My friend has has these for years. Not once pulled over. Don't think the police will stop you for these In your wheels. Hell they don't even stop the cyclists who have their main light on max turbo flash mod...

I'd argue that these are a lot safer than full on flashing halogen lights that some cyclists have that blind the **** out of you.

As they are metal, just be careful they don't corrode and become stuck to your valves. Same thing is common with similar after market valve caps for car and motorbike tyres and can mean an expensive replacement / repair.

Had no idea , bought similar to these for my husbands bike a couple of years ago which he uses for commuting each day. It means cars can see him from the side view in the dark as back/front lights don't cover this so well. As he went through the side window of someone's car a few years ago ( their fault ) they seemed a good extra precaution.
Why are they illegal?

Almost total rubbish - the green and blue versions are illegal on UK roads as they are for emergency vehicles, the flashing argument is non-sense and made-up when you look at the details
The other colours are okay and as they don't direct light forward or backwards they cannot be a nuisance to other road users. Yes they are a little gimmicky and questionable taste but most of the colours are not illegal. The argument of flashing lights does not apply unless you are a nimby and over-do political correctness (but you have no friends so does not matter).
Cashback too, if you are safety conscious its an option, personally I have a couple of 3M reflector sleeves on the spokes

These are really hard to judge how tight to put them, too much and the tyres go flat, not enough and you worry they'll come loose. Ended up removing them from my sons bike, they just caused more hassle than they are worth.
Good price though. Think i paid £2 each, but they did come with batteries.

some years ago I bought some motorbike accessories and for a few quid extra I got some blue alloy dust caps which looked great on my bike. within three days the local scroats had knicked them off my bike outside work :-(
It really is the case that some people will knick anything not nailed down.

Check this video, towards the end they show off these lights. They would be brighter in the real world due to the auto iso levels of the camera.
For £1.50 (batteries from £1land) these aren't bad to have for added awareness from the side view.

Blinding other road users is illegal. "Used so as to cause undue dazzle or discomfort to other persons using the road." that covers front and rear fog lights on cars and any light on a bike (or a pedestrian/equestrian using a headtorch).
Looking at these lights I have my doubts about how much I really want them on my bike. Tempted after a motorist decided to turn left while overtaking me recently (I think she'd just forgotten she was overtaking! Luckily her passenger alerted her before we collided) but in that instance although they'd make me more visible from the side they would've been too low to for her to see.
I'll stick with 2 lights each at front and rear (one fixed, one flashing). One of my front lights is capable of lighting up an unlit cyclepath, but it's pointed downwards and on a dimmer setting on the road - so shouldn't be dazzling anybody.
For anybody considering putting these lights on a car or motorbike. As well as the questionable legality, they are also apparently prone to ripping the valve off with disastrous consequences.

Blinding drivers and pedestrians should be classed as dangerous and should be banned.
Not all bike lights are bright and flash fast. But there is one cyclist that goes through my town centre every afternoon and it's like a rave party going on.
I'm a cyclist myself, and even I class that as dangerous.
Back to wheel lights.
The second topic we will consider are ‘monkey lights’. Monkey lights are lights which attach to the wheels or spokes of a cycle and are described by one manufacturer as not “just a fun, practical bike light” but “also a cutting edge digital art platform”. Although multiple reviews and tests have shown that these products do a noticeable job in improving cyclist visibility, with many stating that motorists made an obvious attempt to give them more room, their legality is questionable. In theory, if any of these products emitted light forwards or backwards then that light must be white or red respectively as they are unarguably fixed to the bike. http://www.cyclelaw.co.uk/legality-of-cycle-lighting-accessories
