Thanks OP. VII & VIII purchased. Let's see if I can actually finish VII this time. Still sore after losing a huge number of hours' save game on my old PS1 memory card. I think it's time to get over it and get back into the game!

I lost over 50hrs of a game once after the card corrupted. After that, I had extra 2 memory cards, the saves were backed up, alternating between them. Paranoid, you bet I was.

I got the verification code sent to my mobile as well and entered it but it was still stuck in pending validation.
I woke up to an email from customer support this morning and my orders finally gone through. I wasnt expecting them to respond so quickly but I ended up buying the games directly off steam which worked out £3 cheaper for the same 5 games so im now waiting on a refund from them.

Paid via paypal -- order status still says "Pending validation" and its been 24hrs. Their FAQ says that i have to contact customer support so they can get more details/info off me to verify my order.
I messaged Customer Support about my order and what other sort of information they needed for 'verification' and how incredibly inefficient and frustrating the whole process is, because even if I decide i cant be bothered to wait and cancel my order..... I still need to contact them ANYWAY so that they can cancel it.
Depending how quickly this gets resolved, I might have to pursue a refund via paypal for goods not delivered.

I just had to enter the code sent to my mobile and order was processed, ensure you did not receive an email prompting to enter your mobile number or a code on the site.

The first ones out on the Playstation, 7,8 & 9 are good games to start with. The ones before that are okay, Final Fantasy 6 is as good as 7 in my opinion. I'm not a fan of the versions released on Steam (any number before 7) due to the graphical changes they made.
The easiest to get into would probably be I think are 8,9 and 10. I've never played Final Fantasy 13, number 11 is pretty good but hasn't been released on PC yet (I'm hoping it comes out this year.).
They've remade Final Fantasy 7 which is being released this year (no confirmation on a PC release as of yet, though), so you may want to start with that one first before the remake comes out.

I've heard the PC versions are slightly lacking compared to the old PS versions especially in regard to the audio is this true?

VII and VIII were released on PC using MIDI versions of the original PS soundtrack. VII was given an official update by Square but for VIII you can install the popular Rose and Wine mod.

Lol, when I was 10 the electrics went in my house as my game was saving and I lost a 82 hour save file. Cried and screamed so much. Ultimately just did it again. Even now I get **** scared when I see the "saving do not remove memory card or turn off the power" box on games, I just can't go through that pain again.

The same thing happened to me - twice! Got stuck on a boss (Demon's Gate), left it for ages, went back to it later and my save game wasn't there. Started over, got to the same boss, managed to defeat him, only for my memory card to get corrupted and lose all of my FF save games (had a new card dedicated to I, II, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII and IX at that point). Thankfully I've now got it on PS3 and HDD saves seem much more reliable. Suppose it couldn't hurt to have it on Steam as well...

Similar thing happened to me with VIII but in my case my disc 4 of 4 was scratched so I couldn't get past a certain point. Was so annoyed.

Oh god I spent so long getting my ass handed to me by Demons Gate before I accepted I wasn't strong enough and had to start the game from scratch again

Yep, mine was official too, the card was fine it didn't fail, but because I switched the console off mid-saving the save was corrupted. Nothing I could do but delete and start again.

Were we all using official or third party memory cards? I had one of each die on me - although the official one did come back to life long enough for me to recover some save games from it, so I did manage to get my stuck-on-Demon's-Gate save back about 5 years after it would have been of any use to me. I think what we've concluded here is that PSX memory cards were pretty volatile storage - I'm glad we live in an age of cloud storage (a shame that none of these seem to be supported by Steam Cloud but there's always Dropbox!).
Actually these are the prices they were on sale for in the Steam winter sale - except for X/X-2, which was £11.99, so it's £2 cheaper here, making it the cheapest it's ever been.

Having lost all of those hours I finally got around to starting again, plunged many more hours into it only for our house to be broken into at uni and everything stolen, including the memory card with all those hours on. I've not gone back to it since. But now I've bought it, it's time to heal the scars I think!

I think we have all had one of these stories, I used to save only one save per game on memory cards. Had a 60 hour save going and was saving the game early hours of the morning and switched off the socket while it was saving, lost the save. Since that day I have kept several saves per game.
