For those who don't know how to become a student, and become eligible for an NUS/NUS Extra card, here's how in 3 simple steps:

1. Purchase the £4 eCareers course, found on GoGroupie here:

gogroopie.com/dea…rse

2. Activate your voucher instantly on the eCareers website:

e-careers.co.uk/red…her

When scrolling through the T&Cs, only accept the FIRST box, or you will have to wait 7 days before you can access your course.

3. Once your course has been activated and assigned (you will receive an email) navigate to NUS and sign up as a student. Be sure to select eCareers as your place of study, the card itself should cost £12.00.

Link: cards.nusextra.co.uk/?ut…tra

NUS may check your eligibility with eCareers, so make sure your data (Name, DOB etc.) match up!

An alternative is to purchase this Shaw Academy course for £1.99 saving you £2.01 on this deal;

gogroopie.com/dea…99_? obviously if you go for the shaw academy course, you must pick shaw academy as your place of study when signing up with NUS.

List of discounts here:

nus.org.uk/en/…ts/

My few favs:

Co-op 10% off bill including alcohol!

50% Spotify subscription discount

25% off National Rail

Amazon Prime Student Membership (6 months free + £35 a year)

50% off Pizza Express

10% off Asos

The card essentially pays for itself.

25% off National Express rather than National Rail?

- Daywalker04

Also can be used at Cinema's to get student price tickets

- RCUK

Quidco 8.8% on GoGroopie - Tracking 35p for the £4 course.

- W1zz

If you sign up for Amazon Student, then you can use code APPRENTICE10 for a £10 off (credit goes to someone in this thread; don't know the t&c); thanks!

- daydreamer44

ISIC gives discounts at Apple (10%), Creative cloud (student rates).

benefits.isic.org/en/…eUK

benefits.isic.org/en/…obe

- AR2012

There is £1.50 for P&P,so the card registration works out £13.50 not £12

I'm also having problems getting the discount for Spotify through NUS (my course is through ecareers).
Really disappointing as I'm already a premium user and was hoping to save £60/year

I've signed up for this course and I've been waiting on my start details. However, after putting in the closest details to the actual course, the NUS site allows me to proceed to pay for my card. I don't know whether or not the details I've gone with are even valid but I can still buy the card with them. I put down computer science as the course as I felt it was the closest thing to it and my e-careers password as the password that it asked me for.

If I can actually go through with the payment for the card, can it be refused at any point?

"Amazon Prime benefits received through the Amazon Student programme can't be shared with another Amazon account. Anyone who you currently share benefits with will no longer have access to shared Prime benefits once you sign up to Amazon Student."

I'm curious what happens to accounts you linked before the new credit card sharing family connection type came into play; do the older type of linked Amazon accounts get disconnected too?

Download nus extra app if you have a tablet and in your account you will see an image from the card along with membership number. Snapshot that from the tablet and you can then attach that to an email to Amazon. You should be able to google these instructions on how to do this if you've never done this before. Hope that helps

This still works. Got NUS membership yesterday, but it says card will be delivered in seven days or more. Amazon asks for image of card. The NUS confirmation email gives details but not an image of the card. Is there anywhere on the NUS site that has the image of my NUS membership card?

I managed to get a 15% off Dell Outlet Student Discount code around a week ago. Just speak to them via the online chat, then they'll ask you to send them an email with the chat session ID and a picture of your NUS card. ..never mind! If you go for the Alumni option, you can only sign up for an extra year.

So I did the Shaw Academy route instead, with a new course, and bought a three year card on the spot. Great! Thanks again OP!

(No .ac.uk option, but for £33 you can't really complain)

5 Apr 17 #534
Has anyone mentioned about three year courses available yet to get a three year NUS card yet?

I did this last year and only signed up for a one year card, but I think I'd like to save myself the hassle of renewing as these things are great. Mine paid for itself instantly and I of course still got discounts on top of that afterwards as the year went on.

Only thing is I wouldn't know what course to sign up for. One that gives you an ac.uk email address would be great so I could sign up for Unidays but I think that'll be unlikely..

For dumb people like me, when you are registering on the NUS site, on the second page when you are asked about the place of study, type @Ecareers to choose ecareers. I was pulling my hair for last 3 days to past that stage.

