Good one - I think I will make a comment

Now look out for the cold votes and the hypocrytical anoraks saying "Ooooh it's re-certified I will lose all my data, and I am scared of this, because all brand new disks last forever and have a 3 year warranty, so nobody ever loses data on a new disk, and Joe Nobb 'ead will come on and say "I had one of these that lasted 7 seconds, they're rubbish"

And so on.

So use it as a baby "cloud" server for your home, access movies and music from anywhere in your house, great fun and easy to set up

So plug and go with COPIES of media files or overflow Humax recordings, or your fave MP3's and this will enable to to do lots with your existing TV, or existing phone (probably)

Yes but no, but what ARE the chances?

There is certainty that one potential problem has been fixed. There's a 6 month guarantee. Only hard drives I've had die on me have been 2 weeks old and 10 years old. No one gives 10 year guarantees on hard drives.
Also, if it has been checked twice. Presumably someone with a more specialist skill set has repaired it since they are usually made on a production line. So isn't is less likely to fail now? What are the chances?
Also, don't people just return stuff because they changed their mind? I bet WD stick it straight onto the re-certified pile. What ARE the chances?

You will hear this often. The chances are becasue its most peoples experience having dipped their toe in:
I've bought re-certified WD several times. They look brand new and none have failed.

Thanks op and great added.

Recertified or not the price is great. Regardless of being , as you always have backups, the risk is minimal, merely an inconvenience if it should fall.

Like the more versed have already concluded, if you're relying solely on a single drive then you're asking for trouble anyway. The chances of these going wrong is possibly higher then normal drives, but these were normal drives previously so I presume the original owners probably felt pretty happy buying them first time around. Use backups, mirroring, cloud and/or elaborate RAID to enhance you chances of keeping what you value. Banging price for 6TB, using it to replace a lightly used Western Digitial Red 3TB that died after 3 years.
basergorkobal
9 Feb 17 #20
I got the 4TB version last time round.
Very basic NAS functionality. Performance is pretty good for a cheap nas. Drive is a nasware 3.0. it's got a recertified label new serial no and 6 months warranty.

We'll there's one less now. I've been watching this since it was posted to get a feel for it.
As it's for a back-up of a back-up - it's a no brainer. The chance of three drives dying simultaneously is pretty slim.
No, I'm not challenging the universe.

exactly so don't use this recertified drive full stop, if its been built and sealed in dust proof factory on a production line and then gone faulty I wouldn't like to guess how they've now 'recertified' it.

9 Feb 17 #31
I class a 'backup' as an important use so would never use a second hand drive for that.
n17d
9 Feb 17 3 #32
Are you just being argumentative? I keep 2 copies of all my important data. If one goes down, I have another. I have purchased one of these for that exact reason. By all means buy a brand new drive if you have money to burn, but don't think that means you don't need to bother with a backup. Or are you suggesting I should keep a backup of a backup of a backup, just in case!!!! I would also add that I have also purchased refurbished WD drives from this store previously. All appear brand new and never had a problem with years of use. They are not mickey house refurbs, despite what you may believe.
paulj48
9 Feb 17 2 #33
My initial remark was 'do not use this for anything important' I class any back media as important otherwise there's no point having that backup regardless of other copies held.

The remark about 'mickey house refurbs' I'm not sure what that means but I've worked in the 'refurb' sector and sometimes a wipe with a cloth and a power on test is all that is done sometimes, wrap the leads neat and that fools people into thinking they've never been used. Like I said previously if a drive has failed, apart from the pcb on the hard drive there's nothing else that can have been repaired unless in a dust proof environment. I wouldn't be surprised if a quick format of these and a power on test is the only 'recertification' that has been done.

I have money to burn :man:, and I bought one. I'm happy with my decision.
The back-up debate stands whether its a top notch drive, run of the mill, refurbished or whatever. It all boils down to likelihood, importance of data, economies and an element of risk.

That was my thought on the subject too, so I ordered a 6TB refurbished unit 2 weeks back via an earlier posting on HUKD.

Unfortunately it refused to get an IP address from any of the 3 routers I used for testing. I worked with the support team to ensure that I'd checked as much as possible (4 sec reset, 40 sec reset, different cables, different routers) and the device would not get an IP address, the status light wasn't indicating anything, and it didn't appear in the router configuration pages in any form. I'd consider myself very familiar and comfortable with home networking. The support team eventually agreed that it was faulty so I returned it.

OK, so I was unlucky, but I'm still not convinced that the refurb process was done satisfactorily.

9 Feb 17 #46
I agree, there's no way I'd risk a re-certified drive just to save a few £, its false economy. In many cases they won't be able to diagnose the problem correctly so will just ship the faulty drive back out again, or mark a few sectors bad in the drives BIOS. If you back up data to two drives there's a greater chance that you will lose your data if one of them is known to have been faulty in the past.

Not worth the few £ saving.

9 Feb 17 #48
I bought a 4tb refurb a while ago and when I received it, the damn thing wouldn't even power on.

Their website claim that all refurbs are thoroughly tested, so either they're lying or it got damaged in transit.

Anyway, returned for a refund and bought a new Synology NAS instead. But I did buy a 4tb WD Red direct from WD - a brand new one!
rich139luck
9 Feb 17 #49
I'd avoid like the plague. Have the 3tb mycloud. First one froze completely and was unable to be restored or get anything retrieved. Was unable to use the auto Backup feature for some reason too. Do a bit of research on Google first and see how many issues there are. It's cheap for a reason!!

9 Feb 17 #50
Thanks OP but save the hassle and buy NEW not secondhand lol
cactusbob
9 Feb 17 #51
The problems are much more likely to be due to the firmware on the enclosure rather than the drive itself. With mine, the drive will be coming straight out and into my Synology (if it's a Red that is)

I bought the 6TB Mirror version nearly a year ago and haven't had any problems with it -- I use it as a backup of my media (movies, music, photos) so I can stream them around the house to TVs, Kodi boxes, etc. Works very well.

As I've mentioned on a few of these WD MyCloud posts, there are a couple of really poorly written services which run on the OS of the NAS and thrash it by doing needless indexing and other stuff. Google "optimise WD my cloud" for instructions on how to disable these and it'll be a great little NAS with very good performance.

So, mine arrived but it doesn't seem to be working. Bahahahahaa  !

The setup webpage can't find it on the network (although it is visible in finder) and the dashboard isn't visible via http://wdmycloud.local/.

I might have cracked it - it seemed to have a dodgy IP thanks to a temperamental Access Point, despite the WD being plugged directly into the router. Another problem for another day.

15 Feb 17 #63
Yup - cheers Chocci. The OSX version of that utility did manage to identify that it's allocated IP wasn't where it should have been and that pointed me in the right direction for resolution.
