I have owned one of these for 18 months and have to say it is very good (screen is particularly clear) but this is very old tech now and 16gb of internal storage makes it very difficult to keep up to date - personally I would spend a little more and get something with a better spec - at least 32gb of internal memory and 2gb of RAM.

PS: Does anybody know whether it is possible to install Android like on the 7" version? That would probably be a more useful OS.

Indeed. While the price is right, there are two problems with this tablet: the CPU is quite weak, and 1 GB of RAM is no longer sufficient for recent versions of Windows 10. So you may struggle to even run updates on this, certainly once you actually install a program or two.

For specific use cases this is still useful, but as a general Windows tablet not so much. (Oh, and the Windows app store for tablets is really barren, none of my top apps are in there, all the Google apps are missing, even Skype is quite limited.)

Nicely done. Obviously using images avoids all the faff looking for drivers etc, but you've at least shown the reinstall suggestion works.

If you want to be a real hero now, upload an image of your working system, so that others can get to that point more easily!

Yeah I dont mind doing a full reinstall but i heard the correct drivers are nigh on impossible to get hold of so I am trying to figure the best way to back the drivers up - dont really do that much. Ideally a revery disk/image for the 32gb version would be good. I have created a macrium backup (with usb otg) but then the recovery usb has to accomodate the image too. Well either way it's a bit lame by tesco. They may end up going back if i cant be bothered going through the reinstall. Thanks for the info much appreciated

I'm still checking this but this is what I done to get back the full 32gb instead of the 16gb imaged drive.
(Obvioulsy this is for the 32gb versions that only show 16gb (check with diskpart first - should show 29gb .....cmd --> diskpart --> list disk)

ONLY DO THIS IF YOU CAN RECOVER SAFELY BACK TO WHERE YOU WERE BEFORE YOU ATTEMPTED THIS - OTHERWISE DO NOT

Needed or at least what I used
a - USB Stick (to install windows - 8gb to be safe)
b-OTG cable - to give the micro usb charging port an extended usbsocket for the windows USB stick)
c-Keyboard (obvioulsy a usb keyboard won't work as there are no ports and the one you are using is for the usb stick though i never tried a usb hub into the usb otg they are low power items so might work)

1)I logged into the tablet, and copied the folder "DriverStore" at C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore to external drive
This I believe contained all my drivers.

2)Downloaded official ISO (untick to make x86 only) from microsoft and using rufus to make a bootagle USB i tihnk you couold just get windows tool to make the usb
3) I re-installed windows x86 with the USB pressing F7 (with Fn button) during boot
3b) deleting partitions reveals the full 32gb
4) Installed windows you might have to do this on your side as screen was in portrait mode lol
5) After windws has booted - You might not need to do this but I restarted using Setttings -> Update&Security ->Recovery ->Advance StartUp(restart now) ->Troubleshooting -> More Advance Start up - and chose option 7 to enable unsigned driver signing
6)Booted into windows copied folder "DriverStore" to the desktop
6b) Stay disconnected from the internet as it stops random/wrong driver files being installed
7)Went to device manager and anything that needed drivers ie "Unknown" double clicked on it and chose update driver .....from computer .....and pointed at the desktop folder "DriverStore" (driver installed)
8)Did this several times (Though you dont need to keep pointing the folder as it remembers last folder)
9) After it looked like a had done them all i had to reboot and more unknown showed up so had to continue to install drivers (might have had to reboot a coupel fo times but just keep checking device manager till all drivers are installed (by not seeing any exlmation or question marks next to the items.

SO FAR looking good....Only do this though if you have enough of a backup to get back to where you were before as i'm still testing this.

thanks! it worked! i remember reading something like this before as i found info on this site about keyboards, but thought that the little metal balls in the centre were the magnets, rather than hidden inside, and i didn't think it sounded right as i thought it would be changing the connecting pins carrying data and power, but i see that inside there are 3 magnets on each side and it appears the magnets were the wrong way round meaning the magnetic polarity (or whatever it's called) was pushing the tablet away rather than pulling it towards the case. so pulling out the magnets and letting them stick to the tablet showed the right way round and they just then slipped back into the same slots and it worked first time i put it in. i might stick a tiny touch of superglue just to be sure

i've got it plugged into power right now, but on the basis the magnets keep attached properly it should hold the table in place from falling out when the case is folded, but i suppose care is required as it founds round the long sides of the case but theres nothing on the short ends to stop it dropping out if the magnets don't hold it in place. a large rubber band may help. i'd usually stick mine in the back slot of a courier bag so this wouldn't be a huge issue

it's actually a great little cheap tablet/netbook with the keyboard

thanks for your comments!

