Lowest price that I have noticed for quite sometime now for sim free.. Great price compared to Apple store price or prices at other outlets (retailing at John Lewis and Tesco for 579 currently).
I know at John Lewis you would get a 2 year warranty but then this is massive savings on the latest iPhone... maybe helps someone!!

Would someone care to explain to me the point of buying the latest overpriced phone . Be it Apple or Android . My Galaxy S5 (bought from a mate who got an upgrade a year or so ago for £50) , presumably to look good in front of your mates (actually it makes you look a tool - they all know you have it on contract and cant really afford it !) . And why do folks risk buying one off Gumtree etc (only to find its blocked weeks later- stolen or insurance scam ) - Or even buy a Chinese one full of Malware and no EU warranty  .
Think about it - your current phone plays games, connects to the internet and ...........err send and receives texts . It probably even enables you to make phone calls  - now that's a novelty -Not ! .
Beats me why folks have to have the latest phone - and get well and truly fleeced - I just wish I could understand the logic behind buying/ renting something you cannot afford just to be perceived (wrongly ) to be cool , maybe someone could explain .

For me personally I got my first iPhone when the 4 was released, I resisted until then mainly holding out for the better screen (Retina) which arrived with that model. That lasted me 4-5 years but gradual wear-and-tear coupled with the advancement of technology meant I got a new iPhone last year. Stuck with Apple because I do find the phones to be especially intuitive. We did had an Android mid-range Samsung tablet for a while and I found it to be quite a bit less user friendly - far too much that could be fiddled around with in the interface, not nearly so user-friendly, generally quite a buggy and irritating experience - so I stuck with the iPhone.
Also I went for a 64gb model as I was finding that the 16gb was getting filled so fast with photos/videos (bearing in mind I had a few games, some music, some TV/films on there) that upgrade was needed too.
Does that help?

With that deal it was actually cheaper than similar "no name " bags that fall apart after a couple of months . Glad you noticed that deal (less than half price for a Nike cart bag ). And yes still going strong with no faults after 6 months (as you would expect from Nike stuff)

Why do people buy new phones because they might have too much money and don't know what to do with it. I am looking at my £50 phone that works and will consider buying a iPhone 7 when the price comes down ok. Why are you so interested in knowing what people buy and if they can afford it, that's not your problem you should focus on your life and don't look at other people's they are probably more richer than you

I prefer to spend my dosh on overpriced golf clubs and golf equipment ( and I buy them for cash -not on a contract or credit card ) . So I believe you misread my question - Why do folks "need " the latest phone they cannot afford ? What does it do that their current phone can't do ? I'm just curious .
OK I spend £300 on a new driver - as it will propel the ball 5yds further and straighter ( Sadly it doesn't ) - But I pay hard earned cash for it . Is paying £40 per month for the latest phone a cheap way of " keeping up with Jones's" or are we being conned by the sales blurb ? To be fair Apple or Samsung wouldn't last long if we were all , as I suggest , happy with our current phones (as I am with my 2014 vintage one ) . No need to try to be clever (and failing) I'm just asking a pertinent question .

So your 'mate' gets an upgrade, I presume, to a phone you'd consider to be 'over priced and unneccesary' and then offers you a chance to buy a perfectly useable phone, I would have thought , that you being a 'mate' would have talked him out of upgrading rather than fleecing him for a bargain yourself.... No.... ?
If people never upgraded, there would be no 2nd hand bargains for the rest of us would there? We'd all still be using an Iphone 3g, a Nexus or an S1....
Upgrades are required depending on your use, but a phone is no longer just a phone, it is a phone/camera/games console/media player/portable computer...

Better Battery life, better processor speeds for quicker and more responsive experience, more ram, better quality screen with increased pixel density, bigger screen for an easier to use interface, better gaming and video watching experience, as a trend more memory, quicker memory in the form of flash drives, and maybe something else down the line, better speakers, louder speakers, much better camera, including higher resolution video, and better slow motion video and much better low light settings, and of course better microphones so when you're making those phone calls people can hear you better.
Lots of other new things are also coming out with new phones as well such as fast, dash and wireless charging, and also in response to your point about memory being pointless if the phone is dropped, new designs that allows things like ip67 water resistance and gorilla glass 5 making newer phones more durable and long lasting than ever before, so no matter where you drop it the memory will be just fine.
But if you ask me I don't really see the point in having a newer phone, it's all just about it being flashy these days

As someone who is incredibly interested in mobile technology, I'm well aware of the quality of components that go into smart phones, as well as production quality. When you are involved in this and read/watch many many reviews like I have, you start to understand them a little more. If what you want from a phone is to text, make calls, browse Facebook, and play some light games, then you won't need a top of the line phone (which an iPhone is not) but, if, like me, you would prefer your every day device that you use for almost anything to have the best performance to price ratio, the best option is a new phone at those high prices. Now, the only phone that is actually close to being worth so much would be the Galaxy S7. With the ram, processor, camera and other features like waterproofing etc, it is easily up there. Now, I myself wouldn't spend £500 - £700 on a phone. Instead, I purchased a "Chinese one", however, it provides the same components as the S7, bar the camera, and it also doesn't have waterproofing, which, at this moment in time, doesn't bother me. And it cost me £350. Almost half the price. If you shop smart (when incredibly interested in the smartphone industry) then you won't get "fleeced". And, some people, like myself, like to play games on phones, such as emulators, which require a lot of performance and power which older handsets can't provide. Just my 2 cents I guess

26 Feb 17#28
Nice sweeping generalisation there. I buy all my handsets outright. As to why? Same reason as anyone buys anything they can afford - because I can.

