MSI Radeon RX 480 Armor OC 8GB only £199.98 with Free Delivery from NovaTech.

(There are two versions of this card, this is the faster OC version, RX 480 ARMOR 8G OC)

This isn't the fastest or the most swish Radeon RX480, but it is probably the cheapest at the moment that I can find.

A not so fast 1291 Boost clock, the gaming series reaches over 1300+ but it is still more than some of the lower end RX480's.

The fans stop below 60c, and the custom cooler is much quieter that the reference design.

This has the Armor Branding, so is less in your face than the Gaming series, it does not have a back plate, or any RGB lights, but is more subtle if you don't like the Red theme.

Not in stock till the 20th February, but you can pre order

hahah I never accused you of calling me a fan boy. I'm also not like you, I haven't a clue who you are and I certainly don't black list or stalk you. If you made a comment in the past, fair enough, I don't remember and I certainly don't know what you're talking about.

So what we have is you getting your back up because you feel nvidia is being criticised (I've criticised AMD also) You resort to (in desperation) trawling through comments I've supposedly made months ago, which only further backs up what I have said.

I have not once said this is true. If I warned other of this months ago, it backs up what I am saying now, I saw it a while back, haven't looked at it since, I think it was Reddit and Youtube, as said earlier. use your head and read what I said other than trying to argue with yourself.

You began attacking me because I mentioned a rumour - stating I have no idea if it's true as I have not kept track. Rather than simply saying yes it was rebunked months ago or providing a link to the information you claim we discussed, insisting I post a link to something I said I read MONTHS ago and had not kept track of. If it is untrue (as I said it very well maybe) all of this could have been avoided if you simply tried to post facts yourself, or tried to understand what has been posted, rather than constantly attempt to manipulate the facts simply because you feel the need for conflict, which is pathetic.

Actually, you tried spreading this misinformation a couple of months ago too, remember? I pointed out how unhelpful it was to spread such speculation at a time if there wasn't even the slightest proof, I corrected you then, and I asked you for your source. Funnily enough, you couldn't produce a source back then, either - so why you're FUDding again here is beyond me.

I haven't leaped to the conclusion that you're a fanboy. You're repeatedly spreading the same misinformation, even after it's been pointed out to you that it's not correct, over a period of months. That certainly gives some indication of the kind of person you are. It doesn't matter to me if you're lying about Nvidia or AMD - I'll correct you either way. I could be wrong about your fanboyism, but that doesn't mean that correcting you is wrong - it's just that, after I corrected you, you defensively turned it into a pathetic Nvidia vs AMD battle.

Or maybe I'm wrong. Maybe you can explain to me the value in sharing something that you thought might not be true anyway - both times? I mean, look at the quotes of yourself you've just repeated - if your comment was based on basically nothing - again, both a couple of months ago, and this week - then why bother commenting in the first place? What has the point of any of your comments been?

No, I thought not. Please, just retort with another overly-defensive personal attack, if that's all you can manage. All else being equal, I prefer AMD to Nvidia (see my profile, for example), but it's not like you've let facts get in the way of your comments previously. :man:

16 Feb 17 #53
Hahahah, you're pathetic, hahah. I didn't say it was definite. LOOK at my original post, I stated it was a while ago and I haven't kept check on it. I was on my mobile at the time so didn't have the means, or the time, to look in depth. I thought I would point it out, if someone more knowledgeable was reading they were there to correct (as happened). I intended to come back and correct (which I did) when I had the time.

And on "you've now admitted that you're spreading misinformation across the Internet". Get a life, I clearly stated

"Not saying this is true, but there was speculation"
"Never really heard anything since so must have been a bug in driver or something to that affect"

Stop Taking every criticism of Nvidia as if it is an attack on your life. I own an Nvidia card, are we bros now? I'm in your clan

15 Feb 17 #50
Rather than edit, I've posted again so it stands out.

I've just done a quick check and 1st post I have come across is something similar, but the first reply is a post stating that this has cropped up before and been debunked - like I said, I haven't checked it since, just something I heard a while back.

