I agree just go online and it's free!
I never got my Radio Times's on the £1.00 deal and I had to claim the money back via my bank.
More hassle than it's worth just for free issues.

My subscription is coming to an end, and they want to put it up to £65 for 26 issues. I wonder if I cancel this, and go for 10 issues free and cheaper 6 months or will they not consider me as a 'new' subscriber? (I suppose I could order in the wife's name if necessary ;-))

Why waste any money on this just pick your iPad, tablet, up or if your still not up to date try teletext or ceefax

Or, in a similar vein, why waste any money on a book when you can read the synopsis on Amazon?

I've done this a few times around October / November, to get the Christmas issue free mainly.
Tried it last year and even though the cashback tracked and paid out (at £5.25), no direct debit was setup the magazine never arrived. Emailed them and was told I was not entitled to the offer as I had previously trialled it.
To check the TV listings on Ceefax you'll also be needing a time machine. It closed down in October 2012.

Good deal, for those that still use. I also got the one before xmas, no issues cancelling (just called them) after the first edition had been delivered and received all 12 editions I ordered, plus the quidco payment (which was £5 then). Have to be honest, probably didn't look at more than 3 copies.

If you've signed up before can you do this again with the same name and bank details. A silly question to some but can't be bothered doing it on another bank and name.
My Mum does enjoy reading these!

With regards to the direct debit, fairly certain the bank can't charge you anything at all if you cancel it and the other party still try to debit your account. Direct debit is not a fixed term contract and can be cancelled at any point by the account holder. You are then withdrawing authorisation for said company to make any or future withdrawals from your bank account. How often have people still continued to have debits taken from their accounts from say mobile phone providers, Virgin, sky etc after cancelling or moving services bucause the provider never cancelled their end of you never cancelled direct debit?.
You could cancel with radio times and yet still see your account debited. Only way to stop payments is to withdraw your consent and cancel direct debit otherwise can be a nightmare getting unauthorised debit back!.

the bank won't charge you anything in that scenario - it might charge you if you left the DD in place but did not have sufficient funds but that's different
you always need to check the T&Cs though - with insurance cos you might still owe them money in various scenarios if you simply cancel the DD without informing them:
- perhaps you already received the insurance cover but did not pay for it
- your insurance took the form of a credit agreement (loan) with a specified term such as 12 months - this is fairly common and easy not to understand you entered this kind of agreement when it's hidden in the small print and all you are doing is making a monthly payment by DD

Is anyone else having issues reliably getting this offer on multiple occasions? I use this to get RT delivered to my nan, and it used to work fine signing up fairly regularly. However, the last few times I've signed up they've either sent nothing at all or sent one issue and nothing else. Both times they didn't take the £1. I've received no e-mails saying the subscription had been cancelled, and everything went through OK when I signed up. I just wondered if this is happening to other people, or am I just being unlucky? If the subscription is getting cancelled, I wish they'd just tell me! Thanks.

In fact, a DD contract (unlike a Standing Order) can be cancelled only by the payee/recipient of the money - they're the ones who initiated it, albeit with the information you provided for them. Cancelling the DD at your bank stops the bank from paying out the money (in theory at least), but if Radio Times Subscriptions still request it, your bank is entitled to charge you a 'handling/administrative' fee, in much the same way as they would if your cheque bounced. So, to be safe, just give RTSubs a ring as well.
On the subject of the offer itself: 2 and a bit years ago, I took out one of these 12-issues-for-a-pound offer, followed by a 6-monthly DD of £29. They have just written to tell me that my 6-monthly DD is going to be increased to £49.92 from the 7th April - and yes, this just reflects the inflation in the shop-price over the past 2 years! So I have cancelled. However, if I now take out this new deal (which is slightly cheaper, at 12-for-£1 + £39.00/6months, direct from Radio Times Subscriptions) and they then hold the DD rate for another 2 years, I'll feel that I'm still getting good value, but also that I'm not cheating them or pushing them into bankruptcy (after all, a number of issues are always wasted - when we're away - and I never read any issue from cover to cover!)
And if you hang on a bit, I predict there'll be some new offers available round about mothers day, probably involving free chocolates or something similar

I have received my first copy, the direct debit is set up but they haven't taken anything yet. I'm going to wait for the £1 to go out then cancel DD, will this stop them taking £39.99 after the year is up or do I have to call them?
Newbold to Gauney
7 Mar 171#24
It will stop the DD from being taken, but unless you cancel with RT as well there's a tiny theoretical risk that they might hold you to the contract to pay. Extremely unlikely in practice.

Horses for courses, I suppose. Some like the Guardian/Telegraph, some the Express/Sun. Probably of greatest value to those who are selective about what they watch, and want to know more about a programme before they watch or listen to it. If you're happy using EPG you probably won't want RT.
However, if you're a Radio 4 listener, chances are you'll get a lot out of it (sweeping generalisation, admittedly ).

They don't particularly interest me.
EPG info is enough for me. I don't usually sit there pre planning my viewing I usually just watch whatever's on at the time.
As it happens I still voted HOT on the deal. It's fantastic value for what it is. Just that in my experience, when I'd subscribed in the past, nobody in our house read the thing it just sat there, often still in it's wrapper, and the same will happen with others.
As I say it seems a good idea when first when you sign up. It's a British institution all of it's own but I imagine it's sales must falling somewhat these days.

Are you serious? Have you ever read the programme details and reviews in the Radio Times? EPGs are fine for setting the Humax etc but they're of little use if you want any programme details of any consequence.

I took this offer out in November and cancelled about month later. however I then received a letter to say they had set up a direct debit up. I spoke to them again telling them I wanted to cancel and again they said they had done it. 2 weeks later I received another letter saying they were going to start taking 39 pound from my account.
3 phone calls and a very frustrating time, hopefully I never hear from them again as I've seen plenty of people having the same problem

I'm currently on this from just before Christmas. When I checked my account, it said it was not an auto renewal account, so that no money will be taken after the 3 months are up. But yes, just cancel the direct debit as soon as you get the first edition and you will continue to get the rest until the 12 editions are up.
Also they were very helpful to me when I emailed them. They advised me that I would not be charged after the 12 editions but also on their own advice, to cancel the direct debit if I hadn't already done so just incase, and all would be good. Might try it again even though my current sub hasn't quite run out, or would that be being greedy? :smirk:
