Can I ask a daft question? I understand that some people don't want secondhand cars. But if you keep the mini you have, it won't be secondhand. It's a great car, with loads of equipment, and low mileage. The worst of its depreciation is over, and it's not going to cost a lot in servicing. So, the daft question is simply, why not keep the mini?

Have the prices changed on this since the deal was posted? Someone mentioned you could make a saving my paying the larger upfront amount but when I work it out the 3, 6, 9 and 12 months all work out to cost almost the same over the 2 years.

Just ordered mine and it is due from factory to dealership on 27th Feb. Went for 2 year at £167 which means only one service to pay for. Take off the better fuel economy from my petrol freelander and no road tax to pay (which costs me about £25/month) it is going to cost me about £82 a month including breakdown cover. No brainer for a brand new car. Happy days good find and thank you.

Sort of although it would be like seeing a picture of a juicy burger with bacon, avocado and a fried egg (and a little flag on top) and then finding that it's just a plain ol' burger with a slice of plastic cheese if you're lucky! Speaking of which... I'm hungry for lunch...

Bit of a silly reply really, there are lots of arguments over whether buy new or s/h, most of which folk will never agree on. I too do most of my own car repairs but some of my mates wouldn't know how to change a thermostat or a dizzy cap let alone anything difficult. I don't go down the lease or contract hire route as i think its a lot of money to spend on a couple of years transport and I wont buy new because of the depreciation. Having said that, if I was wealthy enough the depreciation would be negligent so I would then buy new.. I think its all to do with individual budget really.
trizinger28
8 Feb 17 1 #138
No disrespect intended, but you do know that the "new one" from the factory will almost certainly be a car that has been sitting in a car yard for about 6 months since being sold..

118luke, The car industry would collapse if we all kept hold of our cars until they fell apart then buying a new one would cost thousands more as they try to recoup their R&D costs by increasing the purchase price due to lack of sales.

How did you write your reply? On a reallly old but perfectly operable computer or a new tablet or phone? If you want to reduce your carbon foot print I suggest that you let you tablet or phone battery die and stop writing such garbage.

Not most - all. Manufacturers are legally obliged to quote only the MPGs achieved in ECDC tests. Cars will never actually achieve those MPGs in real use, as ECDC tests are conducted using the very best fuels, usually Shell V-Power Nitro+ petrol/diesel, so if you run on a lesser fuel you will get a worse result.
Harley.Roadking
4 Feb 17 #132
I was just stating what the manufacturers claim. Looking at reviews, most drivers struggle to get any where near the claimed 68mpg though. I think that is down hill with the wind behind you.

It is maintained on schedule but with the liw mileage ut was a time based service, free because I also have 5 year mini care pack. the MOT is not a problem, it's just that at the liw mileage I would get the best price now compared to keeping it for a few more years. also the warranty will have run out so any repairs at at a cost to me.

£166.36 x 24 (rental multiplied by 24 months) + £998.16 (initial rental) is almost exactly £5000. There is a £198 processing fee on top of that which was why I stated "just over £5000".

While new cars are indeed cleaner, you'll find that the manufacture of a new car uses vast amounts of energy and resource.
Even recycling your old car isn't 100% efficient, some components cannot be recycled.

Please have a read of this to explain it better than I can:

This doesn't stand up to any logical analysis. If people are replacing cars with more modern cleaner ones, then surely that's a good thing? There must be a reason a forward thinking nation like Singapore forces cars older than 3 years off the road (though I suspect there's some recycling going on).

Small point. But for info the leasing company do not own the vehicle. They are just brokers/agents for massive finance company's like Hitachi Capital and Lex.

My next car and first lease deal coming from Nationwide. My other half already has her car from there.

Shame some people don't get the up front payment. It actually works in your favour. I'm putting down £5k to reduce interest via monthly payments. Just amortise over the rental period for the true monthly cost for comparison.

I'm getting a new BMW with maintenance for £300 pm less all in than a PCP with a dealer. And that includes maintenance rather than the risk of unexpected bills with a PCP.

To get down to the price I'm paying buying my own car outright I'd need to buy a 2 years old.

I do all my comparisons based on an all in monthly total cost of ownership.

If for some reason you are in the market for a diesel then lease is the only safe option. Apart from the reliability issues (DPF and DMF) the resale values of diesels are set to drop like a stone as people wake up to the fact CO2 was never the problem - it's all about particulates, they are the "child killers" and that's why it could well be impossible to use even Euro6 diesels in many UK cities in a few years time.

I've had a similar experience. My last few cars I have purchased have been 3 year old ones that have come fresh out of a lease (generally from BCA auctions, :- leaseplan, blackhorse etc. I tend to keep them for two years, by that point their 5 years old. Approx depreciation is only 10%.