I am not sure if it matters but I chose 3 years of study duration.. now sure if NUS really checks anything

sabresonic
7 Mar 17 #486
Correct. It fell quite nicely for me as I only had about a week of my non student Prime left and was faced with renewing it again for £79...glad I finally got round to doing it. And as mentioned you can renew for a further 3 years after your 6 months free and first paid year of Student Prime comes to an end. Which I'll do as I also don't want to try and circumvent the system and I wanted to continue with my current email address and connection to all my years of buying activity off Amazon. I find their customer services are pretty good and when they look back through all my past history when I have had need to contact them its always ended positively for me.
sabresonic
7 Mar 17 #485
I listed my Shaw Academy course in social media was from Mar 17 to Mar 18 (it is in fact a month or at least you have a month to complete the on-line course at your leisure). That was to get the actual NUS Extra card.

For Amazon Prime see my post #481...it seemed irrespective of how long the course was, I listed it the same as I did for the card i.e. 1 year, you are then able to continue to renew for a further 3 years so 4 years (+ 6 months initially free) of Amazon Prime Student in total.

Hope that helps.

I have been seeing these NUS Extra card posts for some time now and thought it would be too complicated to get Amazon Prime Student membership but it was actually fairly simple when it came to doing it. I did it it in an afternoon...I didn't have to wait for 7 days for the Shaw Academy course to be activated.

5 Mar 17 #483
So you didn't need to cancel your non-student prime and it was automatically refunded? Mine is due to renew in a few weeks, so was thinking of using this and timing it closer to the renewal date rather than mess around refunding. If you get a further 3 after the initial year that will be great as signing up for new address every year to get a new trial could be seen as trying to circumvent the system.

Just an FYI. I think I read this somewhere on HUKD but not sure if it was in this post and can't be bothered to read back through 480 comments. I signed up successfully via the Shaw Academy route, was pre-approved by Amazon after sending a screenshot of my NUS Extra details to them, as mentioned in this post.

After following the link Amazon CS sent me (the one that states you are pre-approved and no need for the .ac.uk email), it mentioned that I would receive a refund on my existing Prime membership. I stated my Shaw Academy course was 1 year in length however in the small print it said after the free 6 month trial I can remain and renew Student Prime membership for 4 years.

So, if you didn't want to mess around buying another course, maybe using a different email address to get the 6 months free trial again, you will be offered to renew your Student Prime for a further 3 years at £39 once your first year comes to an end.

How do you get a discount at Apple if you do have this NUS extra card but no educational email address?

Can this be used to then set up a student bank account? I am guessing it can't cause you need UCAS but would be nice to know

25 Feb 17 #462
Good idea...I only signed up for 1 year, you only save £4 I think signing up for 3. So, I guess in 18 months (if they haven't placed some restrictions on NUS Extra card members) you could use a different email address and start from scratch and get 6 months free + 12 months for £39. It seems from some comments that you are offered the Amazon Prime Student membership again at the end of your initial year. I'll keep that it mind, thanks.

25 Feb 17 #461
Would it be better to sign up to the NUS card for 1 year and then do it again every year to get the Amazon Prime free for 6 months each time?

I'm assuming if you sign up for 3 years then you could only get the Amazon Prime free for 6 months just the once?

Glad to have helped. When searching on the NUS page, remember it's "The Shaw Academy" not simply Shaw Academy.

Thanks, I think I just needed to know this was still working and that Amazon hadn't put a stop on people using this method. I did this purely for the Amazon Prime which having sent through a screenshot of the NUS card app to Amazon CS, I was pre-approved for and now have 14 days to use the link they sent me and sign up - with the free 6 month trial. As I already had a normal trial before taking my current Prime membership out I wasn't sure from reading someone's comment here that I would be eligible for the trial. It falls nicely as my normal Prime comes to an end on the 12th March.

I also bagged the 2 months NowTV Movies and 2 months Entertainment for £1 per month each which pretty much means the card has paid for itself even before Amazon Prime! I've been reading these posts for so long now, I'm pleased I eventually put some time aside to enrol etc and it was far less of a chore than I expected it to be.

Savings of over £200 over 3 years just from Spotify and Amazon Prime

I am only 3 months into a paid Prime account....
UPDATE: Went ahead and bought the eCareers course and the NUS card. Did the App screen capture thing and emailed it to Amazon CS advising I wanted to convert my existing Prime to Student Prime. They pre-approved the Student trial and I just signed up to the Student Prime trial immediately.
Also, got an email that a refund on my existing Prime service has been requested and I should get it soon!

