I've just switched away from TSB having had it since last year (gone with HSBC Advance, £200 cashback in total). The 5% contactless purchases works out at a max of a fiver a month, and that expires in September, so eight month's worth = £40.

Btw, perfectly fine, just tarting my current account around for various switching bonuses. Nice, clean app for banking too. Only switched away as my contactless thing has expired and they've reduced the interest rate. No complaints about them while I've been with them.

I think anything over £1500 earns no interest regardless of where the money comes from.
The T&Cs on mse state that the two direct debits have to be active for 28 days after the switch to get your £125 payment. I think as long as you have two you should be fine.

Have you any idea if "£45 interest on a £1500 balance) in your first year" does that include interest on my switched balance or do you think thats only for any payments into tsb account from now onwards?
Also you or anyone else in this thread no if i were to cancel a couple of my direct debits before the first month of opening this Tsb account still leaving at least two other direct debits active will this void my £125 switching Bonus?

Folks, I have a question.

For some reason I'm having trouble with the direct debit requirement.

I switched my paypal DD to the old account and have made 2 transactions but it's still not showing up on old account as DD! Dunno what's happened but paypal seem to have taken money from the ether as the backup credit card has not been charged either.

The other DD I've changed to the old account is not due to be debited till the 21st March or so. A few couldn't be moved because it was too close to DD day.

So my question is this:

Will i have fulfilled the 2 "active" DD requirements simply by having the two of them on file in the old account even though nothing's been taken from them?

Has anyone been in a similar position? Thanks.
Anon32
4 Mar 17 #146
It has to be less than £30 also you can only make 3 transactions in a day i think! Otherwise if someone found your card! They can still buy £90 of booze without using a pin! They could make it unlimited but you'd be the first to complain saying 'can't belive the bank allow unlimited purchases at £30, that's ridiculous' its always te banks fault never the customer! So therefore after three uses it asks for the pin until the next day! By then you should have canceled your card!

If you get the ID letter, make sure the branch calls the number on the letter... otherwise lots of people complaining that the ID check never went through. The number is for TSB fraud prevention and they're different to account opening.

I made an online application on Friday and submitted ID yesterday at a branch - which I am told will be physically submitted by that branch to TSB HQ by post on Monday evening. Slightly concerned this may mean the account isn't considered as 'opened' by close of business on Monday 27 February - anyone in the same position?

Get yourself invested in AIM shares. One to look for is BMN.

I should add, AIM investments are very risky and money could go down. I'm currently roughly only 20% up over 4 years. That's around 1k per year. Go back a year and I was down 7k... That's AIM. Takes some balls that's for sure

BMN are close to getting a working mine from EVRAZ. If that goes through, the current share price will be a distant memory.

I switched using an old dead account I had with Barclays added an old paypal direct debit and a credit card direct debit to meet the terms for the switch.
I applied on the 9/2/17 and used their switching service,it completed on the 17/02/17.
Money and direct debits all moved. I even rang paypal and credit card to check direct debits had moved they had.Ive made a small purchase on each to make sure they are classed as active.Added £1500.00 for the good interest rate and will add £500.00 a month and spend £100.00 contactless payment to get an extra £5.00.So far all went fine no issues what so ever.

Why does the OP suggest doing this deal via Money Supermarkets website?
whw
15 Feb 17 #130
I'm working to the rule that if cashback per month covers the fee and therefore doesn't reduce the interest I earn, then keep it. Otherwise look to split it into other current accounts (Lloyds, TSB, Tesco etc), any left over goes into regular savers.

Tbh splitting it up may earn you more interest albeit with more fiddling of Direct Debits and depositing money per month into each account.

Depends if you are just happy with roughly £25 per month for your £18k with little work.

I have 2 accounts already and used the contactless cards for both accounts, its easy to max to £100 on each card if you use them to pay for petrol amongst other things, was getting £10 a month from them until my cashback period finished in December. It's money for nothing. I'm not sure, but I think they now only allow 1 Classic Plus Account per customer.

