New deal giving the longest fee free balance transfer within the market - 0% for 28% months and no balance transfer fee. I will be making use of this and shifting a credit card balance.

Previous best deal was Halifax 0% for up to 26 months with no fee. Sainsbury's deal is better in my opinion, not only because of the additional 2 months difference but is not up to e.g. if they accept you they will give you the full 0% for 28 months.

Need to go via the link below as is a different offer if you just go direct to their site https://www.sainsburysbank.co.uk/credit_cards/micro/cca_nobtfee28s_micro

For anyone wondering about combing the 0% purchases and balance transfer offers like I was in my earlier posts afraid I can't offer any extra info after all.

The script they read out prior to my BT didn't really make it any clearer either but as I'm no longer doing that I didn't ask for more details.

I was given a lower limit than my existing 0% BT card so I just made 4 small Sainsbury's purchases to qualify for the 5000 nectar points, paid these off my account to avoid any complication, then used the maximum amount for the BT (they quoted 95% of credit limit, but also minimum £100 buffer).

Also check they have your nectar card number. Can't remember if there was an option to provide it when applying, if there was I would have entered it, but there wasn't one on my account.

Took a while but my balance transfer fee has just been refunded, must have been tied to billing. Just under the 60 days quoted, was just about to phone up.

Thanks. I'm still waiting for my card through but will probably phone them to see if they give me a clearer answer when I do, so I at least have something on file if I do decided to do it and have any problems.

I tried to ask Sainsburys Bank a similar question and didn't get a straight/reassuring answer, so decided not to bother as had the potential to be more cost and hassle than it was worth. That said, the example given makes sense to me and is essentially the question I was asking them on the phone.

Hi, what you've outlined there makes sense, as the payment hierarchy will pay off the most expensive debt first e.g. purchases. General advice is not to spend on this card but if you did pay back the purchase spend before the expiry of the 3 month 0% purchase promo period, this should avoid any interest charges.

@morgie second opinion on the question above - ta

Did anyone who got the card use it for purchases for the 5000 nectar points? Did this work OK or cause any problems with interest in the balance transfer?

Can anyone explain how the 0% on purchases for 3 months offer on this combines with the 0% on balance transfers for 28 months?

Say I transfer a £1000 balance and spend £100 in the first 3 months. As long as I pay off the £100 spending within the first 3 months does the £1000 still remain at 0% interest for the full 28 months?

I ask as it says 5000 bonus nectar points (worth £25) if you use it in Sainsbury's 4 times. But don't want to do that if it will affect the balance transfer offer.

19 Apr 17 #243
Thanks for the reply. Thinking of applying for this to transfer an existing 0% card balance where the 0% offer is due to end when I need to remortgage. If I do will also transfer this month's balance from my cashback card used for spending which i pay in full, to build up a bit more in savings.

I know a Barclaycard Platinum no fee balance transfer card I have allowed multiple transfers during the fee free offer period so was wondering if this was the norm.

The online application lets you enter the details of more than one card. I can't remember the limit, but at least two. I'm not familiar with whether or not this is common practice, sorry.

I was going to ask if this card allows a fee free transfer from more than one credit card? Your quoted post suggests it does unless that s is a typo.

If so is that fairly standard for balance transfer cards or does it depend on the card provider?

I did not know any of this. Will dig out my paperwork & screen shot once the transfer balance has gone through
Chanchi32
11 Apr 17 1 #239
I would go down the complaints route

Use the words extreme dissatisfaction that you have been given the wrong product and because of Sainsbury's you are at a financial detriment. Keep the complaint open and once someone reviews it am sure they will offer you the fee refund and would also hold out for £20-£50 payment for inconvenience.

Go direct to the CEO office [email protected]

For information it costs the banks a fortune in cases where complaints get referred to the financial ombudsman if you cant come to an agreement with Sainsbobs.

Took ages for this card to arrive - they lost 2 of my signed /returned confirmation slips!

Anyway, now it's arrived & I transferred a balance across only to be told there is a 1.5% transfer fee (£27), of which 0.9% (£11) is refunded, not the full 1.5%.

Apparently I have been sent the 33 month card NOT the 28 month which I applied for.

I kept the screen shot on the application page, but advisor said they'd have to cancel my card & reissue with 28 month card which is too much hassle as I need it ASAP.

