Oh, I'm sorry. I think my use of English confused you. When I said that I was seeing if the results in published articles were reproducible and noticeable on our home systems, what I meant was... hmmm, how to dumb it down further? We were taking a tiny bit of time to see if the articles were lying. Spoiler alert: they weren't.

I'm also sorry to hear that you have some terrible wasting disease that means that 90 minutes is a full day for you. I'm healthy, so I get 16-17 hours of waking time each day. 90 minutes of playing games and drinking whisky with friends [real friends who I can meet in real life, if you're unfamiliar with the concept] before going out for the evening doesn't exactly destroy a day for us. I'm not sure where the blindfolding comes from, though..? We usually don't do that until after we get back in. :man:

Thank you for referencing Ars, TomsHardware and Techspot before then going on to produce benchmarks from... TechBuyersGuru. It's good to see you do have a sense of humour after all. (And, unless I'm much mistaken, weren't those taken from a quad-channel X99 system? Hardly representative for gamers in general, let alone the HUKD crowd!) You'll obviously see more benefit on a dual-channel system - and either you're technically-inept, and you didn't know the difference; or you did know, and purposely chose to use unrepresentative benchmarks to win Internet points at the risk of giving bad purchasing advice to everyone else reading. Again, don't be that horrible kind of person, please. Our comments here are supposed to help people with purchases.

It's nice to hear you talk about theoretical performance bottlenecks without referencing the effects in practice - that at least proves that you're not an experienced technical user. If you're interested in reading up on actual performance differences (of which I've checked just a couple for myself to confirm, and shared my experience with the people here - thank you for telling me I can't have experienced what I did experience and what all the other articles claim to have experienced, though), there's a nice collation of multiple articles and summarised results here. If you have any questions, I'm happy to help.

(Your "8GB vs 16GB" graph seems to be on a completely different topic..? Still, it agrees with another link I shared a few hours ago - no apparent difference in game performance between 8GB and 16GB of RAM.)

Oh my goodness, next time you're back 'up' (sorry, the meaning of "go down outside" is lost on me), at least go back and edit your misleading comment to add the fact that you've shared pictures quad-channel benchmarks which are relevant to approximately 0% of the HUKD crowd.

I don't care that you don't know about BIOS profiles, don't understand the difference between memory frequencies and memory timings, don't know how to test PC performance yourself, and don't understand the difference between dual-channel and quad-channel setups. I do care that other people might see those quad-channel benchmarks and think that they somehow apply to DDR4 memory frequencies on typical motherboards, e.g. Z170 boards, when they... don't.

It seems you're one of those horrible people after all, happier to mislead people than accept that things change. :disappointed: Still, maybe you'll win the Internet! Hooray for you!

Don't fight! Buy whichever ram you want to. Not everyone can afford to spend £120 for a 3000Mhz ram. I would anytime go for 2400 one if it costs me anywhere around 70 for that gives a better value cost wise.

Oh, I do apologise. Please excuse us for taking an hour and a half to pursue our interests (and for me to personally check whether or not it's worth spending extra money on faster RAM for a new build next month). No doubt when you've finished coolly writing your comments about memory speed on a UK deals website, you immediately take a limo across to your private jet, fly to Italy and spend the rest of the day playing electric guitar in the Colosseum. :man:

But I am interested in a source for your numbers - only three games will see a max of a 3% improvement? That doesn't match either my personal experience, or the articles available on the subject - and, as you've fallen into the trap of thinking the average frames per second is the important figure in this case, I think that exposes just what an expert you are on the subject. As mentioned repeatedly by everyone with any experience or technical knowledge, it's the minimum frame rates where you see/feel the benefit, and it's a lot more than 3% in most 2015-onwards AAA games. Let me guess: you're another DDR4-2133 owner? I'm sorry if that's the case, but please don't be that horrible kind of person that wants everyone else to make the same mistake you've made.

Seriously, I'd love to go for a beer with you. Life and soul of the party!

Fortunately I rely on other [more informed] journalists and tech review sites to source my information, but getting my mates over to my bedroom for a day blindfolding each other sounds like a great day too.

For reference, I still use DDR3 1800 on my 1050 rig because just like DDR4, RAM isn't the bottleneck of my system and it likely isn't in yours either. When I upgrade to Ryzen, I'll use 2400 because frequency makes zero difference for 99% of tasks. I'll use the extra money I save to buy you a pint of shandy.

There's a ton of information on this, Toms Hardware, Ars, Techspot and they all agree. Spend money on your GPU is you're a gamer, and your CPU if you run computation tasks like rendering.

Most of the games you mentioned (to illustrate the fact your day was wasted, and better spent getting fresh air):

Sounds like you guys know how to have a good time!

