They all seem to say that freezers are unsuitable for outbuildings etc. All I can say is that I have a chest freezer, and a small fridge in my unheated garage. I was wary about putting freezer in garage, but have had no problems in two years. Think they say this to cover themselves if put in a really cold place. Maybe parts of Scotland would give trouble, but not sunny Wales! Also hope that Ripperoo is not known to his wife, good **** will follow if seen!

yes, its fridge/freezers that are controlled by 1 stat that are unsuitable for out building.

not true, most combined fridge/freezers have just 1 thermostat controlling the whole unit, this stat is in the refrigerator and only runs the compressor when the refrigerator requires cooling (this also cools the freezer) If the stat in the refrigerator never switches as the ambient temperature is never hotter that the internal fridge temperature then the freezer will defrost but the food in the fridge will stay cold.
More expensive fridge/freezers have 2 thermostats, one for each cavity so they can be run in colder ambient temperatures.

At first when I was looking around for a freezer, I thought any freezer can do into the garage/outbuildings, but apparently not. You need a look out for freezers that is suitable for out building use.

a few months ago I got a freezer cheap with some argos vouchers, best thing I bought in years.
I can now stock up taking advantage of the Tesco fresh oily fish stonking offers they frequently have in my local.
Their herring/ sprats/ sardines frequently cheaper than the competition
Have some heat :smiley:

I'm in a bit of a quandary as I just called Swan CS and they told me it should be stored in an 'ambient temperature' which in plain speak means not suitable for outbuildings.

I'd call back and ask the reasons why, if they're advising that and they cant tell you the reasons why then take their advice with a pinch of salt, I think you'll find they are mistaken. Swan is just a brand only, the units are manufactured in China and Shop Direct import them with a Swan badge, they then employ an English office as the CS (normally non engineer phone operators)
I can assure you from a technical point of view there is no reason at all that a chest freezer or any other freezer only model needs to be kept in a warm ambient temperature.