Any chance I could get the rest of the £16 fee back - any advise on how?

Thanks

I was approved of this when you first posted the deal; they insist on sending a paper agreement which took a week to arrive. Then the pin arrived a week later and the card arrived yesterday. Great deal but they could pick up the pace!

I honestly don't think its too much to ask them to have the full offer in writing when I sign the paperwork.

I explained that if I sign the paperwork then I agree to all terms and conditions of the balance transfer as stated on the paperwork - which I didn't - as nowhere does it say "no fee for the balance transfer"

Notes on my account would not be worth anything - I would have signed paperwork that was different to what was offered to myself originally.

Balance transfer completed ~5 days ago following automated fraud prevention call from them, PIN arrived yesterday and card today. Registered for online banking (here) and can of course see the transferred balance and fee. Set a reminder to check back in a couple of months that it's been refunded. I'm not as concerned as some on here about that being an issue, already spoke to them once on the phone, had a note added to my account and have screenshots etc. Whilst it's not 100% reassuring as a brand I trust I believe they'll do the right thing, even if it means be following up.

Edit - one thing I did notice in the online banking is it didn't look like my Direct Debit for the minimum payment had been setup. Nothing showing on my bank either. I called to ask Sainsburys if it was underway, but they said nothing on their system (sure I specified it when I applied). To be sure, I've set it up online today.

Great deal Chanchi - thank you.

I had to call them for the third time this morning to tell them again I don't want to go through with it.

I receieved yet another contract to sign in the post this morning despite already telling them twice I didn't want it.

They again asked me why and the lady just could not understand why the fact that the contract they have asked me to sign does NOT state anywhere its a fee free transfer - is enough for not to want it.

I don't want to "take their word for it" as she said - I want it in writing before I agree to anything.

I think I have had a lucky escape.

OK, so I re-applied and it then said they would get back to me within 5 working days with a decision. The other application which I cancelled would've caused an alert on this new application. Anyway it's been about 7 work days now and I've heard nothing from them. So even if they do come back with an approved application I'll just give them a miss. If this is their customer service when you're opening an account, imagine how bad it'll be with you have a problem that needs resolving on an active account.

I wasn't suggesting it was a good idea, simply acknowledging in my pedantic fashion that if you do it's your stated income rather than your actual that helps to determine your credit limit.
jimthehorsegod
9 Mar 17 #216
You've put stated in parenthesis there - I really must advise against the implied idea of overstating your income. Applications are compared, and if you lie enough that it's obvious, you'll get yourself on CIFAS and off any chance of obtaining credit for years
faddy54
8 Mar 17 #215
I'l admit that I might have worded my question in a more supplicatory fashion, but I don't see that it's a "rude" question to ask in a forum where we're all hiding behind anonymous user names. Factors that may affect credit limits are credit rating, size of requested transfer, and (stated) income. People seem happy enough to anonymously discuss the first two, so why so shy about the third?
Straycat1967
8 Mar 17 2 #214

7 Mar 17 #209
Hi - I have decided against doing the transfer.

My paperwork did have the right 28 months on - but it did NOT state the initial balance transfer fee would be refunded at month 2.

I rang them twice and they agreed it did NOT say it was fee free to do a transfer but that they had "logged" my phone call and if the fees were not returned then to call them.

Well no - I wont bother - ALL terms and conditions should be stated clearly and up front - even with screenshots I can imagine many hours on the phone trying to sort it out if it doesn't happen.

So a huge thank you to the OP - but I wont deal with a company who want me to "trust them" that they will do something - IO would rather have it in the agreement I sign.

Its a shame as this will probably affect my credit score now I have applied and not gone through with it.......

No. This offer is for 28 months interest free on balance transfer with no fee (1.5% but refunded in first 60 days). It also features 3 months interest free on purchases.

You've applied for the 'Dual offer' credit card (on the right here). You'll have a 3% fee on any balance transfer, rather than a 1.5% fee that gets refunded (e.g. no fee).

You'll have to make the minimum payment each month to avoid interest during the 28 month period, and of course be able to pay off in full by the end of the 28 months to avoid interest charges then. I believe someone mentioned the minimum monthly payment is 3% of the balance total each month.