As it happens, I tend towards older Hondas with FSH, usually after strategic servicing milestones...
Minimal servicing, great reliability, amazing resale value even 2-3 years later.

I would strongly suggest this strategy to anyone looking to effectively pay <£50 per month for a car all-in, excluding fuel/insurance/etc.
Bilbo1968

Really? I thought I was on the wrong site for a minute - nobody cares.
ezzer72
2 Feb 17 2 #91
If you have lost nothing at all on your last 3 cars, you are clearly driving scrappers - I was assuming you meant you buy 3 year old cars, and that they don't depreciate any more at that point. You do realise that as new cars are brought out they are safer than the model before? Do you think it's right to put a price on you or your family's lives?

I love the 'if you know anything about cars you can avoid problems' - unless you are buying very sensible stuff like older Toyotas or older Hondas you couldn't possibly avoid unforeseen problems on most used cars. You'll usually have several problems with a BRAND NEW French or German car, so picking a 'safe' used one is some achievement...

And whilst I am fully aware that tyres wear on new cars too, if you change your car every two or three years, and are doing sensible annual miles, you won't be buying many.

centaurandrew
2 Feb 17 #88
Yep - my last three cars have sold for essentially the same price as I paid, inflation adjusted.

And I do my own work on cars sunshine :smirk:, although if you know anything about cars you can usually pick the ones that won't need too much work doing on them. Tyres? They wear the same on a new car as a second hand, if the car is properly maintained - and in any case - plenty of part worns around.

Sorry to render all your points invalid - but it's an interesting insight into the risk averse reasoning of people who buy new cars. Like I said keep spending the money!
Sp0oner
2 Feb 17 #87
True and a point i'd overlooked. I'm certain they will still try it on at the end of the 2 years as i've been told I will be offered the car to buy but i'm expecting a way over the top valuation. Bearing in mind how well that deal went they are going to be getting back a hell of a lot of cars in a short space of time that they will need to shift if they can't get people to extend their deals.

Zero depreciation? You think?

And can I in turn thank you for paying to keep mechanics/technicians in jobs each time your out of warranty car develops a fault, keeping Kwik Fit and co in business replacing those worn out tyres, and of course for adding to the UK's economy with all of that lovely VAT that will be added to each and every bill.

Of course you can, naturally I knew this. Obviously if you had paid a larger deposit though, the monthly rentals would have been less (around £187 if you had paid £1,000 up front, give or take).

What car is it? You'd be surprised what they will accept as W&T on alloys. I had a Golf R that went back recently. My other half had kerbed those low profile wheels beyond belief. Being diamond cut I was looking at £120 per wheel plus. VWFS took it back and charged £36 a wheel. Bargain.
barbiegirl
2 Feb 17 1 #78
To be fair, my current VWFS lease deal was £50 down, £214 pcm on a 36 month 6k basis. So you can get leases with little to no deposit. It's about the total cost over the term and how you want to break it down really.
monkeyhanger75
2 Feb 17 1 #77
You might be financing £5k capital lost in depreciation, but you're also paying interest on £15k at the start of the PCP, dropping to £10k at the end - that will probably cost you £250-300 a month depending on interest rate.
docefc
2 Feb 17 #76
Great deal for this car. I am coming to the end of my first ever lease car now and while it has been great, I am not the best at keeping things spic and span, so probably won't lease again. I've dinged the alloys a couple of times and it was keyed from one end to the other when I first got it, in all it's going to cost me roughly £800 to fix it all back and I still don't know whether they will okay the condition upon return. In future I will buy a used car and put £80 a month in an account towards repairs.

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't thought about the loss of the £5k. What car(s) would you have in mind if you were in my position. I am leaning towards getting a loan for the 16k. Leg room and head height were the mains draw for this car and the build equality was a big step up from my Hyundai and a nice smooth drive. I'm no engine connoisseur as you can tell. So the height legroom build quality and cabin space were main draw. We are a very tall family 6'plus. Happy to be drawn away from the Merc badge. But don't want to miss it. It's longest I've owned a car and and still enjoyed it. The Hyundai Santa Fe and ford galaxy before that had me longing after 6 months. But these cats offered the cabin space I needed for the right price.

I'll help the best that I can.

If the car is indeed worth £21k, and the 'balloon' is just £16k, then obviously don't hand it back as you would be throwing £5,000 away.

If you love the car as much as you do, I would take out a loan for £16,000 to pay off the balloon and keep it. Again, if it's currently worth £21,000, you have time on your side to decide what to do in the longer term - you may just keep it 6 more months, or another year, and should still be able to sell it for enough to settle the loan, and even have a bit of change.

This said, £5,000 is quite a healthy deposit towards a new car, so as you say you have that option too. There are cars out there as good as the Merc, and indeed better in some respects that will cost less because they don't have a Merc badge on, so be sure to go and have a proper look and do some test drives rather than just heading straight for the badge.

2 Feb 17 #69
How do you get to 5000? . I've tried a few different ways
MrShed
2 Feb 17 #68
Couldnt disagree more.

Lease = covering depreciation of car plus a bit of profit.
PCP = effectively covering depreciation of car plus a bit of profit, plus interest on the capital.

The interest on the capital is a hugely differentiating factor - if the start price is the same on both, its effectively going to add approximately 15% per annum to the cost of PCP compared to a lease assuming average depreciation rates, and 5% APR. And bear in mind that at the end of the lease, I could go and buy the same make/model/mileage/age of car, just not the same individual car, for around the same as the GFV. So you are basically paying money for nothing.

Agree that on paper PCP is more flexible in terms of options (if contract terms are the same, which isnt usually the case) but they arent basically the "same" product.

The differentiator for PCPs is that as they are more pushed by the garages you may be able to negotiate a better deal or certainly get a better deposit incentive up front - although again you could argue that these discounts are factored into the good leasing deals.

Can I ask a question not totally related to the deal as there seem to be lots of leasing experts here. I have a few weeks to decide on whether to give back a 2012 M-class Merc (nearly 50k on clock) or pay the 16k balloon. Thinking of giving back just so I don't have to find the 16k but what's the alternative. Still love the car. But out of warranty and extension to warranty is £90/mth and service agreement £42/mth. Love the size and space the car offers but can't afford to buy another or lease one. But as I said could keep this for cost of 16k plus maintained even. Or Thinking to sell to webuyanycar for 21k - pay off 16k and use 5k towards a lease deal (but which one as would love another Merc or similar) or best to stick and maintain? 1st post on this site. Sorry if this doesn't make sense. Any advice welcome. Cheers.

None taken Spud, but just to hammer the point home, it's not even that clear.

Of course you cannot have full ownership of a £15,725 car for 24 payments of £147 (although some on here would expect to!), what I was trying to say is that you cannot even achieve such PCP payments, even if you plan to settle the £10k GFV, as discussed in this example.

What people don't seem to understand with 'leasing' (actually it's Contract Hire) is this;

The lessor calculates how much they need to achieve in total payments for the car - this is usually the difference between what they purchase the car for, what they expect to sell it for at the end of the lease, and with a bit of profit and interest added in.

Let's say that this figure needs to be £5,000 over 36 months.

The lessee (you) have a choice in how to repay that, if you pay £0 advance, the payments will be equivalent to £5000 / 36 OR if you pay £1000, the payments will be £4000 / 36 etc. etc.

Hope that makes sense to those struggling to understand why the lease deals offering the smaller advance payments, cannot match the monthly rentals of the deals with higher advance payments.

Nobody is balancing things that way purely to annoy you

Certainly some deals going - our local dealer was offering the Tech something version which lists at about £28K for £20.6 - took a test drive - impressed with the build quality - a bit dark and claustrophobic inside but they tried to take me down the PCP route whereas I wanted a straight lease. I wasn't having a go or trying to teach you to suck eggs  These threads usually end up with people questioning what a PCP is, what a lease is, how can it be so cheap etc etc so a simplistic explanation is usually beneficial. I appreciate that many people know how they work (and that its more complex than I implied..)

The term "buy" is used very loosely, particularly w/r to a PCP so thats why I picked it up - but yes you are right you cannot buy outright (full 100% ownership) a £15k car for 147/month over 2 years, no question.

No offence meant...
ezzer72
2 Feb 17 3 #56
Thanks for the lesson in PCP. By cruel coincidence, I arrange around 200 PCPs a year, and actually understand them better than most.

The only point I was addressing is that the guy who I was replying to was referring to the advance rental like it were some kind of scam, and that the deal should be just £147 per month, with no upfront payment. When challenged, he said he usually 'buys new' and therefore wasn't overly familiar with leasing.

So, I asked him where he can buy a brand new £22,000 car, with NIL deposit, for £147 p/m.

I still don't think it's possible, despite your explanation.

In your example, the cash price is £15,725 with a GFV of £10,000 after 24 months.

Even if you could get 0% finance £5,725 / 24 = £238.54, not £147.

So, you cannot even buy a £15,725 car for £147 per month, let alone a £20k+ one.

Does that mean I was right?

Bit like the Peugeot 208 GTi Prestige deal that many of us got on here. £163 per month with £163 deposit.
Spud211
2 Feb 17 #51
Probably, but not necessarily. It all depends on the salesman, how much they want the sale etc. Quite often the best deals come from fleet sales teams who need to bump the numbers up for whatever reason. I speak from experience of buying cars on PCP and of getting typically 15-22% off (with the best being 22% off my M135i - nearly £10k as specified). That was a factory order with my option/colour etc choices.