I logged into Spotify and went to my subscription. I cancelled the subscription (took a few pages and clicks). The remaining part of your current subscription still stands.

Then I logged into NUSExtra and went through the Spotify link, logged in with my Spotify details and added my credit card, NUS number and date of birth. Hit continue and sure enough it shows that my current subscription ends on 20th February and the new payment will be £4.99 from then.

I've had my Amazon account over 10 years. Have Amazon Prime, but just got this NUS card. Took screenshot of the card details on iOS NUS Extra app (physical card in Post). Sent this, with email to Amazon requesting my account be changed to Amazon Student and got a reply within the hour to say it's been done. 6 months free and £39 after August.
The email reply also gave the student Amazon sign up link, but mentioned I had been pre-authorised and to use my gmail details where it asked for ac.uk address.
They didn't mention anything about a refund of existing Prime membership (Paid until June) so sent second email enquiring if the amount will appear as credit or be refunded.
A few hours later I got reply saying this will be refunded.
Also used the Apprentice10 code last night, no problem.

Just bagged my self a free shower hose that a needed. In addition her in doors uses kindle unlimited, usually £7.99 a month but with this £39 for whole year. Easily paid for itself already. Students over 25 are eligible for 16-25 Railcard (I had one when I was 43):

"To be eligible as a mature student and buy a 1-year Railcard, you will need:
To be attending a recognised college or university, for over 15 hours a week, at least 20 weeks a year. Unfortunately, Open University, distance learning and part-time courses do not qualify.
To have the mature student section of the 16-25 Railcard application form completed by your College or University.
Have an NUS card or College/University photocard as proof of identity.

That's odd, I've done a few courses with them in the past it was always 8 lessons over 4 weeks as they always do 2 a week so wonder if that's just a mistake on the email? The course itself was genuinely really good by the way, had just bought my first DSLR and it was the perfect guide to getting me up and running fully manual and taking decent pics in a few weeks. The Lightroom course was also really good, although some of the webinar tutors are more engaging than others so it does depend who you get - overall though I can't fault them, learnt a lot for nothing.

Just saw some NUS info on SuperSavvy including free courses with Shaw Academy:

1, Sign up to one of these online courses http://****/6611fe27
cheapest ones for £1.99 are here http://****/36051c4b
OR
A FREE Beauty course http://****.com/h96p2u2
2, Go to cards.nusextra.co.uk/ , and when prompted to enter "place of study" type The Shaw Academy or Ecareers . It will appear in the drop down box for you to select.
3, Enter your course dates, and what you are studying, if it isn't there enter "other" "other"
3, Pay your money £12 for 1 year, £22 for 2 years or £32 for 3 years.
You will now be sent a student card, which you can use for student discounts.

Do you have any idea how long it takes for the activation or email.

Enter your email address, you do not get a student number with Shaw Academy.

If you're getting a error when trying to validate your code you've probably purchased a Shaw Academy course and are trying to redeem it via e-Careers. Instead of using the link in this deal, click the big green "Redeem your voucher" link in the email you receive from Shaw Academy.

I did this last year, its worked well everywhere I tried. Got the discount on the Dell outlet and the student Amazon membership, plus loads more. NickyOhMG
8 Feb 17 #262
Never seen that info and never had an option to get a longer expiry! All it's done is saved my student course info for three years but only allows me a card one year at a time or I would've requested a longer expiry to save the yearly replacement hassle.

May possibly depend on the establishment you choose to 'study' with and their terms as I used my local college and I'm guessing they will share 'student' data yearly rather than confirming someone is a student for three years in advance as college can change yearly whilst university tends to be long term and online courses usually offer lifetime access.

Spending £1,499 to get a £16 NUS card might negate the benefits, slightly...?
NickyOhMG
8 Feb 17 #237
NUS are clearly aware of the whole situation but as more and more colleges and universities are withdrawing from the scheme (as it costs them tens of thousands per annum to be part of) they are having to push through all applications to increase revenue.

Stores don't mind much either as they always have funds available to subsidise affiliates, marketing promotions and member discounts like this card offers and any stores that didn't want to be giving 10% away to everyone have already left.

