I was in LA in '95 doing one of those ultra touristy guided tours of the sights when our guide said "you're really lucky, they're actually filming a new movie on this street at the moment". Turned out to be Heat and the legendary running gun battle. Classic film.

WTF?!!! Maybe you'd prefer POLICE ACADEMY 7: MISSION TO MOSCOW.
Check out Amazon's reviews and blu-ray.com's forums. Consensus is that it's an awful remaster. Heavily cropped and the colours are way off.
edit- Check here if you want to compare for yourself. A poster from blu-ray.com has even compared the new remaster to the original negatives and has said that the older masters are far closer.
That said, if you liked it and you didn't pay that much for it, then that's cool.

Vincent Hanna: My life's a disaster zone. I got a stepdaughter so ****** up because her real father's this large-type a**hole. I got a wife, we're passing each other on the down-slope of a marriage - my third - because I spend all my time chasing guys like you around the block. That's my life. Neil McCauley: A guy told me one time, "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." Now, if you're on me and you gotta move when I move, how do you expect to keep a... a marriage?

he was a thief and the bad guy, either they both died at the end or they both got away, but no, look , society dictated how this film ends not common sense and story telling.

it ended like that because he was a thief and the supposed bad guy, look into it as much as you want, either they both die at the end or none of them. the story didnt dictate the ending, society did, it is that simple.

One of the very few films that really nails the audio for a gun battle.

A shame about the rest of the audio. Lots of places where you struggle to hear dialogue even though Al helps out.

That is amazing. I can't think of a better urban shoot out in any film. And to be there when it was filmed is absolutely brilliant. Awesome and just by chance. As the scene was very long I guess the street must have been closed off for hours. OMG i would have loved to have been there.

I looked at it slightly differently - Hanna couldn't change track, costing him marriages along the way. McAuley, on the other hand, would have survived and gotten away clean if he HAD stayed on the "no attachments, nothing in your life..." track. His feeling for Brenneman's character (can't recall her name in it - maybe the one genuine criticism of the film is that the female roles are a little underpowered), his need to get revenge on Waingro are what cost him.
Owned this on DVD and now blu-ray. Do I really need it again?

Transfer looks like crap when you do a direct comparison. They've ruined the colours.

Great price for what it is, definitely worth getting if you don't already have it. Sadly though it's a really underwhelming remaster, hence it being so cheap despite only coming out last week.

Seriously? I watched my copy which arrived yesterday and it's a beautiful transfer. The audio is spot on too. Blows the original Blu-ray out of the water.
Plus the 2016 filmmakers panel extra on the second disk is an excellent watch.

My take (SPOILERS):
It ended exactly as it was meant to given the characters.
Both characters are on a one way course which they cannot deviate from because of their nature. They both know where it leads but feel compelled to stick to their destructive habits because it's all they know. Bob dies at the end because that's his path. His career as a high profile thief is always going to end in his death especially when he is faced with pursuit by someone as determined and single minded as Al. The consolation is that Bob doesn't die alone. Al will most likely dies alone with no hope of companionship at the end.
Just look at the end where Bob has a chance to get away. with his companion. Does he take it? No he gives in to his nature and knows where it will lead. He even finds himself making the call to drop everything and walk away when the heat is on by walking away from his companion to run.
They cannot change their behaviors or their paths no matter how much they try. Bob was always going to die being a thief. Al was always going to die alone, having given everything to his job.

Apparently Andy McNab from the SAS was on set adviser for the gun battles which accounts for the realism not only for the way the actors handled the weapons but also the awesome sound of the gun battle.

Remastering this would mean pacino dying and Bob getting away with the fit young girl, then maybe I'll purchase. The way it should of been ...actually no messing about at the airport at all....the most politically correct end of all time.

** SPOILER ALERT**
Nonsense. The whole point of De Niro dying was to show the consequences of taking way too many risks. He had plenty of chances to get out, and was shown to normally be extremely cautious, but against all advice he didn't leave when he should have. Made perfect sense for him to pay the price for that.