I doubt whether you can balance transfer to a Revolut card, but you can top up Revolut from a credit card for a 1% fee (to Revolut). Mine came in post today - but can't see a credit limit on the documents.

It just says "we will set the credit limit"

Also no mention of the initial charge for balance transfer being refunded - but did mention it on site when applied ?

Will call them.

UPDATE - I missed a page that was printed on the reverse of one of the "small print" pages - this has a credit limit of £12000 printed on it - so one question answered - I am only transferring a balance of £4000 and the card will never be used for anything else.

BUT the lady on the telephone confirms that the "refund" of the balance transfer fee is NOT mentioned on the paperwork anywhere - but she assures me it will happen..............famous last words !!

This last point seems very strange - surely it state implicitly that any balance transfer fee will be refunded ??

that was the link that i put in the deal link - but always a chance that hukd tracking could redirect to the wrong page

when you signed up for the credit agreement the terms and conditions explicitly reference the 28 month offer. i suspect you went to another offer on the sainsburys site (easily done) - maybe call customer service to explain the situation and see what they can do.

That was the link in the body of the text not actually the link that appeared when you clicked 'get deal' or was it? Can you confirm the link that it took you to via 'get deal' so I can work out whether I applied for the 42 month by accident. 99% sure I didn't though...

Did anyone else notice a different offer showing in their credit agreement? Most people probably didn't read them thoroughly.

3 Mar 17 2 #164
If it's useful for anyone to know, they let you balance transfer up to 95% of your credit limit. It's to allow some head room for the initial 1.5% fee, that as the OP states will then be refunded within 60 days. I called them up last night to adjust my balance transfers as they were higher than the credit limit I'd been offered. Fairly straightforward process and helpful staff.

Yep so you pay £60 upfront as the 1.99% fee and then you receive £3000 into your current account and pay of £200 of that until it's gone.

Then you're account would be on £0 so you can borrow more at 0% until the offer period ends.
Or initially borrow more so that you pay £200 per month for the full 32 months.
ivandias
2 Mar 17 #155
Minimum payment is £200 a month for 16 months

Correct. But if you're struggling on it (I'm not 100% clear myself) I'd advise not to get that card. Banks make money off credit cards, specifically off the people who can't follow all the rules.

This can be a sizeable difference. £50 vs £150 per month on a 5k balance.

Whilst its paying the debt off, I can see how someone might rush into switching without noticing that detail so it is worth mentioning

MBNA & Barclay's were doing 0.64% fee on 32 months interest free with £20 direct cash back from them if you balance transfer more than £1,000. If you plan to transfer between £1,000 & £3,125 these would be a better deal as at £3,125 you'd pay £20 fee which would be offset by the cash back so effectively free and get 4 months longer interest free period. less than £3,125 and you're in profit. must be more than £1,000 to get the £20 cash back. strongly recommend MSE credit club, it will tell you which cards you are most likely to be approved for before you apply.

Some things are just never good enough for some people. They want 0% on transfers, 0% transfer fees, 0% interest at a 0.5% minimum payment...

People forget that banks are businesses.
morgie
1 Mar 17 #141
What were you hoping for? I know some cards can be closer to 1%, but still for the benefit of shifting a large balance to this for 28 months without interest I don't think 3% is at all bad. Where are you moving your balance(s) from?
asc91
1 Mar 17 #140
Any idea when they'll pull this deal/card?
asc91
1 Mar 17 1 #139
I get that, but I just wondered if those first 3 months of purchases were considered seperately to purchases after those 3 months.

But yep it makes sense that it follows what you said.

Thanks!
morgie
1 Mar 17 #138
Interest will kick in after the first three months.....otherwise it would be a longer than 3 month 0% period on purchases.
helendupree
1 Mar 17 #137
We signed up for this but the minimum payment is either 3% of balance or equalled over the 28months so it isn't that much of a good deal. Sorry
asc91
1 Mar 17 #136
The 0% interest on purchases in the first 3 months.

If, in the first 3 months I spend £1000 and after that spend £0. Will that £1000 (from the first 3 months) begin growing - ie. does the interest kick in, or is the spending in the first 3 months ring-fenced and protected?
morgie
1 Mar 17 #135
Yes, and each month (of the first 30) your minimum payment would be ~1% of the outstanding balance on the Halifax card. A credit limit is just that, a limit, not a target, so don't feel you need to max the card out.

