Actually You can cap your allowance on Three. Your data is capped by default and you can cap your minutes as well if you want to. I can't really see the trap aspect of this.

it wasn't £8, was it?
it was £13 p/m with £50 quidco (or 2 x £25 Amazon) working as £8.83 p/m

It's daft really, I left 3 about a month ago. This was exactly the type of plan I wanted at the right price. All they wanted to do was sell me a £15pm plan with lots of data I didn't need or use.

So they lose a long term customer and then promptly offer the deal to all that they said they couldn't do!

Horses. Stable Doors.

Of course it does - buses are huge! When did you last manage to get a video of them "at it"? :smirk: You need a high quality camera so the resulting video's are bigger meaning you use more data. I think that's it, right?

The whole point started with 'ding' stating 500mb won't last 10 mins. So 2gb would only last 40min. So no it wasn't a serious question, it was just emphasising what he said was not a valid comment for most users.

I really don't understand all the grief about this comment. I get through 2gb easily just general browsing. IE reading the Guardian or googling. It really doesn't take long to get through 2gb at all. Especially commuter's.

As an interesting aside.. i spent a couple of sessions to Vodafone "technical support" today reporting the (very very) slow 3g speed as a fault. "Ah yes there is a ticket in your area which will resolve this issue" (lie). "This problem will be resolved quickly" (lie). They seem to have customer service bots who are just programmed to lie repeatedly and fob you off.. I knew this before I signed up, so more fool me.

You can call your wife?!? Is that a good thing :-D

I see all these 30gb plans I'm on unlimited data for 13.66 with the 50 quick I got after a long 6 month f off. Worried that when the contract ends I'm left on 23 and these Malaysian rangers won't give me anything decent as an upgrade. Looking for 30gb for 15 if I can get on that half price Ee deal that's been on three times then great as that's perm rolling 30 day

I'm on the iD mobile £5 a month. 5000 texts instead of unlimited, and 1GB of Data instead of 500MB on 4G. Same base network (although lower priority being a virtual network), but works well enough for me.

The network coverage can be a bit of a pain though at times..

Welcome

3 also has 1800mhz Ofcom made EE sell for the merger requirement, why its MBNL partner was allowed to buy it I'll never know because at any point 3/EE should share it again ? So what is the point ? ?

3 has 850MHZ spectrum too, but in my opinion my whole regional area is mainly the old 2100mhz I connect too. Opensignal.com is a great app to see some basic info, certainly for me it showed my where my EE cell/base stations were and with a clear line of sight to the nearest signal issues should not have been happening from one side if the apartment, thus I got out of contract early because there were 3Gcapacity and hardware on site issues and no map reported 4G coverage (as with 3).

On Vodafone I have no clear line of site on a hill with two Vodafone behind me higher up but have 2/3 bars of 4G, Cornerstone Voda & o2's joint network can't give me 4G indoors on o2 just 3G but Voda can 4G but not 3G. Go figure! Frequency and handset dependent and some hardware in phones is better than others, a mobile signal is as complex as DNA, numerous factors come into play.

This may (hopefully) or may not be helpful

I recently left Three for Voda. My observation there 3g is that it is very very fast. It's as fast as "4g" is on Voda, but, as they dont have any 2g coverage, the dead spots where I couldnt make a call were too frequent. With Voda I have full bars of 4g in Waitrose which was previous a dead spot for Three, but at work, where it says 3g and my 3g on Three was excellent, that the Voda signal is awful, and slow, but at least I can call my wife.

The signal only goes to one bar when the phone is taken to a particular part of the house. So it looks like it's both a capacity and signal issue which is obviously even worse.

Only place I got EC only was a Orange coverage 3 shut off expecting 3 coverage. 3s 2100mhz will have problems penetrating indoors, the lower the spectrum the shorter and better the signal.

I left 3 when TheOnePlan was culled from me - leaving them was the biggest failure I had with them, they made it impossible.

I can see that I'm unable to change your mind. I will NEVER go to Vodaphone. I bit the bullet last year just before Christmas and registered with Vodafone after being with 3 Network for many years. It was the WORST mistake I ever made!

The Voda sim only deal then was 3g only NOT 4g as advertised. Apparently their sim was not properly provisioned for 4g use. The signal constantly dopped and was not stable. I have a new Samsung Note 4 and had it checked. The staff in the shops were ignorant and unhelpful and said that they don't have the time or facilities look into the matter. 3 network on the other hand have been very helpful and their signal great. You stick with Voda. They need all the customers they can get -after all the complaints and fines they received last year!

