I have an LG G4 and I can honestly say that I haven't seen a phones yet that would persuade me to change. None of the 2016 "flagships" impressed me, it was all art for art's sake with them with eye watering prices attached. When I do decide on a change it will need to be something special and at a realistic price. So far I'm looking towards the the Chinese market again, after a 4 year break. The UMi Z looks pretty good and under £200 as well.

I've had a Xiaomi Mi5 phone since October last year and can honestly say it's the best phone I've ever owned. The specs are top end and the build quality to me is what you would expect from a phone 3 times the price. as someone pointed out though, you would be better to order from Aliexpress which most sellers on there ship it with the official global ROM so you can be sure you get regular updates.

Oh and also before the B20 brigade jump in I'll tell you it doesn't support Band 20 for 4G if that kind of thing bothers you. I'm on Three network and personally I've never used 4G on any of my phone's as I find 3G perfectly fast enough for my day to day use.
Badongkadong to tonksy18
15 Jan 17 #37
The thing about 4G isn't just speed but that it eases congestion and can have more range. with 4g, even a poor signal can give decent transfer speeds.

Totally agree. I was a bit apprehensive about ordering this phone due to being Chinese and possible issues etc...... but I went ahead and brought the Global Edition from Geekbuying for 175 and it really is the nuts. I was so impressed that I ordered one for the missus who also loves the phone.

Quality is excellent, runs extremely fast and I'm on Three network so the 4G works fine and have constant speeds over 50Meg.

Geekbuying can have issues with shipping. See the Mi Max thread on here (can't find the link, sorry!). Some people waited over a month before their phone was even shipped!
Also, we're fast approaching Chinese New Year when the whole of China stops for 2 weeks (even the post office). It's a very good idea not to order anything just before or for a couple of weeks after!

Same with me. Now I have a lovely looking paperweight sitting around. I couldn't find anyone who would repair it and couldn't find the part for a decent price anywhere so I ended up going for the Redmi Note 4. I prefer it to the G4, the only thing I miss from the G4 is the camera.

Brillant phone...just got one at christmas time. Build quality is excellent, was expecting cheap plastic but it has a solid metal surround and tough back. The performance is amazing too, so fast and all tasks done in an instant. Love the fingerprint unlock and battery last 2 days and thats on high use.

Tough back? Look on youtube bud, it's one of the most bendy phones out there. It snaps in two with very little pressure applied.

It may look nice and be from one of the better Chinese phone manufacterers but it's still not very well built and shockijg really given it's their flagship phone.

Dragon32
15 Jan 17 #19
Looks a very good phone if you can do without the 4G band 20 (800mhz) which O2 and Vodafone use and also Three for their SuperVoice/rural data coverage.

So still voting hot, but not for me I'm afraid.
badboyofrock

The only benefit with ordering from Spain, imo, is that the package will get to you sooner. You also definitely won't be charged import duty etc. Bear in mind though, if you order from China, you'd be reaaaaaaalllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyy unlucky to be charged anyway. If it were me, I'd save the cash and order from China.

In my day, ROM meant "Read ONLY Memory". Does it mean something else now? Cos if it is read only, why do I need 32gb of it?
fishmaster to k0sh
15 Jan 17 #32
It's 32GB NAND which you can definitely read and write too.

"Toshiba developed flash memory from EEPROM (electrically erasable programmable read-only memory) in the early 1980s and introduced it to the market in 1984. The two main types of flash memory are named after the NAND and NOR logic gates. The individual flash memory cells exhibit internal characteristics similar to those of the corresponding gates.

Whereas EPROMs had to be completely erased before being rewritten, NAND-type flash memory may be written and read in blocks (or pages) which are generally much smaller than the entire device. NOR-type flash allows a single machine word (byte) to be written—to an erased location—or read independently."

People have got all confused, I think because system updates became called 'ROMs' because they're not normally writable at runtime. This has now gone even further and people call all the non volatile memory 'ROM' instead of NVRAM or flash.

The LG Leon example was a bit tongue in cheek.

The Mi5 breaks because the manufacturers have cut corners to keep it cheap. Other high end phones do not suffer from the same problem but admittedly some of them cost a lot more. Personally I'd still take the risk with the Mi5 but it doesn't hurt for people to be more informed.

Not all ship with OFFICIAL global ROM. It is quite common practice those will come with a FAKE global ROM. It is easy to find if you google it. Official ROM is 4 number long i.e. 8.1.1.0 and fake is 5 and usually has additional .0 at the end. No updates supported on the latter and if updated, seller's warranty is void.

Phone is nice and good, but with some issues. I would not advise anyone not being a geeky person or without a geek in the family or close friends to buy one.
mickrick
15 Jan 17 1 #55
Yeah thats what I've always wondered as well. The firmware would sit on an ROM chip, the OS, apps, media etc would be on solid state storage and would be loaded to and from RAM as required, much like a modern pc. Personally, I think they've ended up as ROM and RAM because its easy for Joe Public to get their heads around.

It had crossed my mind that it comes down, in part, to knowing what you are buying. For example, my Mi5 was advertised as having the official global Rom, and that it would receive updates OTA. It has, it does and all is cool and groovy. The phone on this thread, however, is essentially the same but makes no mention of the Rom version, so if it arrived with a dodgy vendor Rom, I wouldn't be surprised. For that reason, I wouldn't buy.

My experience of Geek buying is they are a terrible company. They take money and orders for stock they don't have. Despite you have a leagal contract for them to perform at the agreed price, they will cancel your order or want to change your order, without your agreement.
Avoid like the plague, if they are like that on ordering, what are they going to be like on after sale s if you have a problem?

Hei does yours work with android pay?
Squarepeg
7 Feb 17 #122
I have both android pay and Barclays pay working.
You have to change the wallet in NFC settings and the mi 5 can be a bit over aggressive at closing background apps but there are guides on tweaking this and once done I have no issues.
