Has anyone tried to connect these to an existing BT Homeplug 500 network? I can't seem to get them to chat. Any help would be appreciated
Mortal Wombat to AshMcConnell
16 Jan 17 #72
I linked them with an existing 500 plug and a 200 wireless extender. There are two ways to do it if they don't work out of the box.

You can attach directly to each of them with a network cable and assign them the same network name using the software which you can download from Zyxel or you can hold the connection button on each for 2-3 seconds and they will form a network together.

If you choose the button approach then you need to press the buttons on ALL of your plugs within a window of a couple of minutes so best to have them close by.

The quick start guide should tell you how the Zyxel can be joined to a network ones and most homeplugs are similar.

Chuckle post of the day .

The 1 gig is because you are using gigabit ethernet to connect to them. However the link won't give you 1 gig speed. It will be better though.

Yes I know, I'm talking about theoretical limits. What I'm saying is on a 200/500 device you won't get over 100 even in ideal conditions. 1000 device you could achieve 1000 in theory.

Hi

I have a pair of these already and live in a 3 story house with the router in the study and all my kit in a cinema room with PC,SkyQ, PS4 and i get 1GBit up there to my PC. but this will depend on your house wiring.
I have a par of 500MBPS TP links from the study to the garage and only achieve 100MBPS I have tried the 1GBit adaptor and still only get 100MBPS so their is an issue with the wiring possibly because it on a second ring main
Publix to GrassSnakeUK
12 Jan 17 #60
I have the Cheapest package Virgin Router 80Mbps incoming upstairs spare room.
V Router > Cat6 cable > upstairs room adapter into Ring Main
Downstairs Ring main > Adapter > Cat6 cable > This laptop.

http://labs.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/

What I do/did:
My Adapters are TP-Link AV1200 Gigabit Pass-through.
You need to use quality Ethernet cables both ends
New Cat6 cables (recent HUKD Maplin offer) greatly improved adapter performance.

Improvement may have been previous poor cat 5 cables or cat6 technology. Can’t tell.

If you think the connection speeds are not as expected you might
swap with spare Ethernet cables if you can, to expose dodgy cables.
Of course it is difficul to apportion poor performance between, the Ethernet cables, the House wiring and the adapters. That is if your house wiring is poor, the best cables and adapters in the world won’t compensate for that.

I Power off downstairs remote adapter end overnight.
Power off/on the remote adapter and the adapter connected to the router if speed deteriorates.
Reboot V router if adapters power on/off doesn't restore speed.
Adapters automatically reconnect to router and each other after power off without manual intervention.

I just ran this test on this remote downstairs laptop used to post this.

You will suffer some signal degradation thus will not get 1000Mb/s even to a device plugged in to another powerline. I have had 200Mbs and 1200Mbs and get around 40% speeds when transferring from my NAS (on a good day)

numpty question:
I have incoming wired speeds of around 150mb/s. if I connected one of these to my router and then connected my sons xbox to the other in his upstairs bedroom, what sort of speed would I get at his xbox? He is currently getting around 12mb/s via wi fi.
Thanks.
Joshimitsu91 to GrassSnakeUK
12 Jan 17 1 #25
Providing your wiring is good you could receive anywhere up to the full amount. Again providing it's good you should also get better and more stable ping than via WiFi, so any online gaming would work better.
Johnny_5 to GrassSnakeUK

12 Jan 17 #54
Site says can be ordered and stock on the way !
Also as the discussion points above bring out, english language use on site is poor.
Clearly you get a "pair" of two units with two cables, rather than two sets of two units and cables !
Still, reasonable value for speed.
GrassSnakeUK
12 Jan 17 #45
Thanks, so if I'm getting 150mbs at source I can potentially get 150mbs in 1st floor bedroom using these items. Why would I not purchase a lesser device such as a 500mb type? they are wired across 2 separate ring mains however.
Joshimitsu91 to GrassSnakeUK
12 Jan 17 #53

As far as I know the 500mbps and below units are talking about the total throughput of the system and the maximum per connection is limited to 100mbps by the 10/100 ethernet ports. These 1000mbps units have gigabit 10/100/1000 ports and so the maximum per connection in theory is 1000mbps. So if you have 150mbps you aren't going to achieve that on a 500 kit.

or is my understanding of the terminology wrong?
Lahn to GrassSnakeUK
12 Jan 17 #47
Your understanding is in theory correct, but the powerline rated speeds are always seriously overrated, even though it depends on your wires too, higher rated ones usually get better speeds.

