Looks like you're on your own with never having a bag split. Every hoover I have ever owned prior to buying the first DYSON all split at some point. Even the cheap Vax that I bought just for the car would split it's bag now and then. Not every bag but when you have one go you wish you had a tank instead of a bag. Only decent bags I found so far for my aquavac are polyester. Much much better than a stupid paper bag. Far stronger and no issues with suction. Strong suction coupled with paper bag = risk of punctured bag at some point.

These were £20 in Tesco last year, clearance item as they do not comply with the new EU regs. I bought 4 and still have 3 "spares" in the attic. Very good vacuum cleaner. Miele always come top in the Which ratings.

What, it has a bag in 2017. Have they not heard of cyclonic no loss of suction. Anyone can make these now as it would appear Mr Dyson no longer has the monopoly of the concept. Please don't tell me it's a paper bag which split as soon as you suck up something sharp.

5 bags and a filter for around £6 delivered on ebay. i empty out and reuse the bags too. a pack lasts years.
With the amount of crap that I have to hoover up every day, the bags don't last long, so it's not exactly cheap.

Never had a hoover bag split on me. Certainly not in the years I've owned Miele hoovers with either Miele or 3rd party bags.
I have this hoover in yellow and it performs very well.

Yes, I know you get better suction with an old bag. I have a Goblin that sucks very well. All true, it's an aquavac that I keep in the garage but I managed to find some excellent microfibre bags, not paper so great for small bits of rubble etc. Bagged hoovers cause a terrible mess when the bag splits and trying to clean the paper filter after it does is a nightmare. Personally though I prefer an upright.
Suction though does come down to motor and air watts. I have a DC07 and Shark. The Shark's suction is too good and you certainly know when you have done the house with it. Dyson is easy to push around but wife knows when I have used the Shark.

Ah, but bagless hoovers have worse, but fairly constant suction, these bagged hoovers have higher suction, but it drops whilst the bag fills. Generally it's the bagged that do better in Which? reviews, and Miele are a top vacuum cleaner brand (2nd most reliable cylinder brand behind Numatic (Henry/Henrietta), 2nd most upright cleaner brand).
