Maneki-neko: is a common Japanese figurine (lucky charm, talisman) which is often believed to bring good luck to the owner.
Reduced to clear at £0.75; these must have been stocked for Chinese new year. Found at Feltham Tesco & there were quite a few in stock.
P.S. It is solar powered.

I've got one sitting waving at me, well technically beckoning at me, on top of my monitor right now. Can't say it's attracted a huge amount of luck so far though.

It is very popular in Chinese people as a luck-charm, & it's used as a gift for Chinese new year. It is often mistaken as a Chinese lucky charm

Because traditional Japanese new year is celebrated on the same day as Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese new year. That said I'm not sure sure if maneki-neko are associated with Japanese new year, but hey ho they are still a fun thing.

There's lots of myths and traditions surrounding maneki-neko with lot's of different competing ideas as to why a beckoning cat is supposed to bring luck, and you're right they are often placed at the doorway of of business establishments to bring customers, and hence luck and good fortune.