This deal is a fantastic price, you should not consider getting 500mbit ones if you actually hope to achieve a 150 signal, that's my experience anyway

Question: if I want a wireless output where the 2nd Zyxel unit placed, and one that outputs 1,000mbps wirelessly, what is the best way of doing that. I do have a spare 1,400 mbps Asus wireless router that I could use for that purpose. Thank you.
jacksonliam to Helpful
12 Jan 17 #42
Each device contains a switch, so you connect one cable from the router to one of the plugs and 3 devices (or switches) to the other 3 ports on the plugs.

Ethernet hubs don't really exist any more, switches are much better.

Yes that should work, Leave the modem port empty (plug the powerline adapter into one of the device ports on the second router not into the modem port).

You will also need to disable the DHCP server on the second router and make sure the second router is configured to use the a different IP address for management (E.g 192.168.1.1 for the main and 192.168.1.222 for the second).

That will essentially use the access point and switch inside of the second router, ignoring the modem/router part.

I hope the detail below helps:
Unit 1 connections
Router to Unit
Plug into electricity socket
2nd port remains spare and can be used to connect to any equipment that may have an ethernet port - so yes, the 2nd port makes it a mini bub

Unit 2 connections

Plug into electricity socket (where you want to use the higher strength signal)
Each of the 2 ethernet ports can be used to connect to 2 different pieces of equipment

Thanks for the reply Helpful. I realise I connect an ethernet cable from the router but then what is the other port for? If I want to use both ports at the remote location do I have to plug two cables into the router? Just not sure if these are working as a 'splitter' cable or a mini hub.

An ethernet cable needs to connect one of the 2 units to the router. That way the broadband signal is delivered to the Zyxel unit.

Heat, ordered two pairs. Worth being aware, however, that these can be a tight fit when used on plug sockets down near the skirting board - the body of the addapter protrudes downwards from the 3-pin plug and the ethernet ports are on the bottom. You'll tend to need a minimum of 5-6 inches of clearance below the wall socket for these to sit comfortably. There are other models where the 3-pin is at the bottom of the unit and the ethernet ports on top if that's a concern, like these:

Would these be compatible with existsing tp-link adapters?

Also if my tp-link are 200mb/s will these still operate at 1000mb/s?
maddogb to dawsonz
12 Jan 17 #14
if you set these to the same network as your existing tplink they will operate at 200mbs, you can run two networks 1x200 plus 1x1000 and they are supposed to work but i didn't have much success with a 200 and a 500 dual setup but it was my mates and his wiring was dodgy
gyzmoid to dawsonz
12 Jan 17 #16
I've heard of users having compatibility issues with the Zyxel and other brands, but they didnt confirm the model so I wouldn't be able to say for sure either way.
if you're existing adapters are running at 200mbs then IF the Zyxels are compatible, they'll only be able communicate with your current ones at 200mbs, providing they are atleast powerline AV, which at that speed they should be.
If it were me, i wouldnt risk it if you need to continue using the other adapters, but if you're considering replacing the setup with these faster ones, then i'd go for it.
Also worth baring in mind that theres now AV2 Mimo adapters, that use the ground wire to increase stability, but i'm using 1gb tplink av2 adapters with no isssue.

Good choice, these use the Broadcom's BCM60333 chipset.

Unlike most other Powerline products on sale that use Qualcomm chips. The Qualcomm have a nasty habit of dropping connection occasionally for no reason in some settings. If you experience broadband dropouts, these Broadcom equipped ones will a very nice replacement.