That's why I use first direct as my main account, I got a £500 overdraft included and the first £250 is interest free.
The AA took out £8000 for an ISA without warning. Causing me to be overdrawn by £7500. I was called @ 9.00am by First direct and informed of this issue. After moving the isa money from savings into my current account and going back into credit I asked how much I would be fined. I was told that as I was overdrawn and back in credit the same day before 23.00 pm there would be no charge.
That's why I would never leave them.

i have never received a switching bonus on my classic plus account. is there a way to take advantage of this offer now?
maybe close my account. will that work?
captainkev
9 Feb 17 1 #95
I looked at this, tempted by the £125, but then I looked at the fees they charge.

e.g. 1) no overdraft and they decline a payment due to insufficient funds? £10 every time it happens
2) Got an overdraft, and want to use it? £6 a month, plus interest.
3) "A payment from your account takes you into an Unplanned Overdraft and you make another payment from the account while you are overdrawn." £21 plus interest (even if you're only £26 overdrawn)

Wouldn't be long before they recoup their £125 from me if I moved to them!

I used moneysupermarket to apply for the TSB current account, once it was completed i had to go in to a meeting. Came back out and the session had timed out meaning i couldn't begin the switching application. Through MoneySupermarket there was no way to access the switching page unless you went through the TSB pages. Ive applied for the switch now but hopefully the £125 is not affected by the lack of cookies for when i begun my application for switching.

Main point: Don't half do it, complete your current account opening and then begin the switch process to avoid any issues.

I think you have to use their Switching Service to qualify for the £125 bonus which means they transfer your account over and any direct debits/standing orders on your behalf. You don't do the direct debits yourself. Did you also apply via the Money Supermaket website? As it says above in the deal, that is also one of the requisites to receive the bonus.
paulmcmanus83
9 Feb 17 #90
Can someone please advise me - I've just applied for and opened this Current Account, to get the £125 switching bonus do I move (2/3) of my Direct Debits and I setup a standing order to pay £500/month from my existing bank account?
Jules_HT
9 Feb 17 #89
I've switched various accounts 4 times in the last 6 months and not had any fluctuation of my credit rating whatsoever.

NatWest is good for me for one account (the one I put all my household bills through) because for £3 a month I get about £15 cashback on all my household bills.

Sounds like you need to set up a couple of temporary easy to apply online bank accounts which don't offer switching bonuses. Set up 4 DDs on each and fund them from your main account. Then switch both the new accounts to reward paying providers (eg. 1 to TSB which you use for spending (contactless as much as you can) and holding £1500 of your savings, and 1 to HSBC for the high switching bonus). Then set yourself up a pair of Tesco accounts for 3% on £3K each. That'll give you 3% on £7.5K, cashback on all your bills, cashback on contactless transactions, and £300 of switching bonuses. Stick the rest of your savings in a Santander 123 account and get 1.5% on your remaining savings. If you need to set up a few standing orders to circulate your money round the accounts to make sure you hit the minimum pay-in on each of them, then do it.

There is real free money to be made doing this. Don't be loyal to your bank, they aren't loyal to you!

TSB is a very good bank. I've been with them for well over a year and have had no issues. I recently retired and a lump sum was paid into my TSB account. I wanted to pay off my mortgage with another bank but fell foul of the maximum daily limit on online payments. I rang them and was told I needed to go to a branch and do a CHAPS payment which would cost me £30 (if I remember correctly). I protested saying that my nearest branch was a train ride away. They offered to cover the cost of the CHAPS transfer and the cost of the rail ticket and promptly credited my account with the funds! How about that for excellent customer service! Had a nice day out shopping

I was about to complain that I never got a bonus when I signed up to TSB, but then I remember that as a bank they're one of the best.

I've had 2 balance transfers with them, 1 I paid off in full at the end and then another was offered to me, which I've just taken. I have a low rate loan with them (nobody else would have offered me the same). Every other bank I deal with just seems to want you to overpay everything. I'd recommend them over first direct too

I've had 2 of these accounts for a while now. Used to get 5% on £2k as previously said, but this is now 3% on £1.5k, however it's still a very good rate in my opinion and TSB are often overlooked

I don't need any DD on my accounts to earn the interest, but I guess this is necessary to qualify for the switching bonus. As for funding the account - I send £500 from one account to the another and back again, so there are no issues with internal transfers to meet the £500 monthly funding and qualify for the interest payments

Good deal

I understand these complaints about contactless occasionally not being an option for security reasons, but 99% of the time that sort of problem can be avoided by simply doing a token purchase occasionally using PIN, or immediately before the larger transaction you REALLY want to be contactless to get the TSB cashback.

when they say 'switch' do they close down the old account.
E.g. my bank is lloyds, if I apply for this will the Lloyds account get closed down automatically once this one opens up.
Would prefer if I could just leave it open.