So no need to be a law abiding citizen when you're helping keep NUS afloat for the students. You can update us all when you pass your course and cancel your card just to be sure you don't use it for longer than you are a student. Good luck!

8 Feb 17 #208
Correct. I purchased and eCareers course that had dates of one year. I entered that into the NUS Extra purchase process and they allowed me to purchase a 3 year card.

Regarding people's comments not needing to buy a course - this has been previously discussed. It MAY work fine but £2/4 is a small price to pay for people who want to do things legitimately. Legally speaking it's a bit of a grey area to buy a course with the intention of never doing it just to get a discount card, but not even buying the course and typing in random details is definitely dodgy.

Think I may have done something wrong but I made sure everything was correct

I already had a card (1 year sub) which was expiring in a few days, decided to just extend it and get 3 years.

Looked into my account and it states:

Online Free ISIC Card

Date 08/02/2017
Reference Number xxxxxxxxxx
Card Number 98xxxxxxxxx
Expiry Date 12/02/2020
Isic Number S0----------
Isic Expiry Date 08/02/2018
Delivery Address ------------------
Order Status Date
Placed 08/02/2017 18:00:19
Paid Awaiting Receipt 08/02/2017 18:02:14
Paid Awaiting Print 08/02/2017 18:02:14

Why is the Isic expiry date 08/02/2018 ? Does it just mean I have to apply again for the card in a year and as I've paid for 3 years it just refreshes?

Ok, so already have an NUS card linked to a college that I'm a few exams away from completing a course.
Problem is that due to work, I'm no longer affiliated with the college and it would cost a fortune for the final year.
It was a few years ago now, so no longer have/remember my college email and most retailers require going through Unidays, which doesn't accept Shaw Academy. Thinking of an Apple purchase, any suggestions?
Regards.

As evo mentioned earlier, that is classed as fraud by deception. If you would like to legitimately, ethically and legally acquire an NUS card follow the instructions in the post. For a mere £2-4 you are legitimately becoming a student, thus nothing will ever go wrong. Plus, no chance of your card being cancelled etc

No. They would require proof of income along with Student Loan information and college enrolment evidence from a Government authorised place of education. These kind of courses are for people to do in spare time you need to be in full time education where you attend physical premises.

The card itself is nothing more than a discount card it is not a matriculation card and not proof of being a student. You may at any time be asked to show your student ID along with this card to receive 10% off from co-op or cineworld so imagine what would happen at the council tax office!! (_;)

You can apply for an NUS Extra card as an alumni.

well that was easy.

1. Sign up to the free photography course at Shaw Academy (didn't give my main mobile number on that so don't get pestered)
2. Bought NUS Extra card on the site, used dates of Feb 17 to Feb 18, used my email address for student number (I think it asked me that anyway), and for qualification type etc I chose Other/Other and uploading my sexy passport picture .
3. Installed the NUS Extra app on my phone, logging in to that I was able to see the full details with picture of the card and my NUS card number.
4. Emailed amazon the picture to the signup email address mentioned in earlier posts. 10 minutes later I got an approved email from Amazon.
5. Signed up to Amazon using the link in the email (chose Other/Other again and kept dates the same)

Other half said "Cool I'm dating a student again!" (!) I've never been a student when we've been together

NickyOhMG
8 Feb 17 #66
You need to join a Government recognised education establishment to obtain an AC.UK email. Therefore becoming a legitimate student at a full time college or university with a high street presence is the only way to obtain one. You would have to sign up for a low qualification at college and attend for a few days to get enrolled then leave! In Scotland this be free but not sure elsewhere. You can't just buy one off eBay so wave goodbye to unidays lol.

Rubbish, unless somebody at NUSX has recently decreed that they shall activey strive to reduce their revenue from subs. We've been here many times before. There is zero requirement to buy any course nor be studying to apply and obtain an NUS card. The requirements appear to simply be the ability to upload a JPEG photo of anything and ability to throw £12 at a website. To prove a point: my cat has an NUSX card - complete with cute photo and uttlerly implausible but obviously acceptable-to-NUS name similar to Mee Yau.

If you have ever been a student before u can register for an NUS ALUMNI card, exactly the same discounts and you don't need to buy a course first. Just put your DOB in instead of your old student number if u can't find it and it works.
