With the printer idle open the front and press secure and cancel buttons simultaneously. On the MFC-L8650CDW open the front an press * on the keypad for 5 seconds (keypad is not illuminated so you have to remember where * is).

You get a menu to reset each colour to a new cartridge of a particular capacity. STanDard, High Capacity, Super High Capacity and on some printers STaRter.

I read that to control print density the printer adjusts the voltage on the cartridge corona wire according to how much toner it thinks the cartridge contains. When you lie to the printer it may affect print quality. If you really want to run cartridges 'dry' it might be better to reset the cartridge when it is part used so the voltage is a bit out most of the time rather than completely out when you reset at the end. If someone here has a nearly empty cartridge to reset a before and after print quality comparison would be interesting.

Shows in stock but it's not, I ordered this on Wednesday got a phone call to say it's out of stock & looking at a 2 week wait so I cancelled it. I have one of these and it's been great. However, check the size and weight - they're *big*. Also, if I was buying now, I'd go for one of the Brother multi-function colour lasers that have a £100 cashback promotion on at the moment. 8400CDN, not wireless, single side copy and scanning only, duplex print, £2 cheaper.

8650CDW, wireless, duplex scan, duplex print.

I think it is clear which one is the winner. Why cut out so many functions to save £2?

I'd assumed that the 8400CDN did 2-sided scanning and copying as it appears to have the same ADF unit. Good spot - that makes the 8650CDW a much better buy - and it has been cheaper than the 8400CDN in the last month or so.

You don't need reset gears. Toner cartridges can be reset from the printer controls. That place is also expensive, £66 for set of toner refill bottles when you can a set of re-manufactured cartridges on ebay from £45.

Would you please explain how the toner cartridges can be reset from the printer controls. I can't see anything in the manual except being told to have a new cartridge ready, as it won't print once you get the replace toner cartridge message?

How many refills do you get for your £17.50? If it's only one then I can't see the point when you can get compatible cartridges for less than £15. Less waste, I suppose.

What are the advantages of the MFC-9330CDW over the HL-L8250CDN.
I don't know much about printers and having trouble seeing the difference between the two.

Also... the 100 cashback for the MFC-9330CDW... Does this apply these purchased from any online uk retailer?

I wouldn't touch a Brother printer. I have a L8650CDW that is a little under three years old and the insides are literally disintegrating in on themselves. There are metal clips that have collapsed through the rollers making it pretty much unusable now. I am very disappointed and had no interest from Brother on why such a catastrophic failure (yes out of warranty) has happened. Of course I also recently replaced the toners that will no go in the bin.
If anyone can recommend a replacement let me know.
My point is though if the more expensive 8650 falls apart what chance does this cheaper model have?

I've had two HL-l8250CDN models - first one the fuser unit went, at around 12000 pages (1-2 yr use) so I switched to my replacement I bought as a back up. Both cheap enough, but I then needed another back up in case that went wrong.

Not sure about your needs, but I ended up going up a few steps, but went used instead. I bought a used low page count HP CP4525 from Ebay for £160. It's a proper workhorse. 500 sheet feeder (useful for me as I was printing 250+ pages a day for packing slips), 10000 page toners, and 40ppm.

I found that the Brother printer took a lot longer than the quoted 28ppm when pages were large (memory wise), I think it might be due to lower memory. The HP does get near 40ppm, and quicker to start printing. A set of compatibles for the HP is £100-£150 (although not bought a set yet) but that's 10,000 pages so comparable if not cheaper than brother where it's £50 for a set, but 3-4000 pages.

Obviously no scanner, so if that's a requirement might need another option.
