Battery should last longer and is it such a big deal on a 5" screen? Bet it's better than the HTC One screen from a few years ago and that was more than good enough.

I'm looking for a new phone but not sure about this and the other imported models, most likely similar standard to established brands but still feels a little unknown and not sure whether to go for something like this. Do these need user uploads and/or updates to get the best from them or can they just be switched on and used?
wendy07 to sb1876

works fine straight from (the sealed) box with international rom, pretty much updates itself.
its well made, fast, easy to use and i find the camera is fine for day to day pics. cant really say anything bad about it to be fair.

Go for the Xiaomi redmi note 4, if you get the global ones they can be switched on and used, very simple. I got mine in December and I love it. Especially the battery life.

There's lots of problems with 'ghost touch' on the G4 and Motorola customer 'service' is abysmal. My G4 has been sat in a drawer for months because it's unusable. It often takes months before the fault materialises.

Just a bit confused about the "4G Ready" as am trying to decide between this mobile and the Motorola G4, 4G LTE (downside its a bit big). Phonearena review states "Currently, the Redmi 3S is limited to Chinese 4G network support, A well-rounded package all around, although buyers outside of China ought to steer clear." Is this correct. Based on this alone I would have to lean towards the Motorola.

You should be fine. The problem, generally, with Xiaomi phones, is lack of LTE band 20. This usually means that if you use O2 or Vodafone, or any network that use them, your 4G experience will be less than great, or even worse, none at all. This phone however, has support for band 20, so 4G should be all good.
tumbleweed34
3 Jan 17#23
Not Gorilla glass then? How fragile are these? The P9 Lite was the same spec more or less, but the glass was weak if dropped from a lowish height.
Its going to be better than the moto G4 play but is it better than the G4 /Plus

Time is set by the phone network, it is only messed up if you dont fit a SIM.
Yyou might notice a lack of European countries in the list - even though the Falkland Islands and South Georgia are listed!!
Phone is aimed at India, so setting to India usually gets a few extra goodies.
I should point out that this is a fairly old tech phone now, the basic tech spec is about 4 years old and you can buy a much newer tech phone from Xiaomi via AE for less money, that will be much faster.
Having said that, I have a similar era Xiaomi Note that is still supported and updated by Xiaomi on a regular basis.

Redmi 3S Prime was released only 5 months ago so it is definitely not an old spec (in the price bracket anyway). There is one model with a better processor in Redmi lineup (4 Prime) but due to the higher res screen it can be actually slower in some scenarios e.g. 3D gaming).

Such a shame it's a Qualcomm snapdragon 430 because I could really do with something around 5 inches that can keep going all day but need something with a bit more power behind it. :disappointed:
Heat added though, as still a decent-ish price for a low-end device.

They have emailed me on more than one occasion now saying the ghost touch has been resolved and was even told that on the phone and they said i would need to get new stock phone as the old ones have the issue but the new ones dont....but i am gonna give it another go as had 2 already but gonna buy from John Lewis so i get 2 year warranty to cover myself.....
Gentle_Giant
4 Jan 17#45
Really?? The spec is quite poor compared to my 3 1/2 y/o Note, and I thought Xiaomi were following the same number progression everyone else was.
Are you sure this isnt just a refresh with a new modem that covers band 20 (because I am fairly certain the old 3S didnt have it).
I could go look myself, but just too rushed this week, everything is happening (or needs doing) at once.

Same here, although I'm in Aberdeenshire - a few miles closer to the Highlands but still around 100 miles away! Some sites even have their geographical charges in place when using Royal Mail where postage is set at a standard flat rate for UK delivery!

Not sure what phone you're confusing this with if you're saying it's 4 year old tech and that Xiaomi Redmi Note is similar era. The original Redmi 3S is roughly 6 months old and the original Redmi 3 is roughly 1 year old. The original Redmi Note was released March 14 which would make it under 3 years old. I can't see how the Redmi 3S Prime poor in comparison when it surpasses the Redmi Note in every regard even though Redmi 3S is in a smaller/lower/cheaper line.
When you imply Xiaomi aren't following the same number progression as everyone else, you're probably mixing up the Redmi and Redmi Note lines. Every iteration of the Redmi line until Redmi 4 has been an improvement over the previous model in that line. Similar to the Redmi Note line. Even though the Redmi Note in a higher line, the successors to the original Redmi Note (Redmi Note 4G and Redmi Note Prime) used Snapdragon 400 & 410. Both of which are surpassed by the SD430 in the Redmi 3S.

Bought 16GB version of this phone yesterday (still showing as £119.98) direct from the store in Huddersfield. No 3 pin plug, but has a standard USB charger lead included. As previously mentioned, no UK locale in setup, but used Morocco instead and it set up with correct UK time . I'm assuming time is via SIM provider after that. Was pre-installed with MIUI version 7, but soon prompted me to update with MIUI 8. The download for the update took a while. You are then prompted to install the update. When you do this screen changes to like a buffering circle, which lasted about 10 mins. (I almost panicked thinking my new phone had frozen in some sort of boot loop!) However, patience was rewarded and it rebooted just fine after update. Unlike previous Redmi phones, this comes pre-installed with Google store etc, so expected apps are included. Other than setting the locale to Morocco and doing the MIUI update, setup was as expected with any other UK android phone. It even set the Tesco SIM automatically for data. (Sometimes you have to add APN settings manually for Chinese phones). Seems to work just fine. Battery life seems very good. I've read this is a good phone for VR headsets, as it includes gyroscope & other sensors. My son loves the fingerprint scanner to access feature on the back of the phone. The MIUI interface organises all the apps on the home screen. You can organise these yourself using folders - there is no app drawer. (If you prefer an app draw, I suggest downloading Google Now launcher, free in the Google app store). The sim tray is a push pin affair (pin included in box). You can either use tray as sim/sim or sim/micro sd. No complaints.