Get your £10k working for you. Assuming you don't have a mortgage that's worth over paying on (without penalty fees) to keep interest there down and pay off quicker, then look into the best savings account for you - http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/savings-accounts-best-interest
ether707
1 Mar 17 #134
It did sound to good to be true lol. I guess if I get a credit limit of £1000 and spend only £200. I would only need to pay back the £200 over the £30 months? 0% interest free.

I think I'm going to have to look into savings accounts too. As I have 10k in savings one account doing nothing.
morgie
1 Mar 17 1 #133
You MUST make the minimum payment every month of the promotional period to avoid any interest charges. You can of course pay more than the minimum payment. You also need to be able to pay the FULL balance off at the end of the promotional period to avoid interest.

If you're applying for a card like the Halifax one offering a long interest free period on purchases, consider at the same time opening a new savings account to start to save cash back to pay it off when the period (30 months in the case of the Halifax) is up. That way you're preparing yourself for when you'll need to pay it back and benefiting by earning interest, rather than paying it! E.g. if/when Tesco Bank re-open applications for their 3% interest account (max balance £3k) - http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/tesco-current-account-pays-3-aer-savings-balances-up-3-000-guaranteed-from-april-2613103
ether707
1 Mar 17 #132
So If I get that card. I have 30 months 0% interest. Meaning I can pay it back within 30 months interest free. And if some months I don't make the payment I won't have added interest unless I go over the 30 months period? :man:
morgie
1 Mar 17 1 #131
You want to do it the other way around really if you currently have no credit card with debt. 3 months is not a 'hot deal' for an interest free period on purchases. E.g.

1.) Take out an interest free PURCHASE card with a long interest free period. The Halifax card is a good current deal here, 0% interest on purchases for 30 months. http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/halifax-0-purchase-credit-card-for-30-months-2-half-years-2618311

Over the 30 months spend on that card, as long as you can make the minimum payment each month you'll pay no interest. Obviously have some plan as to what you're going to do when the 30 months is up(!)

2.) As you head toward the end of that 30 month period, keep an eye out for a balance transfer card with no fee to transfer your balance and a long interest free period. E.g. like this very post for the Sainsburys card. Effectively no fee to transfer your balance (it's 1.5% but refunded in 60 days) and then interest free, again as long as you make the minumum payments each month, for 28 months.

Hope that makes sense? But there's no guarantee an option like this card will be around in the future. I guess I have to stress, with any credit card have a plan as to how you're going to cope when any promotional period ends. Ideally you have the savings to pay the maximum card limit off in full from day 1, but rather than do that you're using your savings to earn some interest in a current account or ISA etc, while you enjoy the benefit of interest free spending.
Gbex
1 Mar 17 #130
"Thank you for your recent application for a Sainsbury's Bank Credit Card. We're pleased to offer you a credit card with an estimated credit limit of £12000"

So basically an interest free loan for 28 months, thanks for the heads up :-)
ether707
1 Mar 17 #129
So If I signed up for this credit card with Sainsburys, bought some things and then towards the end of 3 months, transfered my balance to another credit card deal like the Halifax one. I would get 0% interest for 24 months for example or whatever they are offering. And then I would have 24 months to pay that back. Is that how it works.
morgie
1 Mar 17 #128
That 0% for 29 months is for purchases, not balance transfers.

For balance transfers the card you link offers an interest free period of 18 months, but with a transfer fee of 3%. The deal this thread is posted for is interest free on purchases for 28 months with no transfer free (1.5% but refunded in 60 days, so effectively free).
morgie
1 Mar 17 #127
No. This card's main benefit is the balance transfer aspect - interest free for 28 months on the balance you transfer from an existing card. The example you give is relevant for an interest free purchase card, where you can purchase up to the limit they set you and only pay the minimum card payment each month for X months without incurring interest. This card only offers 3 months interest free on purchases (not a great deal).

For a card with a long interest free period on purchases see a previous reply here, comment #76.

I disagree. If you're transferring a large amount, 2.3% can be a lot. Better to take the free transfer for the shorter period and re-transfer later on.
asc91
1 Mar 17 #114
It doesn't mean more debt. For example, you have a credit card with a £5000 limit at 0% for 3 years. For 3yrs, up to £5000 you put things on the card.

