488192520 even has 1440 in the description.
Uncommon.Sense
16 Feb 17 1 #26
DVI-D dual link supports up to 2560x1600 resolution, but you are right sadly the adapter will probably limit you to single link 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 maximum.
You can buy much cheaper cards than this that support what you need though, oh and I run dual Dell U2515H monitors for photo editing, fully calibrated they are absolutely superb.

What is this like for video rendering? Is CUDA supported in Premiere Pro does anyone know?

vulcanproject to iamdamien

It's OK for video rendering. But if you are specifically using Adobe software and Premiere Pro then stick with Nvidia. GTX1060.

It has improved a lot with Opencl over the years but the fact remains the mercury engine in that Adobe software is built around Nvidia's CUDA. Better support and compatibility in CUDA.

I just bit the bullet and bought one myself. It's a really good price I reckon. I can't see it getting any cheaper. It should be good for a good few years too. Should serve as a good upgrade for you, I reckon. For me, I've just put together a budget gaming/htpc and needed a GPU. The 480, simply put, is not an iteration in performance, it's just a 290x redux in a cheaper package with more VRAM.

If you already have a 290x, 390, or a 285+, there is no point changing to the 470/480.

The only cards this last generation that have improved performance are the 1070 and the 1080 (ignoring the Titan, because ok..).

anyone use these for video editing? I know premiere pro is programmed to make use of cuda cores in Nvidia cards, amd seem to have "stream processors". are these the amd equivalent and are they good for premiere

Edit: prob safer to stick with Nvidia for premiere pro and after effects
http://create.pro/blog/opencl-vs-cuda/
best stick with Nvidia for premier pro I think

Premiere Pro should have an option to select either CUDA (nVidia proprietary) or OpenGL for AMD cards.
109place
18 Feb 17 #55
Im sure it will, but from what I read, some functions perform better work Cuda than opengl (mercury playback engine for real time video editing & accelerated rendering - should provide a faster smoother timeline, apparently). So yeah, not sure how much difference that would make in real time, or how much of an upgrade this card would be from my gtx760, but I'll prob make my next upgrade with Nvidia for premier pro

No, but it is a 37% upgrade.

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/RX_480/24.html

I still think that's relatively close and not worth dropping 200 quid on, unless you are pushing games to their max and need an extra 30-40% performance to enjoy what you currently play.

I personally would hold off for another round of GFX cards to see what they have.

I'm in the same position - will be hanging onto the card for a good few years so would like to future proof as much as possible. If I could save a bit of cash and not really notice any performance difference then I'd go for this card, but still thinking 'well it's only another £20 for a 1060'.
