Oh, mate. I was exactly the same. I actually first purchased this game in November 2015 on PlayStation 4. I've just worked the pile of shame down to the Xbox One version.
The major thing I would point out to you is not to underestimate VATS. Use it at all possible situtations, it will help, a lot.
Also, when you get to around level 5 as you travel around Lexington, be sure to listen out for Military Frequency AF95 and tune into it with your Pipboy. It will open up the Cambridge Police Station line of quests and help you to bump up a fair few levels by completeing a few fetch quests given to you by NPCs in the location.
I had a Google around before starting the Xbox One version to see what was a decent built to kick off with using VATS and started using this one...
Agility is a major player in the game if you're going to be depending on VATS a lot, as it's an increase in both AP and stealth

I played Fallout 3 to death and beat it..but even at this price for some reason I'm still unsure whether I should play this game or not.
I've watched many gameplay and reviews and regardless of the criticism it always looks like a big let down compared to 3.

Really really want to buy this game again but I fear that the moment I do the Ultimate Edition will be announced.
FO3 and NV both had ultimate editions, why hasn't 4 yet? Come on Bethesda!

Don't count on it. They're still making expansion packs aren't they?
I bought the Season Pass for £25, no idea if it's still available for that price. If it is, £32.99 (inc this deal) is still a great price. Nuka World is like an entire game on it's own and that's only a few months old.
Edit: Just checked, doesn't look like there will be more so it's possible. Can't imagine it will be much less than £30 if they do an Ultimate though.

Stay close to the starting areas until you build up some decent skills, armour etc. The further you travel from the start area the harder it gets. I ignored VATS all together. Watch video's on youtube for tips.

If FPS games aren't usually your thing (like me), by far most important thing is learn how to shoot using VATS (press L1). Most basic point is don't try to hit if the percentage is low - I don't go with anything below 60. Although one very important exception - when you use a critical hit (pressing Square after X ), it doesn't matter what the percentage is. That can be very useful.
Taking out body parts using VATS can help a lot too. Particularly ghouls - take out one of the legs, they've had it once that happens. Otherwise, head-shots will do most damage in the majority of case (but you have to be nearer to get a good chance to hit).
I never shoot using manual aiming, I find it too difficult and I waste a shed load of bullets trying. Sneak, hit with VATS, hide/run until AP meter is filled again, repeat.
Don't be tempted to just do the 'main' story avoid and side missions, they'll help you level up.
Oh, and take a companion that is good at fighting! Later on, you can tool them up with whatever armour/guns/ammo you are not using. Really makes a difference in tough missions to give them good equipment.

Bought for £7.19, had a discount voucher from picking up Dying Light The Following the other day. Im sorted for a few months now...as if thats gonna stop me from buying more though!
I took a pic to share on here myself, asked at the till if this was nationwide and he said no just here. MGSV on xbone was there for 4.99 too. Ridiculous! Grabbed both (along with FO3 for under a tenner!!).

Adored Fallout 3 and NV, but having played this for 20 hours off and on it just never licked with me for some reason. Did enjoy it in patches, but it seemed to me to have gotten extremely shooty with the RPG elements almost an afterthought. I also thought visually it was disappointing. I have recently got a top notch 4k tv and a pro and with the new patch I think I will give it another go at this price.