Hate Apple, but heat given because I hate rogparki more (and it's a good price if you're an Apple fan).
My S6 edge (bought outright near launch) can do everything I need, but that doesn't stop me looking at the latest technology... which I'm sure rogparki can understand: "OK I spend £300 on a new driver - as it will propel the ball 5yds further and straighter ( Sadly it doesn't )".
Now I have no interest in expensive golf clubs because I don't have the skill to extract the full benefits of owning them... instead I use a cricket bat; I can hit the ball in generally the right direction and it gets the job done (albeit a little slower than your £300 driver).

26 Feb 171#31
My reason is that it is probably the most important purchase I can make relative to the cost. I use my phone for hours a day (as sad as that is but thats the modern world) and rely on it for practically everything. Checking news, weather, directions, bus times, shopping, organising events, listening to music, watching tv, taking photos/videos, chatting with friends etc etc. When you use something that much you really want to have a device that makes all that as fast, easy and efficient as possible. Sure you can do it all for cheaper but the experience just won't be as good, and when you use something so much, small flaws can become very frustrating over time

Why are you making the assumption that people cannot afford them? I tend to buy my handsets outright. However if I took a contract it would be because the handset:tariff ratio was value for money.
Your assumptions on people not being able to afford them reflects more on your own personal situation I think. You dont use credit, well done you!
You don't understand why people buy new handsets , fine! I don't understand golf clubs or football shirts but I don't question people or assume that they can't afford things and build up credit...
Tl:dr don't worry about other people's spending habits, buy what you want and let others do the same, if they get themselves in debt/trouble it's not your problem.

This probably would've been an alright question if you hadn't been a presumptuous a** with comments like 'to look cool in front of your mates' and 'because you can't afford it and bought it on contract', which I bet is not even true for the majority here.
Well, I spend £800 on a phone because it's something I use daily without fail, probably one of the most well used items in my life so I think £1-2 a day (which is how it works out over the lifetime of a product) is actually a good price to pay. I can save/make the same money in a day by not buying my morning coffee, working a little harder or just finding the money amidst other income. That £800 at Apple got me great customer service and EU Consumer Law coverage which is basically 6 years warranty (as Apple honours it for the original owner) so I have guaranteed low TCO. As you probably worked out, I can afford to buy it outright, not on contract.
Nothing wrong with you buying an S5, but since you're so well informed I'm sure you already know that you'll be running an older version of Android so you're more susceptible to security flaws, if your phone goes bad you have little path of recourse and well, all your friends will leave you as you have an old phone :stuck_out_tongue:

Some time ago (not so long really, it's only been like 4-5 months I'm settled with Nexus 6p) I have been changing phones every 2-3 months for the very simple reason that I got bored of them. I've been through most flagship handsets available during last 3 years including iPhones, Samsungs, lgs, sonys, htcs etc. They all sent texts, they all made calls and surprise surprise, they all allowed connection to the internet. Totally not a show off, just a geek nature. Anyway, to the point. The fact that YOU don't see the need to have the latest, best, biggest, whatever you name it, does not mean that other people should do so as well. A simple analogy I can think of, why do people buy new cars if their former 52 plate polo was still able to take them from point A to point B? I believe you catch my drift now. Where I come from we say, if a person stays still, they actually go backwards. The keyword here is progress.
Cheers
P.s. not trying to say your approach is bad, following the analogy I'm perfectly happy with my 07 civic and totally don't feel the need of buying a new one, even though many people in my circumstances would. Just whatever tickles your nipples mate

well I got my theory.
Did you ever notice that all the shops in shopping center might be empty but Accessorize is full?
Well people want to afford stuff, probably flashy stuff and it would mean most often new stuff. But of course there is always some kind of ceiling. If you can't afford home you go into debt to get car, if you can't get car you ll get new phone. If you can't get new phone you go to Accessorize to treat yourself with new nice shiny headband (ok for girls really  ).
I'm just surprised you haven't hear about it. It's consumptionism and term is there for ages.
On the other side I wonder how many people buying fancy stuff found on HDUK say in mixed gender company "look this xxxx I got trough hkud with massive reduction". Genuine question but rethorical. Some fruits, soft and pleasant inside (invisible part) are usually protected by very strong, tough and unpleasant certain cover (visible part) until someone discovers its nature, conquers it and enjoys it. Otherwise it may become quite vulnerable to many worthless, bad mannered threats coming from outsider world.
On the other hand many fruits will also be pleasant, juicy, attractive "by looking" on cover (visible part) when inside they hold an unpleasant, tough, arrogant piece of trap (invisible part) which may cause you to break your tooth and suffer "IF you don't know it". All we know from documentaries shown on the TV that these are the most attractive and pleasant by looking but poisonous and murderous ones inside. We have plenty of them around.
Most of people will do their investment on expensive material because they know the wast majority (so their target) is attracted by it.Targets usually expect that visual material to reflect the genuine character of its owner however, this is rarely correct.
On the other hand someone who makes his/her investments on the inner, invisible part ( love, kindness, understanding, compromising etc) won't care much about the simple cover because as a matter of fact if you know yourself well, you won't really need to prove this to others by anything, especially by expensive material.
It is simple materialistic world which feeds itself by its freewill(?) slave fellow(er)s that others with conscience needs around in order to figure out knowing what isn't right.
If you are not happy innerly when you are with people that are close to you, that know and love you, for example at home, then does it really matter how many unknown people from outer world "think that you are"? Does being among unknown bunch of people who doesn't hold an important part in your personal life brings you a certain and constant happiness? Or is this just a tricky way of lying yourself to keep playing the game of the "happy one"? Can you feel the cruel but real weakness in this statement?
If we put a piece of stone in a golden gift box that stone won't become a jewel however a diamond will still remain as a diamond even in a cardboad box.
Obviously, people after shiny attractive and expensive stuff are doing this for their own reason but whoever knows that, knows it for a reason too.
