I'm voting hot - but reluctantly tbh.
I was a LIFE customer that got taken over by Plusnet.
I got the 'everything's fine, just carry on as normal, don't worry about a thing' texts and emails about the takeover, so I did just that.
My last three bills from Plusnet have been way over what I normally paid to LIFE. The reason? Texts.
I used emojis and long texts with LIFE and never got charged a penny more than my normal bill. As soon as Plusnet took over, I got charged extortionate rates for emojis, any text over 140 characters and more than three texts in a row to the same number.
Naturally, I queried this rise in my bills with Plusnet. All the above was explained to me by their CS as... MMS's. According to Plusnet CS, emojis, any text over 140 characters and more than three texts in a row to the same number are automatically converted to an MMS which carries a premium rate charge.
Don't get me wrong, this is fair enough imo - providing you know about it in advance. I didn't.
And I stopped sending emojis immediately, but still got a high bill - which was down to texts over 140 characters, then was told it was due to three texts in a row to same number.
So, I'd actually - possibly - go for this deal, but atm I'm a bit miffed at Plusnet.

Was this using the default SMS app on the same handset without resetting phone to factory settings at any time?
If so, very weird.
What I will say if you decide to try 'Handcent Next SMS' is that the default settings are the same as the default SMS app (to auto-convert long messages to MMS).
To change this setting:
1. Launch 'Handcent Next SMS' and tap 'Inbox' at the top of the screen.
2. From the dropdown menu, tap 'More'.
3. Tap the 'Settings' icon.
4. Tap the 'All' tab at the top of the screen.
5. In the 'Chat' section, tap 'Send Message Settings'
6. Scroll down and untick 'Auto Convert To MMS'
7. No confirmation required, so just tap the back button until to return to the home screen
8 Alternatively tap left soft button (Samsung handsets) and tap 'Close All')
Job done!

Out about £6 a month, but have to submit monthly cashback claims.

not really the same type of deal, not a 30 day contract, have to do the cashback.
nothing wrong with plusnet, they have fixed the issues on customer service they had in December/ January, contact them quick and number ported 24 hours, up to 25Mb speeds and in our area where EE 3G signal was terrible, 4G seems always available

I confirm that you can. I called about the uSwitch deal. It expired at the time and they told me to quote this one instead. Great customer service every time I call. The switch to this tariff from the old 3G was smooth and painless. Heat added.

I'd this not a setting on the phone though, where it's the phone, rather than plusnet that turn the texts into mms? Some phones do this by default but you should be able to change it. I've known windows phones do this, and for group texts.
Alternatively, you can delete the MMS APN settings from the phone.

Good deal, this is usually only available to Plusnet broadband customers. It is a bit annoying that Plusnet seem to constantly change their offers and if you're an existing customer you may not benefit when one of these affiliate offers pops up.

This isn't just plus net that can do it and often it could be the phone that dies it, best to switch off MMS messaging, so that only text messages are sent.

I've been with Plusnet mobile for a couple of months. I double checked to see if more than one strung together text message to the same number is chargeable, as I've never been charged more. I just sent a long text message (5 texts) to a number and have not been charged for it.
Personally, it's good value on Plusnet mobile, but their customer service is pretty dire.

I did speak to Plusnet CS twice, and the second guy sounded like he was reaching for any excuse for the unexpectedly high bill. I did send the same text to three people at the same time (and was charged for it). And I have sent 3-4 texts to the same person and don't think I was charged for it.
So, tbh, I'm not THAT sure what I'm being charged for, which I reckon is slightly worse.
Edit - and tbf, the CS was quite pleasant, if not 100% certain of what was happening.

It isn't your network converting your messages to MMS... it's your phone. Try downloading a third party messaging app, such as Handcent, use that instead of your native message app and make sure to turn off "convert to MMS" in settings.
Ripperoo
19 Feb 171#32
Are you sure this is not down to the SMS app you are using?
I had a similar problem a few years back where the Samsung Galaxy S2 or S3 default messaging app was converting long text messages to MMS. Emojis were also being charged for as messages containing them were automatically converted to MMS.
AFAIK, there was no setting in the default app to change that at the time and I ended up switching to 'Handcent' (now known as 'Next SMS') and never had a problem since.
A few generations later and still using 'Next SMS' on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge without issue. Not sure if the current default app can be configured to not convert to MMS though.

I'm afraid I don't own an IOS device to give you a specific link to one but I'd imagine that pretty much any third party SMS / MMS app should have that feature.
......or if the default settings in the SMS were to blame, take some responsibility, suck it up, take it on the chin, admit that was the case and move on!
I think we're discussing a tariff thing, not sure about default settings..'in the SMS'.
