http://cdn.idigitaltimes.com/sites/idigitaltimes.com/files/2016/07/29/no-mans-sky-title.jpg

Inspired by classic science-fiction and its overwhelming sense of adventure and imagination, Hello Games presents a game of unprecedented scale and ambition. In No Man’s Sky you explore an infinite universe where you will discover unique never-before-seen planets and lifeforms.

A mystery lies at the centre of the galaxy, an irresistible pulse that draws you on an epic voyage to discover the true nature of the cosmos. Your journey will be charged with danger, encountering hostile creatures and fierce pirates; in order to survive, you will need to prepare, upgrading your ship, suit and weapons.

Whether you choose to fight, trade or explore, every decision you make has consequences, shaping your journey as you travel ever deeper into No Man's Sky.

So I picked it up and sank around 10-15hrs into it this weekend. Not as bad as I was expecting. Can see the arguments on both sides, but it seems to play very similar to other games like Terraria, Junk Jack that I have previously played and enjoyed, with the edition of 3d worlds and (limited) space flight.

Don't seem to have any problems gathering resources, and you don't seem to need that many to build a particular item. Each planet has around 5 types things to do or find (reoccurring many, many times on each), find wrecked ships, find suit upgrades, monuments and atlas stones, and small labs/abandoned buildings. Money is really easy to get once you either start farming or stand around a space station buying low/selling high for around 30mins.....

I have noticed that as I play more the planets have tended to look better and the creatures/plants get bigger and more diverse, although the range from 'actually quite nice looking' to dreadful is quite spectacular. Planets with lots of grass like cover look good but the pop-in distance is outrageous. In terms of the creatures it is actually pretty funny seeing the oddball creations. The space combat / flight however is very, very poor!

Overall good little time killer for those who haven't seen/believed/bothered reading the hype or enjoy wasting time in a huge universe in my opinion. (Again this is only my experience with the game)

How many hours did I play for in that at week Mike?

That's the reason the Steam policy is as is, it's fair and it avoids instances like with NMS where day 1 buyers are punished due to media embargoes and the developers lying or delivering a crap game.

On PC there's also the added complexity of compatibility for whatever hardware you may be running on.

More to the point, why wouldn't there be adequate protection for the customer.
Mike_HUKD to The_Hoff
5 Feb 17 #97
It's like you said, 24 hours is a reasonable return period. That's enough time to try and make sure you weren't sold a heap of junk.

What I'm criticising is the idea that you can play a game for a week and then return it. Many games you can play the full story in a week - it's detrimental to game developers if people can buy the game, play it through then return it by claiming it's not any good.

Appreciate you may not have even turned the thing on until day 6, but ultimately that's your choice.
Mike_HUKD
5 Feb 17 #95

I get what you're saying, but some games are done and over after a week of gameplay. I don't think you should play something for a week, try it out etc, then decide you don't like it and return.

A better analogy would be;
Movie anology - you were interested in the movie so you bought it and watched the first hour. However you didn't like the plot so decided to return it - you thought more could have been spent on visual effects.
Paper analogy - you didn't like the sports section so you demanded your money back after reading through the front of the paper
EmperorRosko

Well, technically you got it for £12.99. ie, paid £2.50 at the checkout, but wasted both the £2.50 and vouchers you had that you could have spent on a decent game :innocent:
darkspace100
5 Feb 17 #93
Actually no thats not the reason. The reason why people are angry is because Sean Murray straight up lied about the game saying it would have features the game didn't have like lying it had multiplayer and also the trailers were completey different to how the game looked and played.

Before release they were very active on social media hyping the game with lies and as soon as it released when people exposed all of his lies he stops respondibg for months until one day he posts from both his own twitter account and Hello game's account pretending to be hacked and then when the media made this into a big story that exploded he says something like "not hacked anymore back to work" in a very trolling way. The guy deserves to get his lights punched out.

hahaha this made me laugh cos it's pretty much bang on. I got it recently for about 20 squids and haven't played it enough to give my full opinion but I don't think it's a pile of **** yet I can see why it gets so much hate. I got it because it sounds like the game is huge and you can explore for infinity. in my little experience though every planet is unique and the same. if you love the idea of kicking the **** out of a pile of rocks while you get your **** kicked by a tiny squirrel this is the game for you

I think though that people would have been more forgiving if the price was set correctly in the first place. Agreed, not everything is done right first time but if you are charging £40+ you need to be pretty damn close to the mark of getting it right or else expect the barrage of abuse this game got. I think at this price it is worth a punt.

Movie anology - yes, if the movie didn't play correctly for you, or stuttered the whole way through.
Paper analogy - yes, if some of the print was illegible.

Will that help you sleep tonight?

Perhaps you'd also like to know about the Steam refund policy? Sure, well you have 14 hours to get a no questions refund provided you haven't clocked more than 2 hours, but in other cases even that can be bent.
callum84
3 Feb 17 3 #62
What if you bought a movie which should have been 2hrs and after watching you realised 1/2 of it was missing.

Or what if you bought a paper at full price but turned out half of it was missing as the editors couldnt be arsed.

I paid £50 digital for this POS and have never felt so cheated in my life.

No Mans Sky was biggest con of 2016.
Mike_HUKD
3 Feb 17 1 #61
How do you mean you refunded your purchase after a week playing it?

Isn't that pretty much theft?

Can I refund a movie after I watch it? Or should I bring back my paper in the evening after I've read it on the train?

My opinion (which is worth very little, granted) - Worth it at this price. About time the hate for this game was dropped. A lot of people jumped on the bandwagon and slagged off Hello Games because the media did the same. I am old enough to remember some proper steaming dog t*rd over-hyped games that have been released over my 25+ years of gaming and this is nowhere near as bad as a lot of people make out. No, it's not perfect, but it's not awful either.

Each to their own - why not take a small gamble and decide for yourself.

Heat.

Anyway, must dash, I need to get back to playing 'Plumbers Don't Wear Ties'.

Worth it. The new patch fixes some things & adds more content, and there is more promised in future. Guess it depends what you enjoy though, it's a survival game after all -one that always has a 'way out' it's literally impossible to get stuck. For that reason it's mostly relaxing, a game with no real purpose except to explore and craft.

Haha good one.

They "talked" about pushing boundaries but all we got was a mediocre exploration game that grew very boring after only a few days.

I hear the patch has improved many aspects of that though to be fair, but it should never of been a £40+ title.

I think this game should have always been Indie/Digital Game price from launch.

I think the reason it received so much bad press is down to the incredibly bad marketing, claiming to be some AAA title when it all was, was a voxel database and a clever algorithm.

Had this been around the £15.99 mark in line with other indies on the digital stores it would have received some disappointment, but not to the scale it did after customers were dropping 50 quid on it.
