Placed an order yesterday but something went wrong with the card authentication and the order failed, and I have to wait 5 days for my funds to come back out of limbo.
Hopefully the Argos deal will be available by then as it ends 12th March. Or maybe Amazon will give us a Horizon Pro bundle if we all cross our fingers.

PS4 Pro Rise of the Tomb Raider does use checkerboarding. 2160p checkerboard, this is from the devs who Digital Foundry contacted.

Yeah, I plan to get a PS4 at the end of its lifecycle and play any games I missed.
I think the perfect combo with a gaming PC is a Switch as it adds portability, but only if you like Nintendos IP. No point getting an Xbox, with cross play offering most of the exclusive on the PC it kinda makes it pointless. Everyone to their own though, no doubt some people on here will detest anything Nintendo but for me it's the perfect combo.

In the UK at least, PSN credit can almost always be found for less than its market value. If you know what you're doing then there should never really be any reason to pay full price for it.
Just.Wondering

I am pretty much in the same boot , Plus you can still use the o2 credit deal £10 for £20 for any digital sales or 12 monthly subs for PSN....

Depends on you. Do you have a 4k TV and also how often do you intend on using it?

1 Mar 17#74
Tomb Raider didn't use the Checker boarding AFAIK. They essentially took the Windows version and then just scaled it back a bit to work with the Pro's enhanced GPU.
IMHO it is worth having a gaming PC and a PS4 (not necessarily Pro) these days. There are bargains galore to be had on the PC and although I greatly dislike the PS4 as a platform, it is pretty much the only console with exclusives that still pique my interest.
Leonintelex
1 Mar 17#73
True, Watchdogs does run well and they have done a good job, but it's an exception. Take Tomb Raider, it looks dramatically different on the Pro (quality is dialled back considerably) yet it runs at 40 FPS on max settings on a 1070.
Don't get me wrong the PS4 Pro is great for 4K on a limited budget. But if you already have a PC with a decent CPU hooked up to your TV then drop in a 1070 and you can't go wrong, especially now prices are dropping.
Also to add the 1080 is a beast, I have never struggled to run anything at 4K and the difference in quality between the PS4 Pro is night and day. Most games are 60 FPS+ with high settings and in true 4K. It's impossible to compare as it's on another level. The ti will be insane.
My mate was instantly converted after playing Titanfall 2 and BF1 on my rig, he sold his pro and invested in a high-end PC.

1 Mar 171#69
No it doesn't. The PS4 Pro uses a custom checker boarding technique to essentially replicate a 4k image. That's why games like Watch Dogs 2 that take full advantage of that technology look comparable to the PC version running at high-ultra settings. The PC literally has no comparable technology right now and the only way to do 4k on a PC is true 4k. Is that a superior alternative? Most definitely but you're not going to get that kind of performance out of a 1070 or even a 1080 most of the time.
And just to be clear, as others on here will tell you, I am definitely no PS4 fanboy. I actually hate the damn thing and I think it has been the most undeservedly successful console since the PS2. Unfortunately when it comes to 4k on a reasonable budget atm though, the PS4 Pro wins hands down.

Or you could just pretend that games are supposed to be fun, enjoyable experiences and get lost in the lore, story, world, whatever, and forget how many pixels you're looking at, because it's really not that important.
Then you could spend more money on games, and less money on tech. 1080 this and 4K this and 60FPS that, it's all justifying why you just spend £700 on a piece of tech. Just play the damn games

Leonintelex

I agree, but in comparison to a PS4 Pro which is touted as a 4k console it offers significantly better performance at 4k.
If you want the best 4k performance then a 1080 or the new 1080 ti. I have a 1080 and it runs 4k in most games at 60 FPS, even at high settings.
Personally I run at 1440p as gaming at 100+ FPS at 144hz is sublime.

The 1070 is no 4k card. I know, I've owned one for the largest part of a year. It blows the ps4 out of the water for sure but it was not designed for 4k.

I'm currently thinking of getting a PS4 is it worth gettting the pro over the slim? I don't have a 4k TV and not planning on getting one anytime soon. I have a an Xbox one which will be used for most of my gaming, so PS4 is only going to be for exclusives. Will games get any slow down in the slim compared to the pro, or is it just upscaled graphics?

Originally games needed specific patches to take advantage of any of the new power, but with the upcoming firmware update all games will be able to use it.
Since it has a faster CPU Clock and more raw GPU power then it should games better than the slim, at least in terms of dropping frames etc.
of course as with everything it will vary from game to game.