Try not to be so defensive / fanboyish

Then again, there was a lot of in depth talk in the discussion I was reading, but it would be publicised by now if true
BetaRomeo to eiamhere69
16 Feb 17 1 #52
Errr... you've now admitted that you're spreading misinformation across the Internet (thank you for finally owning up to it).

But someone pointing out that you're wrong - again, as you've now admitted - is "defensive / fanboyish"?

Being wrong is being wrong, there's no two ways about it, and from what you have said, it was absolutely, utterly, indisputably pointless for you to bring it up at all, as there was no issue to begin with. By saying that people correcting your mistake are fanboys, I'm afraid that you're the one that comes across as a fanboy, mate.

But I'd still like to see the original source, if you happen to have a link? My search only revealed sources that would be unbelievably stupid to cite.

I bought my 1st Nvidia card (Palit GTX 1060 6GB) for the 1st time since an old AGP 6800 (many ATi cards after that) and I'm chuffed with playing DOOM at over 100 FPS with Gsync with almost zero fan noise;)
eiamhere69
15 Feb 17 #49
Haha, grow up, I don't support Nvidia OR AMD, just my wallet. Don't take things so personally, you don't own Nvidia.

I'm sure it was Reddit and Youtube, where people had picked up on differences during a review. Like I said, I haven't heard anything since (it would be all over if it were true, although it would be difficult to prove it was intentional)

Basically side by side comparisons of games running, same settings. The Nvidia counterpart was noticeably lower quality textures and washed out colours. People where initially trying to determine whether it was simply a bug, then you have the veterans come forth and bring up the history of Nvidia (AMD have pulled the same at times too) rendering games at reduced settings or lower textures and other tactics to score a win.

AMD stinks - make you feel any better?
BetaRomeo
15 Feb 17 #48
Well, that's not incorrect... but I wasn't specifically (or only) talking about delta colour compression. It's Nvidia's overall memory management that allows them to use their VRAM more effectively than AMD, and these results are borne out in practice. Here's a good example (using 2GB/4GB cards to ensure the VRAM quantity is being stressed, as well as having like-for-like quantities so you can see how Nvidia's and AMD's solutions compare). The delta color compression may prevent the 128-bit memory interface from being as crippling as one might suspect, but that doesn't explain the way the 2GB 960s consistently avoided the stuttering that we saw at the same detail levels on a 2GB 380.

(I haven't seen an article do this for Pascal/Polaris yet, although it would be trickier this generation... it would have to be the 460 and 1050 Ti to do a like-for-like comparison. I've just had a quick look around, and can't see one - which is a shame, as real-world results are always worth far more than tech speak.)

Yikes... this comment makes my head hurt. If you have evidence to support this "speculation", please do share - I'd be very interested to read it myself. But if you're correct, and it's pure speculation with nothing to back it up, what the hell was the point of sharing something so insubstantial? There's been speculation that AMD uses child labour, for example, but it would be ludicrous to go around spreading that rumour on sites discussing graphics cards without any evidence.

Unless... are you referring to the 3DMark incident in 2003?!?! Both NVIDIA and ATi were accused - and guilty - there! But that's hardly "speculation", of course.
ElRobinio
15 Feb 17 #46
Pascal does seem to have the better colour compression of the two, that only improves memory bandwidth and has no effect on the amount of vram used - http://www.anandtech.com/show/10325/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-and-1070-founders-edition-review/8

Not saying this is true, but there was speculation a couple month back that Nvidia image quality was also worse than AMD. Never really heard anything since so must have been a bug in driver or something to that affect

That's not quite how VRAM works. Games will often copy more data into VRAM than they will necessarily use, so a VRAM usage of 5GB doesn't necessarily mean that the game's performance would be any different on an otherwise-identical 4GB card. (Here, this demonstrates it in practice. "Dying Light consumed up to 3.5GBs of VRAM when there was enough at its disposal and yet there was no performance difference between 2GB and 4GB graphics cards.")

It's also worth noting that Nvidia have more effective memory compression than AMD, so the difference in VRAM between a 6GB 1060 and an 8GB 480 is smaller than the numbers suggest. Choosing an 8GB 480 over a 6GB 1060 based purely on the VRAM quantity does not make sense.