Memory speed will benefit any CPU bound games (FO4, 1-2 others) but we're talking apparently 1%-3% in terms of FPS, so 2FPS average gain @ 60FPS, but in GPU based games that won't be as evident if at all.

In terms of % cost increase from 2400 to 3200, you need to decide is that's worth while.
BetaRomeo
20 Feb 17 #76
Oh, what testing have you done?

Last week someone here was doubting all of the articles that claim faster memory produces better in-game results (they didn't have a counter-argument or source showing the opposite, they were just making contrary statements based on nothing... other than the fact that they'd bought 2133 ). Despite their incredibly poor argument for memory speed not making a difference, it did make me wonder if the results were a) reproducible and b) even noticeable.

A friend of mine has an i5-6600K with a 6GB 1060 and 16GB of DDR4-3200, and so we tried some of the games that seemed to benefit from faster memory. Testing was easy - just change the game settings to be high enough to average above 60, with some dips below 60 during playtime. On Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider and The Witcher 3, the difference between 2133 and 3200 is absolutely unmissable, whether you're watching or playing. The hitches are frequent and noticeable at 2133 in many areas (although some places, like that radioactive desert place in Fallout 4, didn't drop below 60 on either). We also tried The Division, to see if we could reproduce others' claims that there's no difference, and sure enough, we couldn't tell any.

Finally, as another friend was joining us, we set up Fallout 4 again (starting from Diamond City), but lied to our friend about which setting he was trying each time, so he was using the memory at 2133 when he thought it was 3200. He claimed the "2133" was much better, and suggested that the system must be automatically lowering the latency to give the "improved" performance (we set up everything manually, by the way - timings were consistent) - so that seemed to show conclusively that there's a noticeable improvement.

We wanted to test Ryse due to its claimed sometimes-hilarious performance on 2133, but none of us owned it a week ago - and now we all own it from that Humble Bundle that came out a couple of days later! I'm not sure if we'll get back to testing it.

So, what games did you test? And what memory speeds?

It's because as you increase voltage and clock speed you also increase latency
Overclocking ram is a game of diminishing returns
If the chips ran faster and at least as stable (in real world use) with those overclocked settings, chances are the engineers who designed it and marketing people who sell it would have made that the stock setting.
Think about it - if they didn't do that they'd be leaving money on the table

I overclock, but just barely, and I do it mostly for fun/hobby. I know that the most I'll get is 2-3fps better. If I want bigger improvements, I upgrade my hardware.

I hate how companies have a right to cancel on a whim. If you go into a shop they have to honor the price on the label unless it's been switched, it shouldn't be different online. I ordered 1 set of this could do with a lot more but didn't want to be greedy. Probably will get cancelled anyways.

I'm confused... That's a link to 64GB (unsold), whereas you say you got 32GB.
Fair enough though, as the poster above says, people missel stuff on eBay all the time. I remember using a website years ago that searched for common misspellings of whatever you wanted to search for and you could get some absolute bargains that never showed up in the normal search.
edanfalls
19 Feb 17 #66
Nice find, you got lucky there!

If you look at his sold items, the 2 auctions that they sold the RAM in were badly labelled. Titles were just "32GB Ram" and "Kingston Hyper x ram". In the item specifics, on one item they included the capacity ("32GB") and type ("DDR4"). On the other item they didn't even do that.

The result: Most people wouldn't have found these items. Anyone selecting RAM by speed or searching for "DDR 2400" or selecting 32GB in the filters would have missed them.

Often you get the best finds on eBay by browsing through hundreds of items instead of searching, to find items not well marked up.

Oh my goodness /o\ that one where "DoctorDeals" didn't read the article about memory speed tests at all (or possibly somehow missed a dozen benchmarks and a couple of paragraphs of details), posted a completely wrong summary... and then everyone assumed DoctorDeals knew how to read and had summarised it accurately!

That one brought the feeling of pain to my head.

Edit: just looking through, I'd forgotten it turned out they had bought DDR4-2133 - clearly they were just denying the existence of all those benchmarks that showed significantly worse results with their memory speed. I did have the chance to mess with a friend's DDR4 clocks a couple of days later, though, and the difference between memory set at 2133 and 3200 is absolutely noticeable in several games (but not The Division!) - we even blind-tested another friend to check it wasn't just confirmation bias. The articles are correct - yes, there's a boost to average FPS which looks good on paper, but the real benefit is the big boost to minimum FPS which is appreciable in practice.

Note that memory speed has started to noticeably impact games from the last couple of years, so if you're looking to put together a good gaming PC you may benefit from faster RAM, but for a cheapy gaming PC or an HTPC/encoder etc this is an absolutely fantastic deal.
