If you have older kids that can manage a long flight then I'd really suggest Bali and there are some great flights with Garuda Indonesia which are a good airline in my opinion, I've flown with them long haul and short haul and never had problems. The flights include luggage and have a short stop en-route but it is still a long flight so I know this will put some people off but if you have kids a little older that don't mind travelling further then Bali is a great destination.
Flights leave on 20/08 but arrive into Bali on 21/08. You'll need to allow for transfers in your price but personally I'd look at taxi or shuttle options as Bali is so reasonably priced you can't go wrong.
I've picked a lovely hotel, and there are so many cheap options in Bali. It's the Koa D'Surfer hotel in Cangguu
The hotel has great reviews, a rooftop pool and is close to the beach. It is also surf themed which I thought was really uniquely designed and ideal for kids that enjoy surfing too.
Bali is really budget friendly for activities and to even hire a driver to explore the island. You'll certainly get more for your money too! *Based this trip on 2 adults and 2 children of 10 years old*
Book flights for 4 at Travel Trolley £1318.28

I went to Bali in the 90s...I'd always thought it would be exotic. What I hadn't factored in is that it's essentially Magaluf for the Aussies! I also recall swimming in the sea in Kuta & seeing a full loaded nutty toffee crisp body surfing the waves alongside of me (that memory has haunted me for years). Then there's the terrorist threat.
Good price though.

So lets summarise.....pi55ed Aussies, getting blown up and to top it all, swimming with King Richards........Hmmm, might have to have a think about this.

Let's all calm down a little here. Bali is a stunning place, all you have to do to avoid the **** young Aussie is to avoid down town kuta. Other areas of Kuta, Jambaryn bay, Ubud and Nuba Dua are lovely places.Yes there is a terrorist threat like most places but it's safer than main land Indonesia. You could always stay at a bigger hotel which has security but we felt safe. I would return and i normally avoid places like Egypt and Tunisia. I travelled to lots of exotic places and Bali is in my top 3.Great place and great price heat.

I went around 2-3 years ago and had a completely different experience and did Lombok-Gili Islands-Komodo-Ubud-Sanur and travelled around different places on a moped. It was brilliant and not like that at all!

When I was checking out reviews of the hotel, one traveller uploaded a picture of this sign in the hotel which made me smile.

Been looking at bali for a holiday until i found out about the rabies outbreak on the island. I checked this out on lots of sites, and its been quite bad for a while. Check it out before you book. I have travelled quite a few places, but this just puts me off. Shame as this is a great price, hot hot deal and i have voted hot too. Nice find

If anyone does go, can I encourage you to visit the Odd Cat Cafe and also Villa Kitty. Both can be found on Facebook. Villa Kitty does some great work rescue, sterilising and immunising Bali cats and kittens and they are always wanting holiday makers to come and spend time cuddling the cats and kittens. I've not read anything about rabies but I'm sure if you message them on Facebook they will certainly have knowledge of what's going on there.

Why should rabies put you off? Get vaccinated and stay away from the local dogs. God if we had stayed away from countries that had rabies when i was a child in the 80s then we would never have stepped foot on mainland Europe.

If you want a plush high end hotel on a nice beach then Nusa dua is the way to go. It was also close(15min taxi) to jimbaran bay which is great to eat and drink on the beach watching sunset. Ubud is a nice place, very chilled green lush area with temples, art and very popular with the yoga crowd. Too many places so depends on what you are looking for. Check out this website for more information
I would recommend the traditional fire dance at iluwatu temple, stunning views and sunset and tanah lot temple. We hired a driver for a day to take us to various places that we wanted to visit for around £24 11-12hrs. So much to see and do but the best part are the people.....genuinely friendly:)

Another painful memory...hiring a driver - we hired one expecting to see the island & the **** took us on a (part) commercial tour of people/businesses he was getting backhanders from ....here's a traditional wood trinket maker, here's a Bali painter ...beware!

Our driver asked us if we wanted to stop at those places and we said no! So we didn't,he did recommend a place for lunch which was stunning food overlooking unspoilt paddy fields. You are paying them to drive where YOU want to go, just have to man up a little

Went to Nusa Dua, Bali for my honeymoon. Gorgeous place and very relaxing.
Long haul flight was a nightmare both ways as we ended up with a crying child under 3 in the row in front of us both there and back! Obviously unfortunate but it has put me off doing a long haul flight again in the near future.

A little advice for long haul flying; try not to sit in the centre row at the front of each cabin section. This is where they will place young families because the flight cots that the airlines provide bolt into the bulkhead at those points. Or just listen to music or watch films to drown out the crying lol

I'm not trying to put people off. If you read my previous comment, you would see i am well travelled too. Including whilst in the armed forces. This includes areas with rabies and other outbreaks.... People have contracted rabies from monkeys, birds, cats etc not just dogs, even a scratch from an infected animal could transfer the virus. Yes i agree you can get vaccinated, but it is still a very serious condition . Without a vaccine it around a 90%+ death rate if not treated within 24 hours. I also voted this as a hot deal. I Just wanted to let people know of the outbreak over the last few years so they are aware, as many visitors go to the jungle area to visit the real bali. At least they are aware if they read this.

I'm glad I'm inspiring people to look further than Spain for school holidays. You'll have a lovely time in Bali. If you/your family like cats please visit Villa Kitty in Ubud and spend some time with the kittens and cats. They have a Facebook page.

Flown Garuda to Bali 3 times in the last year, and always had 3 seats to myself on the way out. never seen any local dog showing signs of aggression etc... Your stopover in Jakarta should get you access to the International - > Domestic lounge as it's over 3 hours, ask for your invitation while checking in at Heathrow. Worth looking into domestic flight from Bali to Lombok (LOP), usually under £30 each way and consider visiting Kuta(Lombok), Senggigi and the Gili Islands..

Yes, we flew with them to Lombok. I loved Lombok and Gili Air. Climbing Rinjani was brilliant too, although with a family the travelling around may not be very practical.
