Mine arrived today, ordered on the 4th, chose standard free shipping and it took just a little over a week. Phone is faultless, very impressed

Good to hear. Mine arrived today. Comes with google play installed and you can select UK as a country on setup but for locale you have to choose something else (no UK listed). Well packaged and no customs issues

Won't let me unexpire - Mod will have to do it - will report....
Seriously looking into this to replace a, frankly excellent, Moto G 2nd Edition. Don't usually like to spend much more than £100 (give or take £10) and can't see anything that compares with this (price or spec-wise), which also includes NFC, which I would like if at all possible. I like as close to stock Android as possible with a custom launcher on top (currently using Apex). I note you can install CM13 on this but what are people's thought's on future upgrades, either from Xiaomi or the developer community, especially as CM has now closed down.
Thanks

Xiaomi are a big brand that has generally supported its devices pretty well, they are also popular with the XDA community so there is always a strong likelihood of the availability of custom roms.
However, at this price point, I've stopped worrying about it. I've had mainstream brand mobiles and imports and the only device that really is ever bang up to date is my Nexus. Given the cost of import phones, if I felt my phone was lagging behind, I'd just buy another.

I'm not an expert but looks like the 2nd one supports band 20 which is what Vodafone and 02 use for 4g whilst the first one does not

There was a 20% discount offer which has now ended for this seller on Aliexpress
Nuts. Just bought this for £131 last week. Not arrived yet.
EDIT just realised this is 5" screen. Didn't know there was an international RN3 with band 20 support

Yes, I didn't have an issue with the Uhans but my Nexus would not run Barclays Mobile Banking software even though it isn't rooted.

Something that's just occurred to me is that, after having a good look around, many of these Chinese vendors state they have rooted the phones to install international ROMs etc. This means that things like All4/4OD (which I use quite a bit) will not work on them and it seems like apps to counter root detection like RootCloak are less likely to work what with recent updates to Android.

Currently I have a Uhans S1 which has a custom rom (Freeme) but adding the Google Now Launcher just makes it run like stock Android anyway. That was merely a matter of installing the launcher from the Play Store so can't invalidate your warranty etc. I've not owned a Xiaomi before but seen lot's of reviews and some of the Miui features look like they might be worth keeping. The freeme on the Uhans wasn't bad but I preferred the stock launcher.

Cheers Colin. What would you recommend as the best stock or near-stock android experience in this price bracket? I've considered the Motorola G4/G4 Plus (but they're a bit big and more expensive) and even the Moto G 3rd edition (but that isn't much of an upgrade over the G2 (which I currently have).

Yeh, I would agree but no Band 20 version yet for the Redmi 4's
Ordered mine and actually got another couple of quid off on checkout and 8.4% Quidco too
So in Grey with Case and Screen Protector (Bundle3) came out as $139.59 so just under £114 delivered.

what's the obsession with this on here? seems to be a very average mid range android with no warranty.
It's not the phone so much that's the concern here it's the risky places folks are now putting up deals from. Have you read some of the AliExpress site reviews?
because they are class phones. a lot of people dont want to pay £6-700 for a mobile phone when you can pick one of these up for a little over £100

They are very good phones for the price, much prefer it over Apple.

viewing the graph takes about 2 seconds from the swipe down notifications pane. not sure why you would need to look at the that often, with the amazing battery of the 3s mind.
You can turn off all MIUI app related battery saver optimization if you wish in the settings, or turn some on some off etc,
I don't have the 3s but MIUI is pretty self explanatory

If you managed to flash TWRP and root the phone. Installing CM is not going to be very difficult

After the pain of rooting it I've decided I'm now too old for messing with custom roms! Would rather get something with stock Android and sell this on. Viewing the battery usage graph Launcher is least of the problems. Doesn't clean up the settings area or all the MIUI "optimisations" that just cause app/notification issues.

Exactly. I hate the thought of paying £400+ on an item I might drop or lose easily.
This phone is cheap as chips and is absolutely rapid. The best thing about it is the battery, too. Can play with it all day (i.e. from 10:00 to 20:00) and it'll be on about 20% by the end of it. Phenomenal phone when you factor in the price.

Had mine almost 2 months now. Great hardware and insane battery life but MIUI is over-complex.
Often takes twice as many clicks to do something, assuming you even find the option you want in the labyrinthine menus. Want to see the graph of battery use:
Stock Android = One swipe, One tap
MIUI OS = Four taps into setting sub-menus
Even after weeks of tweaking, rooting, changing options still get random glitches and delayed notifications.

I just installed nova launcher and it's perfect. Took me all of 20 minutes to set up the phone how I like it, and to be honest the phone and it's interface is so slick that I didn't mind doing it.

get it sent china post and then it gets delivered royal mail this end which means they're not likely to check and you SHOULD be ok. though can then take some time to deliver.

I have a Nokia 1520 with Win 10, which recently has been having antenna performance issues and the battery draining quickly.
While I like Windows as an OS, I've accepted Android is probably where I need to go.
Would this be a good replacement for my phone?
Does it take a nano SIM?

Normally, one sim slot is nano and the other is micro but just get an adapter/cut down your existing one.

The phone is great. came from an LG g5 and apart from the camera I can't see any difference in normal usage. I got rid of the LG due to the battery life as I was out by about 2pm. at the end of the day I haven't had this under 68%. bottom line for me is excellent phone, everything works well on it (except camera) and battery life is amazing but the camera is really dreadful.
no, I've used Ali Express alot too and it's been fine. And I have this phone which I think is great value.

AliExpress is like Amazon or ebay, lots of third party sellers. Just buy from one with a decent score / lots of transactions. I've had no probs at all.