Also, in regards to 2 direct debits needed to switch. What if I have no direct debits to switch.. Its not possible to set up direct debits ourselves as customers unless they are real, as customers we can only set up standing orders I think?
mjb1975
9 Feb 17 #67
Actually, now people mention it, yes, I was prompted to enter my PIN when doing contactless transactions, thus negating the cashback. It certainly wasn't often but it was noticeable enough to be annoying. Never happens with my Amex card, for example.

If however your about to apply for a mortgage in next 6 months its better to hold off as every credit check counts.

Only being with your bank for a short period on future checks has no great effect that I've noticed.

They offer a credit card too which gives 1% cash back on the first £500 spent every month, so another fiver saved every month if you spend the full amount! it's pretty good!

I just switched to their reward account, no minimum pay in and no direct debits, £100, changing to £75 come March. Dont confuse with the reward plus account which has a £15 a month charge !

I found the 5% cashback a bit of a con - sometimes as often as 1/3 times I tried to use contactless (eg shopping in Co-op, Tesco and M&S) it would ask me to enter my card and pop in the pin (possibly disqualifying that transaction from cashback as it was no longer 'contactless') - anyone else have this problem?

I've had to enter a PIN perhaps 3 times in 4 months.

Depends what account you have, whether you've had a switching bonus previously or whether you want to close/downgrade your account and apply for another qualifying one.

You'll have had 4% Interest on your Club Lloyd's current account and Club Lloyd's Monthly saver for almost 3 years. Not too bad!

I don't care this is a dead account I will be using I'm with first direct for my main account and would not leave them for a £1000.00. Best service I've ever had.
shatteredneon
8 Feb 17 1 #20
Hot for the cash back but this is a rubbish current account. I did a switch about a year ago, payments take ages to clear and spending takes days to show up on account, which makes budgeting a nightmare. By comparison to my Nationwide account which always responds much quicker. Will be switching again soon
knack to shatteredneon
8 Feb 17 1 #22
I disagree this is a rubbish account. Until recently I was getting 5% on £2000 and £5 per month on contactless spends. It's not quite as good now but certainly not rubbish and not worth getting rid of IMO.

I've personally not had a problem with payments being slow. If the spending is using contactless card there will always be a delay in updating available balance if the transaction isn't authorised online. The rare times I've used chip and pin, it hasn't been slower than any other bank.

Just setup a second DD on my spare account so I can take up this offer.
Hoping that yorkshire bank will bring back the £200.00 switching offer again at a later date.

hsbc, Co - op and first direct have good switching deals but all have higher monthly input commitment or monthly costs,. Therefore Tsb looked the best for me. worth a look though, might be better for you.
ikabod32
8 Feb 17 #18
crazy .. I was just in the process of applying for this account after seeing it on Martin lewis website. Then I saw your post. It looks ideal because of the low £500 monthly input . Your post highlights that it's an okay deal . Heat from me. Thanks for posting.

Switching banks won't affect your credit rating, but most lenders will ask for the amount of time with your current bank (logically, more time with bank = more stable finances) and may use that in their decision making process.

The government will announce new proposals for switching to entice people to do so its expected this will mean more banks will be giving out these switching bonuses although most have already had them in one form or another.

does switching banks affect credit ratings? I'm looking to switch, never have but Natwest sucks at the moment, I've got like £15k sitting in the bank, doing nothing...
mjb1975
8 Feb 17 4 #6
I've just switched away from TSB having had it since last year (gone with HSBC Advance, £200 cashback in total). The 5% contactless purchases works out at a max of a fiver a month, and that expires in September, so eight month's worth = £40.

Btw, perfectly fine, just tarting my current account around for various switching bonuses. Nice, clean app for banking too. Only switched away as my contactless thing has expired and they've reduced the interest rate. No complaints about them while I've been with them.
goldy12 to mjb1975
8 Feb 17 #8
Same here, took advantage of this deal last year and now looking to switch away as the offer I had have finished . Contactless gone, 5% regular saver gone and the 5% on £2000 balance is now 3% on £1500. Nothing against TSB just got to chase the rates was considering the Coop Bank myself