It's been like that since the the beginning of GSM, it was a requirement of the UK licensing AFAIK. The only difference now is that modern phones actually display the message 'Emergency Calls Only'... older phones simply showed no signal, but should still attempt to route a 112 or 999 call via any network available.

It can be, but I personally have never had any capacity issues with 3 for calls, only the complete loss of coverage in certain areas... which then gives you the 'Emergency Calls Only' situation. It's normally nothing to do with capacity, if you check the coverage map, you usually find you are in an area with poor or no coverage.

For example, 3 coverage around me is reasonable, but not perfect. A neighbour has an old house with thick walls, he struggled with 3 and ended up swapping to Vodafone. If I walk into his house, I see 'Emergency Calls Only' almost immediately... as soon as I walk out of his front door, the phone reconnects to 3 and I can make calls as normal.

Depends on whether you want to watch online media or listen to online music with it or not. If you want a plan for Netflix, Twitch, Youtube and Spotify then it's obviously not the ideal plan. I use wifi or my wife's tethering, so haven't bothered with big data plans yet. For low demanding stuff 500mb will last.

When did the UK bring that in ?

Can also be a phone fault/imported mobile frequency issues or sim issues, more often that not it is capacity on 3, also switch ALL roaming options off on the phone as the old 'Orange' network roaming agreement can show such since 3 barred access to Orange where it (thinks it) has a available 3 signal.

One thing worth knowing is topping up £5 on 3 PAYG grants you 150MB free for 30 days on top. I'm a light user who relies pretty much on just data (1p per MB) and the odd phone call. This is a good deal if you text a lot also but the PAYG option is really under rated.

I highly recommend Opera Mini to compress data required to download web pages.

This sounds pretty average to me. I used to have an O2 PAYG which was 10 pounds per month, so OK twice the cost of this, but it was several years ago and not requiring a 12 month commitment. The package was similar to this Three product 500MB etc. The reason I got rid was that eventually the data allocation was not enough even for browsing and normal stuff. Don't forget your phone does things in the background requiring data checking your email and so on. Point I am making you don't need to be streaming addict to blow that 500MB quite easily.
breslau
11 Feb 17 #64
1gb should be the bare minimum. Our older aunt got a 500mb package and immediately went over it when her phone updated itself.. having to have the grasp of turning data on and off and rationing it is just unnecessary in this day and age.

Agreed. I think it's pointless when people post comments saying that one carrier or another is poor in their area - what's the point? If there was one company who had perfect signal everywhere then I think we'd have heard by now! So yeah, it's horses for courses. If 3 is good where you are, great. If not, big deal. 3 and EE are the only 2 that work near me, but I don't bother telling people that O2 is garbage

I like three, because they have fast and affordable data (although the coverage can be spotty in the countryside).

Amazon had a special with a 24GB PAYG sim over 2 years for 28 pounds, but that seems to have expired.

The 3-2-1 tariff is also not bad. It works out a bit more expensive than this if you use all the allowance, but it is more flexible.

Data usage is not defined by time but by consumption. Equally 4Gb would not last 10 mins (if I max out my 4g connection).

If you only want to check your emails, read a few web pages and use Google maps once in a while then 500mb will be plenty.

If you stream any kind of service on a regular basis then it is pretty obvious you will need more.

100 mins actually....if you were to stream Netflix on its lowest bit rate that is.

Deal is OK for a low user

Three allow you to cap data via their website. I'm currently on a £9 per month sim and when I log into the site, look under the "Allowance", "Control Your Spending" and you should get options to not go over your data/minute allowance

+1 for this I do it so I get no surprise bills

Very good deal if you are a low user.

What i should of said " 500mb wouldnt last ME 10 mins "
lianne21
11 Feb 17 1 #19
Mind it's only a quid more for 250 mins and 1GB data with EE. I just got that one as Three pants in my area.

11 Feb 17 3 #17
I'd of though for a low user their 321 payg plan would make more sense.
oldsystem
11 Feb 17 3 #16
Might as well just use Three's PAYG SIM, probably be better off for a very low user.

11 Feb 17 3 #13
You can get unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 4GB data for £8 a month right now on 3 (12 months sim only) at mobilephonesdirect.

Great deal, pity I get a poor reception with three where I am though.
Magoo_222 to kooks65
11 Feb 17 3 #12
They've got an app called Three in Touch, it lets you make calls and send texts over WiFi. Still counts towards your allowance, but useful for poor reception areas.

11 Feb 17 11 #8
Actually You can cap your allowance on Three. Your data is capped by default and you can cap your minutes as well if you want to. I can't really see the trap aspect of this.

Just rang EE as i"m just out of contract and they price matched this so happy!