You have to open the keyboard and change the orientation of one of the magnets. I found this on the web...

I bought the same dock and managed to modify it to fix it to work with the Connect 9 - guess they put the magnets in it the wrong way round in the factory! It was easy enough to modify the dock to compensate.

Just pry the black plastic section on the left of the dock connector, starting at the far left end, using a blunt table knife just slide it just under the edge on the left hand side, slide it along a little and not too deep as there are plastic clips you could snap off. Don't push it in too hard or far, just enough to get it under and just twist it gently to pry up the plastic casing left of the dock connector. You only need to go a little way along. Lift the plastic up gently using the knife and the magnets will drop straight out. You don't need to completely remove the plastic cover, just pry it up from the left toward the centre connector pins and lift it a little - you don't need to pull it right off. There are 3 magnets in total, 2 smaller ones and one longer one.

Try placing them on the left bottom side of the tablet to get them into the right orientation and carefully take them off keeping the right orientation and slip them back inside the casing. If you haven't mashed it all up with the knife you should be able to clearly see where they go. The smaller magnets go toward the left end, the longer one goes toward the centre where the connector is.

When you're done, you should be able to click the black plastic casing back down. If you haven't broken it by jamming the knife in too far it should all click and seal back into place without any problem. If not and you've managed to break any of the clips a little superglue would do the job. I was careful with it and managed it first time.

i got one the other week when it was £13. it does work, but the magnetic connection on the side doesn't hold in place properly on it's own when using the connect 9. you have to hold the tablet to keep it pushed down, or perhaps duct tape it at the back (which i haven't tried yet, but will). when it was connected (pushed down) it worked fine. it's just a shame it didn't "click" into place. it's because it's held in place by magnets and it's not strong enough on the left side. when i originally looked for that keyboard it was £30 on the tesco site, but it looked a better option than other keyboards as it didn't need USB or to be charged up for bluetooth

if anyone else has one working with a connect 9 and has figured a way to hold it in place, please let me know

If DiskPart sees 29GB then that's definitely what's happened, and also probably solves the mystery of how my 2 ended up the way they were - Tesco Outlet refurbishers not bothering to create different images for different tablets.

In my case reimaging was fairly easy, as I had access to a fully working example of the exact same tablet. From that point it's simply a matter of creating a full disk image of the working tablet and then transferring that image to the faulty machines. So if anyone has a working model and can upload the images (a 4-5GB file though), you'd be sorted.

Failing that, you'd need to look into whether the manufacturer supplies recovery images.

I guess maybe the easiest way in theory could be to boot up from a Windows 10 install USB and then reinstall Windows from scratch in the hope that the Windows installer will repartition the entirety of the available drive space. I haven't done this myself so I'm not sure that it would work, but I can't see any reason why it shouldn't. If you do go down that road though, make sure to extract all your drivers before doing anything else, as they can be a pain to find later on!

BTW, how are you down a tablet? Surely you'll just get a full refund/replacement for the missing one?

I am genuinely curious now how many 32GB tablets are being sold as having half the storage because Tesco couldn't be bothered to use the right images... Some bargains to be had there!

Bit of a long shot, but I've previously seen this with used tablets (also Connects from Tesco, as it happens, albeit the 7-inch models). In that instance, two Connect tablets were incorrectly reimaged with a ROM from a completely different 16GB tablet (a Toshiba, I think), and as a result even Disk Management was unable to "see" beyond 16GB.

(IIRC. the only way to confirm that a 32GB disk was actually present was to run DISKPART from the command prompt. The command LIST DISK would then report the full size of the disk.)

In the end I reimaged both tablets with the correct system for the tablet, and regained my full 32GB, so something similar might have happened here (although I doubt it!)