I'm in the excellent position of wanting to upgrade my GPU but not really being in a rush to do so. I'm thinking that I'll wait and see what Vega has to offer. From what I've read (Briefly), the Vega cards will compete with GTX 1080's. At what price though? Hopefully their arrival drives prices down more.

On the other hand if you need one now, this is a hot deal

I bought an i5 with 8gb ram and 128gb ssd a few years ago as a future proof machine for browsing the web and streaming the odd ppv

If I was to add this card will it play every game at 1080p / 60fps locked?

Currently happily gaming on ps3, but the new eve fps is due for release on pc only in the next year or so, and want to have a machine ready for it.
satchef1 to shoryuken
14 Feb 17 #38
It won't play every game on maximum settings at 1080p and 60fps. But you'll be able to max out many games, and play pretty much every one on a mix of high/very high/ultra.

I built a machine at Christmas with this GPU, 8GB of RAM and an i5 2400. I can't grumble.

That is a very interesting review. I have been deciding between the Asus Dual 1060 GTX (£60 more) and the Asus Strix 1060 (£100 more) and i really cant bring myself around paying that much more for a card when this is at sub £200. the ONLY thing is putting me off this card is MSI. I have had a bad run of luck with them and always preferred Asus. Still tempting...
Marekj to ElRobinio

Impressive. The 1060 was clearly the better performer on release, but the 480 seems to have clawed back virtually all of the performance disadvantage, and more, it seems.

AMD card clearly beats Nvidia competition, despite half of games or more are being intentionally crippled to run slower on AMD cards. 1060 is a sick animal that needs all the help it can get. Also 1060 will never have 8GB of Vram.

Project Cars runs ALOT better on Nvidia cards, don't think it's a Gameworks title, not even entirely sure it's "sponsored" by Nvidia. It's well known it runs alot worse (probably amongst the worse) on AMD.

Oddly enough one of my mates just got a 1070 and said playing Gears 4 took just over 5GB ram. Im thinking the RX480 is a better choice over the 1060 for that alone (and from what you said too). Now, to find a Asus card on offer

Ah, that's why you didn't get the £210 6GB 1060 last week - it was an MSI card. (One would make back the extra tenner over this 480 on power draw over two years anyway!)

It's a shame that the Nvidia game promotion doesn't extend to the 1060 cards, as that would make it an easier decision! I think I'd spend the extra tenner on the 1060, even though its performance lead is smaller today, as it has the far, far lower power draw, and the benefit of working well with SteamOS (should I ever decide to put together a Steam Machine for some reason!) and other OSes - not to mention that it doesn't mind being paired with a weaker CPU, so I can stick it in any old spare PC when I replace it.

Although if that Civ VI promotion was still running for AMD cards... that would probably sway me the other way. Very close at these prices.

Similar, but slightly different results here, too. (Also nice to see the 290X continue to improve.)

It seems that Nvidia are regressing to the 90s with their drivers - the days in which we didn't just grab the latest driver, but researched and picked the one with the best performance for our particular needs. If they're going to insist on having their customers' email addresses, they could at least do them the courtesy of making sure their best driver is the one with the highest number. :stuck_out_tongue:

I managed to get the MSI 1060 armor OC £210 about a month after release, glad I got it but wish I'd found the rx480 for the same price at the time. Everything runs fine, although Titanfall2 will max out the video memory at insane texture levels, as will the CODs, so I'd prefer to have the 8GB ram and freesync.

'Almost' the same? Well, I rather think that twice the memory is a major difference: one is for those who want to spend little but are willing to accept that eventually with 'just' 4GB they'll have to turn the settings down or forsake ultra texture packs (the most visible difference on PC ports of games designed for the current consoles); this 8GB one is for those who think having 8GB will most likely mean their card will last a bit longer. Which is not an unreasonable choice as a lot of cards have often run out of memory long before they've run out of grunt (more so on the Nvidia side since NV love to plan a little built-in obsolescence and have the marketshare and fan base to get away with it).
