Noticed incredibly cheap flights from London Southend to Milan Malpensa with FlyBe. Lots of dates in August available outbound £25pp inbound £14pp. A family of 4 could travel for £121.96 rtn.
Malpensa is approx 1hr drive from Lake Como or Lake Garda about 2hrs drive.

I've done it. It's about an hour from Liverpool Street and if I remember correctly was about 15 quid each way.

To be honest though, I recently flew a couple of times from Southend and was very impressed. Lots of quick trains from Liverpool Street, cheaper train fare than Gatwick/Luton/Stansted and then all you have is 200m walk from the station to the terminal. I was through security in 5 mins - no hassle at all. So much easier than Gatwick.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not knocking the airport. It's a good option. But calling it a London airport is a farce.

I agree, Southend was an extra half hour drive but I saved that due to quick check in and security, plus just 2 mins walk to terminal from car park. This must how flying was in the 1950s!

Yeah, the same way Oxford is apparently London Oxford. It's a joke. Any strip of concrete, asphalt or grass in the SE of England is now apparently a London airport.
London should be charging these comedian airfields for use of it's name. Get on it Sadiq!
