On offer again via aliexpress and Fantacy for 4 days, to avoid warranty charge I just selected ship to usa then made sure it has the UK address on the order before payment.
Old news, any evidence from the last 12 months?
No, I couldn't find any either. Happily using my xiaomi mi max, wife is happily using a redmi note 3 without a tin hat too.

Special Edition or International Version. Other places do sell it and state Band 20 (800MHz)

Whats new. Here is a quote from one of your duckduck links.
"An article was released a week ago in Belgium, which showed that a smartphone with the 30 most common apps installed on it makes 350.000 connections within 24 hours, when it is NOT being used and but has a wifi/3g conneciton ON, with 76 servers across the world within countries ranging from: the USA, China, Singapore, Ukraine, etc.
Personal information gets shared but also IMEI codes an well virtually anything else that has any value."
For info, these phones don't inherently have malware installed, however if the re-seller installs an unofficial "multi-language" ROM it has the potential to be loaded with all kinds of cr*p.
When you order the phone request that the seller provide it "sealed box". If the phone arrives and it looks like it's already been opened then be cautious and look at installing the official Global ROM from Xiaomi, or installing a reputable custom ROM from xiaomi.eu.

Great phone can't really be beaten in this price range if you don't mind the wait
Just check your rom version when you get it to make sure the vendor hasn't put malware on it

Mi max and note 3 are effectively the same bar screen size (though both are available with 650 or 652 snapdragon - we have one of each both with 3GB Ram, I find very little difference).

Brought this phone a few months back from Ali express, it took a while to arrive but brilliant for the money. On first boot up it did an ota update to miui 8.1. No complaints from me and would certainly buy Xiaomi again.

i love my mi max! best value for money phone I've ever bought
careful with cases for this. I've got the normal version, plenty of cases for that. the Kate version is 2mm longer, the wife has that and I had to get a flexible pu case as the stiff ones wouldn't fit.

2 Jan 17#32
I bought my one the last time it was a deal. I declined the case option, (which was silly), but I was still provided a clear rubber case for it which is all I need and does the job.
The phone is excellent and quick as well, although I am comparing it to my previous phone which was quite old!
Before I did anything I installed a number of different antivirus \ malware \ security products providing full scans with all of them and nothing was highlighted as being unsafe.
The camera could be slightly better, if I wanted to be fussy, but for the money it's a super phone.

Received it before Christmas, compared with Oneplus 2 and Redmi wins with battery life and gaming performance (the only game I'm playing is Real Racing 3), lost with design and camera. Overall, Redmi stays, Oneplus went back to Amazon.
Now I'm on CM13 which is great.

Sorry for the newbie question.
Would this phone be suitable for someone who just wants a typical Samsung/iPhone functionality but without the price premium? Not being tech savy is it a case of switch on and go?
It mentions MIUI 8, based on Android 5.1, is it simple to keep updated and maintain your apps through the Play Store?
Are there any UK networks this wouldn't work on? At the moment we use Tesco, but might switch to something else, possibly Three.
Thank you to anyone that can advise.
malky39 to bobsootie
3 Jan 171#36
Should be perfectly fine for your needs play store will probably be on it out the box, android updates would be over the air as ad when xiaomi decide, unless you mess about with roms. Covets all the bands required for UK networks.

Because it's cheaper and smaller than providing a third port, and so that the dual SIM functionality can be hidden away completely to make a carrier-friendly version if necessary?

just update when I switched on. Hopefully someone will answer as there are so many different versions,