Item number 162371615525 for keyboard

Keyboard arrived well packaged and early - i tested it with the tablet and it works well all be it the member below is correct it is slightly too largefor an 8.9 though does connect - It's an international/US keyboard - Speechmark button swapped with hashtag - not UK) but ok cheap working keyboard.- Edit Also thanks to the member popoya below who was right that 1 or 2 magnets might need to be swapped to lock into the tablet firmly
Tablets arrived later, packaging fully ripped, and 32gb box had 16gb tablets AND one tablet missing. - Guess who the national retailer was and who the smaller business was? I know Tesco are slipping in retail but this wont get better lol

Guys dont worry even the official tesco buy was dodgy - THIS IS A TESCO BUY - Hahahahah the parcel also arrived ripped as the delivery guy even mentioned it to me. I didnt have much hope then. Was a Bit harsh at tesco - yes mine just arrived Supposed to be 3x 32gb they swapped them out for 16gb versions!!!! hahaha.(might have been wrong) see further below message

You can confirm by holding bottom left on windows logo and clicking on disk management. I suppose £73.98 for 3 16gb versions at £24.66 each isnt bad but the common filthy chav way of blagging people out of the 32gb version is wrong...mine are going back, i'm all about the principle. hahahaha in fact ive just opened the last one and there was nothing IN IT !!!!!
hahahahahaha.2 for 3 more like. No decency.
OK they might be 32gb see below but I'm out one as the packaging was ripped fully so maybe just badly wrapped

mine have turned up - and despite buying 3x 32gb ones. Each of them state I have used around 8-9gb of a possible 13.7gb (so only have around 5gb left) surely the extra 18gb can't be hidden and used for the operating system etc as it states the storage that's already been used (out of my 13.7gb quota) is partly used up (8.37gb) by 'system and reserved' which means unusable storage would be using 26gb...... surely that's not right is it? Has anyone else got this? The boxes state they are 32gb (Just for information one was grade A, 2 were grade B, but they were all in great condition and they still seem pretty good for the money)

They usually want you to try & resolve problems with the seller first - so they don't normally allow you to open a case for three days in the PayPal resolution centre (or 8 days via eBay). It's different here because it looks like the sellers account has been compromised so you shouldn't contact the seller. Probably best to wait a few days to see if they sort it out or phone them up if your worried. The few times I've needed to contact PayPal customer services they've been very good.

Whatever happened to ebay's buyer protection? Looks like I have just lost 15GBP. Tried to open a case and got this message "We're sorry, there's an issue with this purchase. Unfortunately, PayPal reports that we can't open a case for this item. You can try to sort out this problem by contacting the seller."

Update: Managed to get a refund by contacting PayPal through their online messaging system. eBay was no help at all. I knew the deal was too good to be true, but thought the worse that could happen was that the seller would cancel the sale. Didn't realize eBay just basically abandons buyers if a seller's account has been hacked.

So anyone dual boot android much with these?

15 Feb 17 #31
Well, it's Android for starters and 32GB on-board.

15 Feb 17 11 #2
I have owned one of these for 18 months and have to say it is very good (screen is particularly clear) but this is very old tech now and 16gb of internal storage makes it very difficult to keep up to date - personally I would spend a little more and get something with a better spec - at least 32gb of internal memory and 2gb of RAM.

if you've owned one, can you tell me if you found a bespoke cover for it with camera hole? i've already wasted one trying to drill ahole to suit... bloody annoying that there doesn't seem to be one that i can find except generics...

Yes, I am as stunned as you it took 23 posts before someone mentioned it - I would've put money on some prat saying it within 2-3, like so:

The 32gb one doesn't come with charger, anyone know what you use to charge it? I'm hoping it's micro USB as I have millions if those!

Don't a lot of Metro apps (or Windows Store apps or UWP apps or whatever the kids are branded these days) require 1366x768?

Had an Acer tablet a few years back and I wouldn't touch Windows again (crépe pun intended), but then it is dirt cheap.

I'd be very surprised if Viglin are really making these, Its more likely to be some Chinese outfit branding them how the customer requests....

I understand that, but the manufacturer is sometimes different from the branding. In this case the branding is Connect but the manufacturer is Viglen, though the tablet is an exact copy of Linx.

See here to see the manufacturer and branding:
