I've done the HP trade in/ trade up deals several times and their customer service is excellent & helpful if any issues arise, don't worry about not getting your cashback or not being anything other than a sole trader in name only

You are pretty wrong hp pays cashbook irrespective of retailer.

Did not need featured PC, but just bought an HP Elite X21012 G1 - L5H17EA for £598 from Amazon, which is a decent substitute for Surface Pro 4 base model I was going to get until MS put UK prices into the stratosphere. Business model designed for user to maintain it and change parts (note RAM soldered). £300 cash back on the HP scheme, so just £300. The point is would you consider paying over £500 for this desktop?.
I've highlighted what I think are the notable good or bad features.
The main plus is the CPU speed and the number of cores, but in reality, does that count for much?
The rest is pretty bland, I think.
It is just a desktop, not a server or even a moderate gaming machine.

I've successfully claimed hp cashback on a desktop, laptop and printer. Each time getting a great deal after cashback. Make sure you fill in the forms correctly and that your trade in matches the terms. I traded in a desktop I bought off eBay for £20 but was also looking at Motorola Xoom tablets as they are 10inch. They ask for the brand of desktop so I would avoid a self built thing. There are warranty checkers online that you can use to check when the PC was manufactured from the serial number.

I tried it last year and got the cashback, I'm a sole trader but don't use my own name...I'm only registered with HMRC for tax purposes, I don't pay VAT and certainly not registered with company house.

Has anyone experience of claiming this cashback? Would you be able to claim it under say your workplace name?

Also any thoughts on adding graphics card to this (+possibly changing the PSU) and using for gaming?

I got a 5 yr old pc but I removed the hard drive , I guess that would make me ineligible for the offer ?

If I've a desktop that was home built how are they gonna know the age? I guess the bios date on boot would give it away? I have windows 10 on it but it's over 7 years old sadly

180w is pretty meagre tho and may NOT be std PSU so not easily changed IDK?

If you've nothing to trade and can't find anything at the local tip or freecycle then you could buy a 10" tablet for £41 on ebay to get the full trade in price and as it's a brand new tablet they'd have a problem trying to get out of paying you the full trade in value!
EDIT: IGNORE THE ABOVE! - I accidentally listed a 7.5" tablet, thanks for Mavica for pointing this error out. Anyway, there's plenty of cheap 9" or larger tablets for £40 ish

And to think I have sold my old Samsung tablet last week... At £150 trade-in that would have been the same as I paid over 4 years ago...

People have given their own name as the business name, you could legitimately be a sole trader trading as your own name.

Some people use cheap and nasty 10" tablets from ebay for £40 to trade in, ensure you document (take a picture) of what you're trading in and note all items sent as some people get their trade in value reduced as they're told they didn't return a power supply (even though they did)

HP specify terms are basic:

For your Trade-in to qualify for the promotion it must be a working, complete and undamaged, (reasonable wear and tear accepted) Laptop (minimum 10” screen size), Tablet (minimum 9” screen size) or Desktop. Your Trade-in must be no more than 7 years old and complete with all accessories including working battery and power supply where applicable.

Would a HP microserver be taken as the trade? I have one lying around doing nothing, it less than 7 years old

Bought previously with trade-in when they accepted XP machines - a shame that clause has been removed from the T&Cs so it's only machines under 7 years old now...
