Thanks, I bought them as walkie talkies so I'm happy enough with them, just need to repair my proper scanner instead.

yes i did however as the docking space was so large the radios kept aligning diagonally hence charging made the effort a pain in the bum.

They will only scan within the frequencies listed i.e. PMR446 and 2 meter ranges and no they are very poor at this becuase of the slow scan rate.

Had to return back to Amazon as Base Charge Units are so obviously not the original supplied and do not hold the Radios correctly making charging hit and miss at best.

Thinking of returning mine as they are complete overkill for the casual use I'll get out of them.
Did you ensure they slotted into the guiding rails ?

Warranty is directly from Baofeng once you register it.

So can these be programmed to scan other frequencies?
There's talk about reprogramming and installing other software, but I'm not sure if that would enable scanning of other frequency ranges.
Our local airport is on 119.5 but these don't seem to cover that range.
I do have a handheld yupiteru but I've let the batteries corrode a bit and am looking for an alternative.

Not really much good as scanner as scan speed is about 3 channels per second which is very slow
Also if it could scan on air frequency,s you would really need to lock out transmit on these frequency

Be aware there ware many fake Baofeng radios sold even on Amazon usually the issue only comes to light when the programming cable is unable to access the firmware.

So are these good to go (ie legal) out of the box ?

Not technically. You need a radio license. If they're programmed to PMR frequencies as suggested. It needs to be 0.5w. And the radio is 1W.

Had these for years dont come programmed to 446 mhz though but easy program PMR channels and CTSS
Also useful in USA on FRS and GMRS Frequencies .Handy with mobiles been expensive to use over there

I own about 40 of the higher model of Baofeng UV-5RE radios for work purposes. They have excellent build quantity and have never let me down. (Apart from 1, which had a manufacturing defect and was replaced) Come with 2 years warranty too. I would recommend these to anyone.

Is that 2yr warranty with baofeng and do you need to register for it? Thanks

So you can program them to work on standard 2way radio frequencies. If you wanted to use them with other people on normal 8 channel 446MHz radios. Pretty sure mine were on some other channels as default...
guide on programming, the legality side is for american market I believe.

If this is the same as the one last week, i recall the programming cable was somewhat essential?

to get the best, a high gain antenna would be a good addition.
