I'm always getting asked for more school holiday deals and I'm always trying to find things a bit different. Here is a great 10 night trip to Canada in August from Bristol. The flight is 10-11hrs and with a very short stop en-route it's good flight times and all luggage/meals included.
You'll arrive into Toronto on 19/08 and hire car is included for the duration. I've budgeted slightly more for a better and bigger car. You'll stay for 6 nights at the Radisson in a quadruple room and breakfast is included too. There are slightly cheaper hotels and motels but this has much better reviews and includes breakfast too so I think it's worth the £5-£10 extra price in total. As you have a car you can easily get around Toronto but also explore further afield.
On 25/08 you'll check out and head to Niagara Falls. I've allowed 3 nights in this area - at the Space Motel - because there is so many things to do around the Lake Ontario region and as you have a car you can explore too.
On 28/08 you'll head back to Toronto for a final night and this time at the Best Western Plus which has a great rate which again includes breakfast.
You'll fly back to Bristol on 29/08 arriving home on 30/08.

Why not? I know people that have been abroad long haul with their kids. A friend who is a single parent has just got back from taking her 4 year old to NZ.
Some families want a beach holiday, an AI resort, other families would only go to the UK. Other people want something different and are happy to travel. For those with kids a bit older Toronto has a lot to offer and I think kids of any age would enjoy the Niagara falls cruise.

We did 14 nights in Toronto/Niagra last year with 3 kids although at a much higher price, we had a great time and kids still talk about it. Don't see why it cant be done with kids.

Be very careful with Otel.com, search them up on Tripadvisor, you'll see what I mean.

If you search for any OTA such as Amoma, Otel, Ebookers, Expedia, Hotelopia you will always find bad reviews. I always follow up any hotel booking with an email to the accommodation a couple of days after to make sure they have received my booking and never had a problem and I've used all of these companies many times before and even some lesser known ones such as getaroom.

Why not? We took our 1 and 4 year old to New York for 10 days. Awesome trip. There's always stuff for kids to do.

have you been to the canadian side of Niagara? Its like blackpool, but on steroids.
Should be able to get a cheaper hotel than the space one. Can usually pick up a 3 star for £50 a night naming your own price.
Use a website like Priceline if your not fussy & happy to go for a secret deal or name your own price.
can usually narrow the hotel down naming your own price by looking at the hotel amenities. Only once I didn't get the hotel I aimed for - but still ended up in a Hilton Doubletree!
What kind of things did you get up to? And did you manage to find accommodation allowing 5 in a room?

Toronto is amazing, 3 weeks wasn't long enough to scratch the surface when I went. I don't regret going to Niagra but I didn't like it either, it reminded me of Blackpool, very weird place.

Personally I'd avoid Priceline and Secret Hotels etc if you have kids. They are great if you don't mind where you end up and I've used them many times before if I am sure I know the hotel and if I'm struggling to get a room in places due to special events etc but I think most families would need to know there is space for the kids and some hotels won't let you add beds/cribs into rooms if you haven't booked a room specifically for kids, especially for older kids. I based this trip on a 9 and 8 year old so the rooms definitely accommodate children.

So cross reference the amenities on trip advisor & look for hotels that are 3* with 1000-1500 reviews, along with the catchment area selected in hotwire.

Did this years ago, 3 days in Niagra is about 2.5 too many. Seriously, look at the falls, go on the Maid of the Mist, go up the tower with the better view, don't know the name of it now but it was sponsored by Mintola when I went, or was it a camera brand with a similar name?
Optional if you have an ESTA, walk over to the American side which is a tad more civilized.

I was in Toronto & Niagara in September as a couple. We were in Niagara for 2 nights, ample time to see and do everything, kids & teenagers would love it. I would go back. Personally, I found Toronto pretty boring and would not do it with kids. Really depends on the kids though, my teenagers don't like city breaks, that's why we do Florida as a family and as a couple we do the city breaks......

Niagara? Like most say, go, look at the falls early in th day, go on the boat, then get the truck out of Dodge. It's just a weird place.

Agreed, as bojangles says, Hotwire is great if you do your research on the likely hotels first....... but be aware that the first price you see then has tax added to it.
So: £74.54 per night x 3 nights x 1 room
= £223.62
Tax recovery charges + fees
= £60.55
Total (GBP) = £284.17. (so actually around £94 per night)
But still a lot cheaper than the equivalent price on other websites. :wink:

Define very short stop en route.
I don't see a minimum 2 and a half hour wait in Brussels airport as a very short stop over, especially when you leave Bristol at 6am so I presume that you have to be there a fair bit earlier than this.

sorry for the late reply, we stayed at double tree by Hilton, it was a large room which could have accommodated six, I checked with the hotel before booking and they had no problem with three kids in one room. It was the one near Markham, Would definitely recommend getting a car though. We went to Wonderland, CN Tower, Niagara a couple of times, helicopter experience over Niagara is breathtaking, maid of the mist boat tour, explored downtown on foot, open top bus tour and boat rides plus a few days lounging around doing nothing. Weather in summer is beautiful. There are also some very nice lakes around Toronto worth visiting.

The flights leave at 06:05 in the morning!!!! So you need to leave home in the middle of the night. Total nightmare. Then 2 hr 25 minutes in Brussels.

2.25hrs transfer I thought was very reasonable given you need to get off the plane and find your gate. It's not like it's 5-6 hrs. These flights were under £300 return so I actually thought the times and duration were good given the price but I'm sure if you had been willing to pay more you may have been able to find direct or ones that leave at a better hour. It's irrelevant now as the flights at that price have gone.

We spent 8 days around Toronto and Niagra in Jan 2 years ago was -40c so didn't see much of Toronto as it was so bl**dy cold. We stayed at the grand - the one with a hot tub on the top (yes we went in it - hair froze in seconds) wouldn't recommend it was really snotty staff were up themselves, motels in Canada are great especially with kids as they are more like studio flats and often have pools for $50 a night! Sheraton at Niagra - you only go once you want the views and great with kids as hotel links to pool. The area behind hotels with the view in Niagra is very Blackpool/Las Vegas I would get your kids to close their eyes as you drive in otherwise they will want to spend time there and you won't! As another poster said def walk over rainbow bridge and see the other side. Toronto - go to area where micro brewery's are good food and mini beers, also hunt out a Japanese restaurant it looks like a shed door on side of a house - great experience. Canada is full of really welcoming people it's my favourite place (BC is top)

I have been to Canada a few times over the last few years and always book through Canadian affair / airtransat. Usually get prices very close to £300 for Manchester to Toronto with no stops.

I would also seriously consider looking at airbnb for a place to stay in Toronto. The £100-150 a Ightfield hotels in Toronto aren't usually as good as our £25-35 travelodges over here due to Toronto being so expensive to stay. Can usually get a week airbnb for £200-300.