This means by the time you've maxed it out, your current account is £5000 better off. Along the way you have invested these current account savings (i.e. low cost index tracker can quite comfortably make 5%).

If you keep moving that £5000 debt over 0% transfer cards, you make £250 a year through the interest.

ALSO

If you might have made a big purchase on a credit card, so that you have better buyer protection. You can then pay this off slowly, a 0% transfer extends the time. If I buy a sofa for £2400, that's £100 per month for 2 years. If I can transfer that balance to add another 2 years on at 0%, then it's £50 a month. A lot more manageable.
asc91
1 Mar 17 #113
Agreed. Take the free transfer and after 28 months make sure you're able to pay it off OR hope that there's an alternative you can switch onto - never ending switch!
morgie
1 Mar 17 #112
"2.30% balance transfer fee applies to transfers made within your first 3 months, 3% afterwards (min. £3 at all times)."

I'm a much bigger fan of a 1.5% balance transfer fee that will be refunded in 60 days (so effectively free) and then interest free for 28 months rather than a 2.3% fee and interest free for 42 months, but it will be down to individuals to do the maths and work out what's best for their circumstances.
nihir
1 Mar 17 #111
It's no fee for first 3 months and 3% afterwords so you can't say no fee at all.
This one is 0% and much better than the OP has put.

We just got the LLoyds platinum with 32 months interest free as long as you pay the minimun, they gave us £9500 so were transfering all our ones onto that card as we buy and sell tents on clearance so we spend a fair bit. It then lets you transfer for a further 90 days and if we use our asda card we get 0.5% cashback first then transfer it, there is a £20 cashback on first transfer from Lloyds and then a further 12 months interest free spend on the card - can't go wrong!!!

We buy our tents then have 2 yers to sell then then invest the money in a tesco 3% account..........

some very polarised views of this! The way I see it, if it means repaying a debt much faster without the often obscene interest charges seen with credit cards then it's great, giving folks a route to being debt free quicker.

Well done if you don't need it, but sneering at people proactively looking to pay back their dues faster is a bit odd.

The 42 months product has a 2.3% fee - so on a £10k balance transfer you would pay a one off cost of £230.

The 28 month offer has no fee. The trade off that you need to consider is if you are willing to pay a fee for the extra months 0% for the 42 month deal, personally 28 months is fine for me and not willing to pay a fee.

morgie to Jamiekruga
28 Feb 17 1 #35
The advantage of this is it charges 0% interest on balance transfers for a fair period (28 months). This means it's good if you have existing debt on another credit card (that you're no doubt paying some interest on) as you can transfer it and suddenly be paying no interest for 28 months. You will have to make the minimum card payment each month to avoid any interest. Cards like this normally charge you a small-ish percent of the balance you wish to transfer as a fee. This card is also good here, as although they charge 1.5% upfront of the balance you wish to transfer they will refund it within 60 days - so effectively free.

Alternatively you might be coming to the end of promotional period for an interest free purchase card. If you shift the balance to this card you're essentially getting another 28 months interest free where you can just make the minimum payment each month.

Whilst this type of card might be a real life line for those facing high interest rates (or any interest to be honest) on their current cards, others may use it to shift debt for longer whilst earning interest in a savings account on the funds they already have in place to pay the card off in 28 months time.

Nice one. They offered me £9000 limit. My mbna 0% deal doesn't expire until April, but I may as well get this now rather than risk getting rejected in two months as I'm about to move house. Thanks very much <3

the deal is for balance transfers with no fee

If you want a card for 0% purchases you would be better off going with the halifax deal

Confused

Card that the Link takes you to says:

Representative 18.9% APR (variable)
0% p.a. for 18 months on balance transfers, fee applies
0% p.a. for 29 months on all purchases

A £9,000 offer would appear to be a good sign, in my experience its difficult to get over £7,000 if they are just looking for a tag line rate to attract customers

This is a good deal... I've just set my Mum up with a 26 month Halifax card, free transfer but also £21 TCB. That hasn't tracked yet mind, but I'm hopeful :smirk:

I'd personally rather have the extra 2 months than £21 anyway, heated OP!