It does vary a lot on the salesman though and many will swear blind that it's impossible, until someone else does the deal with you

Or maybe, just maybe, they want the feel and luxury of owning a newer car.

Amazing how many people are willing to expose their own inferiority complexes in these lease deal threads.

You are right about the cash price being around £15K. Bear in mind though that you will get a car already in the showroom and not a new one from the factory for that price.
m5rcc
2 Feb 17 #46
Sure. I've driven it too on this Q30 and in an A-Class. It can feel a little breathless with its 109PS but there is enough mid-range torque for smooth and relatively meaningful acceleration. You can't expect a performance car because it isn't one.

2 Feb 17 1 #44
Unless it had the N47 engine...
Spud211
2 Feb 17 1 #43
It's entirely possible using a PCP - which is effectively a more flexible version of a lease..

With a lease or a PCP you are essentially just paying depreciation on the car plus a bit of interest, after any discounts the dealership offers.

This Q30 has an RRP of £21,500 and after 2 years the guaranteed value will be around £10k give or take. Currently the cash price for this car is just over £15k - i.e. they are being discounted massively at retail (check any infinity retailer...) then over the 2 years you have £5k to finance. You can either do this yourself (on a PCP) and have the option to sell the car/get out of the lease at any point - or you can take a lease which is typically a tiny bit cheaper but with a fixed deposit and fixed term..but either way you are basically financing that £5k.

I've made it round numbers for simplicity but thats the principle. The PCP figures are roughly the same as the least in this case, but with zero deposit.

edit: Thats not to say this isnt a brilliant deal - it is for this car as it saves you all the effort of negotiation. Just to prove the above - here is where they are offering the Q30 in this spec for £15,725 (click "cash price") BEFORE any negotiation.

The lease is still cheaper, but the point being that the discounts are there and thats why the lease company can offer such a deal

I've test driven it and can report that it feels rough with the manual gearbox. maybe it's because I'm coming from a much smoother petrol manual.
m5rcc
2 Feb 17 3 #41
There's nothing wrong with the engine: it's reasonably frugal despite it being based an engine that's 20 years+ old.
dush_yant
2 Feb 17 #39
Shame about the 1.5 Renault engine. Wish it had a Mercedes engine.
Also note that the infotainment unit is not Mercedes and is a bit crappy.

I have an Infiniti dealer close by and there's about 30 Q30s gathering dust in the front lot.... I don't know why Autotrader is only listing 8 though, I think they are limiting the number because they don't want to flood the market and risk bringing the price down?
dush_yant to dush_yant
2 Feb 17 #40
OK I changed the search in Autotrader and it's showing 26 New/Nearly New Q30s plus 8 used ones at that dealer's location, so they are not hiding anything. Still that's a lot of unsold stock to have at just one dealer which explains the discounted lease deals.

I'd really recommend getting the version with the business pack which comes out at just over £5000 is my maths is correct...
https://www.nationwidevehiclecontracts.co.uk/Infiniti_q30-1-5d-se-5-door-business-pack-70491.htm

You get loads of extras with the business pack like sat nav, heated seats, automatic wipers, cruise control, auto-folding and dimming mirrors and possibly some other bits that I'm forgetting.

I've got one of these by the way, so feel free to ask if you have any questions about the car.
ben14
2 Feb 17 1 #29
Annoys me how the pictures of the car they use on these lease sites (and on this post) are of the top model i.e. the Sport model which looks much nicer than the SE which is the car you'd be getting. If that isn't false advertising, I don't know what is.

Great deal. I've bought the wife new mini coopers since the BMW version came out but leasing, if you are a low mileage user, makes economical sense & saves having to sell before getting a new one. I held the Mini's for three years and traded in with around 19k on the clock so always got a good deal each time. However, over that three years my total expenditure was always more than most lease deals available today, so that's the way to go now. next month our latest mini is a mint condition 3 years old and has 13.5k on the clock. High spec so won't have a problem selling. Putting just over a grand down on a lease like this then just £147 / month leaves me with a big chunk to put into savings.

GDB2222 to Harley Roadking
2 Feb 17 7 #24
Can I ask a daft question? I understand that some people don't want secondhand cars. But if you keep the mini you have, it won't be secondhand. It's a great car, with loads of equipment, and low mileage. The worst of its depreciation is over, and it's not going to cost a lot in servicing. So, the daft question is simply, why not keep the mini?
monkeyhanger75
2 Feb 17 #23
For that size diesel engine, Mercedes uses Renault 1.5DCI in their A-class (as do all Nissans - which this is) , so this car almost certainly will too.
