OK, it's not a 'deal' but finally after what seems like forever since it came out in the USA the all new more powerful FireTV stick with full Alexa comes to Amazon UK!
It's sometimes referred to as the Fire TV Stick '2' by reviewers and bloggers when it came out in the USA last year as it's the 2nd generation of the FireTV stick but it's not actually called that by Amazon, they just call it the "all new Fire TV stick".
Pre-order now, says launching on April 6th but that might change and become earlier.
I'll be getting one or two of them because after using the FireTV 2 (box) I sometimes find my original FireTV stick slow and laggy. The new stick will be somewhat closer to the experience on the Fire TV 2 box.
It's not 4K but that's not important to me as I'm no longer blessed with 20:20 vision and never sit close enough to the TV to be able to tell the difference between HD and 4K anyway! Also, here in Cyprus, 4K normally refers to the average monthly salary of civil servants, or the average annual salary of someone working in the private sector!

I got 2 from the states on black Friday when they were $25 it's quicker to move around the amazon home screen menu and they've changed the interface of the home screen but I don't find any difference in the actual video playback.

As far as I understand it's a newer processor, supports AC networks and x265 decoding natively for up to 1080p videos. I will be getting one or two to replace my current sticks but only when there they have an offer on.
Really think in 2017 this should be including 4K support by now, otherwise very little reason to buy it over the old version IMHO. Yes, I know not many have 4K sets but no harm in being future proofed and as all 4K devices are fully backwards compatible with 1080P sets thanks to HDMI, you lose nothing by using a 4K device on a 1080P set.
I used to have the fire TV stick and found it fine, didn't seem slow to me, though I wasn't doing anything demanding on it. upgraded to the fire TV box, which can do 4K despite being going on for two years old!, which makes this not supporting it look even worse....

Amazon don't even have Kodi on there store anymore lol. I installed it that long ago I can't even have it on my apps when side loaded.
I'll be all over this new stick when its out, shame its gone up a fiver but does have the newer remote whats cool if you have prime, but then again you could install the app on your phone for free and that lets you voice command

The Fire sticks touted as the portable go anywhere solution, the box is the stay at home version with more ports such as SD storage, Ethernet and digital out.
4K needs around 15 mbs data rate, Ofcom reports the UK average is 28Mbs, but that's an average, many people wont get the bandwidth needed to use 4K for a few years, and as you mention by the time people do and if they have upgraded the telly then replacing a £30 stick isn't much.
Heck by the time you have the bandwidth and the TV maybe 8K will be the standard, or the 11K Samsung were working on or so in...
Amazon also make these to a cost, and delimits there in the range. Putting a faster CPU and more memory in costs money, so why would they make a Firestick that may cannabise the sales of the Fire TV Box?

I would definitely answer that question if I knew what it meant but I'm an old granny who just watches films etc on kodi. I find going through the menu is quicker but the video playback seems to be just the same as on the original firestick which has always worked perfectly for me.

If you want 4k you need a 60"+ TV in the standard size living room to even notice the difference between Full HD and 4K, biggest marketing scam of the decade. Shame no HDR but for £40 it's a cheap Alexa with video content too so heat from me!

4K, 8K, whatever, is just a new reason to sell TV's, from Stereo, NICAM, Dolby Prologic, Freeview, Freesat, 720, 1080, IPTV, HD,3D 4K, and so on there always has to be a reason for people to upgrade, rather than keep the current TV till it dies then replace it..

My original Fire Stick is definitely starting to run slow now. It's also pretty awful at picking up my wifi at times. One day it works fine another its keeps losing the network. On my main tv I have the box and it is hardwired so no wifi issues. Wonder if this will be an improvement over the old one.

Probably, There were reports that Amazon had blocked some of the methods used to install Kodi on the Firestick V1 in the OS update on the Firestick 2, although other reports say Amazon simply moved the places the options were found. There are reports of an install being possible via ESFile explorer on on US Firestick 2 devices.
However its not released here till April, and while its unlikely Amazon will have significantly changed the device for the UK market, there's nothing to stop Amazon blocking the install methods used.
If Amazon choose to remove the Dev access or the ability to add 3rd party add ons then sideloading would become very difficult, after all Amazon see this as a way to drive people to the Amazon Prime / Amazon TV service, just like the Kindles purpose is to drive people to buy books from Amazon only.
Only way to be certain is for someone to try after they are released here..

I've installed kodi on 2 new firesticks I got in the us by downloading the kodi apk to my android phone then using apps2fire to upload it to the firestick then install it from es file explorer. I've also installed mobdro using this method.

Thanks, I might try it plugged in instead then. I got the usual warning that the USB wasn't giving enough power but just ignored it. Never thought this might be causing the issues.

Thanks, I didnt know that. My Echo Dot has reacted to things even without the Alexa prefix. It's quite near my tv speakers and the other day it started babbling about National Rail or something. I looked on the app to see what it had heard and it showed it heard "National Rail" and had enabled some rail update service or something.

One kindle book per month in U.K.
You can share Prime with family members in U.K.
Not sure it's worth the extra though....

I understood what you meant :smiley: The question is will Amazon alter up upgrade the sticks OS before the UK release. They may just alter the language settings to UK English rather than US English, but they could use the launch to deploy the "new" software version that may change how Kodi canbe installed.
As I said I doubt it but until April its an unknown.

They "may" do, they may also prevent the Kodi executable being run on their version of Android in the same way as they killed Firestarter. They may also kill Modbro, Showbox etc etc. They may switch off completely the ability to install non-App Store APKs. They may do a lot of things at release or at some time in the future through an OS upgraded. I think the Op posted a very good data point, Amazon focus on new stuff in their home market and try to copy paste to other countries.
